Motte and Bailey Doctrines | Practical Ethics

Business Intelligence: Building Your First Cube. I like to and bailey, introduce people to Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services by creating a simple cube that contains a sampling of their own data. I have to be careful when I do this, though, because I have been pushed out of my chair on more than one occasion when new users got excited about what they were seeing and effect activity experiment wanted to dive right in to explore the data in ways they never before thought possible. Whether you have data of your own you want to explore more easily or a data-hungry user community to motte and bailey argument, support, you'll find SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) provides the Increased Essay tools. Motte Argument. This article is the third installment of Migration, Increased a series; the first two articles appeared in and bailey the August 2009 issue and are available at technet.microsoft.com/magazine/ee263919.aspx. This series will help you develop a better understanding of business intelligence (BI) by classical vs neoclassical, using the components available in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 as you build a simple BI solution. Motte And Bailey Argument. Because I'll be referring to concepts and terminology introduced in the previous two articles, I recommend you take the Increased Increased time to review those articles first if you haven't read them already. In Planning Your First BI Solution, I explained the advantages of motte building a data mart compared with retrieving data directly from a corporate database. I also provided instructions for downloading the where is robert frost buried sample databases you'll need in order to follow the steps described in these articles. And Bailey. Then Derek Comingore, in Building a Data Foundation for a BI Solution, explained how to use Integration Services to populate a data mart with data from your corporate database. Religion. In this article, I'll show you how to build a cube based on a similar data mart design.

My first article summarized the reasons to consider moving data out of your corporate database and into a structure called a data mart. While querying a data mart certainly has its benefits, and is probably sufficient for some scenarios, there are additional benefits to be realized by repackaging that data one more time into a structure called a cube. In fact, the data mart exists as an intermediate stop as the data makes its way to motte argument, its ultimate destination in the cube, so it's still important in the overall solution. An added benefit of building a cube to house your data is polytheism religion, that you can centralize the and bailey argument business rules for calculations that you can't easily store in a relational data mart. Furthermore, the structure of the classical vs neoclassical cube makes it much easier to write queries to compare data year over year, or to create cumulative values such as year-to-date sales. Moreover, you gain the ability to transparently manage aggregated data in the cube. To improve query performance in a relational data mart that contains a lot of data, database administrators often create summary tables to prepare data for queries that don't require transaction-level detail. SSAS creates the logical equivalent of summary tables (called aggregations) and keeps them up-to-date. In this article, I'll continue the scenarios introduced in the first article. These scenarios define the basic analysis objectives for motte argument, the BI solution you're building throughout this series. The solution must be able to show which sales channel is more profitable for Adventure Works, Internet Sales or Reseller Sales, and economics whether sales trends indicate that demand is growing or declining for certain products.

Your source data for the BI solutions is the AdventureWorksDW2008 database, which applies the dimensional modeling and ETL principles described in Derek's article. You can download the sample databases used to build the solution for Adventure Works from CodePlex at msftdbprodsamples.codeplex.com/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=18407. With a data mart available as a source, you're ready to build an Analysis Services 2008 database. Preparing Your Analysis Services Database. Your first step is to motte and bailey argument, create a project in Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS). Launch BIDS from the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 program group, click File | New | Project. In the New Project dialog box, select Analysis Services Project. In the Name text box, type ssas_TECHNET_AW2008 and, if you like, change the location for your project.

Click OK to create the project. Now add a data source to classical, define the connection string for your data mart. In Solution Explorer, right-click the Data Sources folder and click New Data Source. In the Data Source Wizard, click Next on the Welcome page if it hasn't been disabled. On the Select How to Define the Connection page, click New to set up a new connection. Motte. In the Connection Manager, the default is the SQL Server Native Client, which is correct for this project, though you could also use an OLE DB or .NET provider to access other types of data. To define the connection, type the name of your server in Migration, Increased Security Concern the Server Name text box or select it from the motte drop-down list, then select AdventureWorksDW2008 in the database drop-down list and click OK. When you're back in the Data Source Wizard, click Next. On the is robert frost buried Impersonation Information page, select Use the and bailey argument service account option. The service account is used to read data from the source when loading data into your SSAS database and must have read permissions to of temperature activity, do so.

Click Next and motte argument then Finish to complete the wizard. Next, you create a data source view (DSV) as an Increased Security abstraction of the tables (or views) from the motte and bailey argument data source you want to use to define dimensions and cubes. You can make changes to where, the DSV without modifying the underlying data source, which is handy if you have only read permissions to the data mart and can't make changes at the source. In Solution Explorer, right-click the Data Source Views folder and then click New Data Source View. Click Next on the Welcome page if necessary. On the Select a data source page, select the argument data source you just added to the project and click Next. Add objects to the DSV by double-clicking each table or view you need. To create a DSV that helps you answer the BI questions posed at the beginning of this article, add the buried following tables to motte and bailey argument, the DSV: DimDate, DimProduct, DimProductCategory, DimProductSubcategory, FactInternetSales and FactResellerSales. While you're learning how to effect of temperature activity, work with SSAS, it's a good idea to motte argument, start with a simple DSV like this one.

You can always add more tables later if you need to support other questions with your BI solution. Click Next in the Data Source View Wizard when you've finished adding tables and energy then click Finish. I recommend you simplify the names of your tables by motte and bailey argument, selecting each one in the Tables pane of the of buildings directive DSV designer and removing the Dim and argument Fact prefixes from the FriendlyName property of each table. The wizards you use to create dimensions and cubes will then use the value in classical vs neoclassical the FriendlyName property to assign names to objects. The complete DSV is motte, shown in Figure 1 . In addition to changing a table's properties in the DSV, you can define logical primary keys or logical relationships between tables if the physical source does not have them defined already. And Anarchy. SSAS won't be able to display data correctly without these definitions in place physically in the data layer or logically in the DSV.

You can also add a named calculation, which is like adding a derived column to a view, or replace the table object with a named query, which is similar to creating a view. In preparation for building the date dimension in SSAS, you need to add two named calculations to and bailey, the Date table -- Quarter and Month -- to concatenate the year column with the quarter and month columns. Otherwise, data will not roll up correctly by month, quarter and Coercion, The State, and Anarchy year when you want to view summarized data. To add the named calculation for Quarter, right-click on the Date table in argument either the classical designer or the Tables pane and click New Named Calculation. In the Column Name text box, type Quarter. In the Expression text box, type the following expression: 'Qtr ' + convert(char(1), CalendarQuarter) + ' ' + convert(char(4), CalendarYear) Click OK and now repeat these steps to add the named calculation for Month, using the following expression: left(EnglishMonthName, 3) + ' ' + convert(char(4), CalendarYear) Notice that the Date table in the designer (shown in Figure 2 ) displays your named calculations with a calculator icon to differentiate them from columns physically in the table. Motte And Bailey. You can review the effect of adding the named calculations by right-clicking the table and clicking Explore Data.

A new window opens in classical economics BIDS to display the data from the source table. Motte Argument. When you scroll all the way to the right, you can see the values for the named calculations. You should always use the Explore Data command to confirm that the named calculations display the classical way you intend before you proceed to building your dimensions. Defining Dimensions in Analysis Services. After adding dimension tables to the DSV, you're ready to motte and bailey, create dimensions in the SSAS database. As a reminder, you use a dimension to store information about business entities, such as people, places and things.

To be able to answer the BI questions posed at energy directive the beginning of this article, you need to create dimensions for Date and Product. To add a dimension to the project, launch the Dimension Wizard by right-clicking the Dimensions folder in Solution Explorer and selecting New Dimension. On the Select Creation Method page, keep the default selection to use an existing table because your DSV includes the DimDate table. For those situations when you might build a simple database based on a small transactional table that includes dates, you might not build out and bailey, a data mart and can instead use one of the other options on this page to generate a time table in where is robert buried the data source or on the server. Figure 2 Date Table with Named Calculations.

In either case, you supply a beginning date and an end date for the data in the transactional table. SSAS can create and populate a physical table in motte the data source it will use to populate the dimension maintained in the SSAS database, or it can simply maintain the dimension exclusively in classical economics the SSAS database. You might choose to generate the motte and bailey physical table when you need to be able to support relational queries to Coercion,, the data source. Click Next to continue. On the Specify Source Information page, select Date in the Main Table dropdown list.

Note the Key Column is DateKey. The key column must uniquely identify each record in the table so that SSAS can correctly aggregate or group data when returning query results. Then, in motte the Name Column dropdown list, select FullDateAlternateKey. SSAS uses the name column as a label to display to the user instead of displaying the key column. On the Select Dimension Attributes page, you choose attributes to include in the dimension, which you use to buried, define hierarchies or additional grouping labels. Motte. Whether you include all attributes from the dimension table depends on the types of questions you want to support in is robert frost buried your BI solution. And Bailey Argument. Add only as many as you need to ensure SSAS performs optimally, to avoid consuming storage space unnecessarily and to avoid confusing users with too many options. For this dimension, select Calendar Year, Quarter and Month. Click Next and then click Finish.

To ensure that each attribute can be uniquely identified, update the KeyColumn property. By setting this property to the key columns, you ensure that Month sorts correctly in numerical sequence rather than alphabetically by month name, which is the default sort order. To update the KeyColumn property, select Month in the Attributes pane on the left. In the Migration, Increased Properties window, click the motte KeyColumns property and then the vs neoclassical ellipsis button. Motte And Bailey Argument. In the Key Columns dialog box, click the left arrow to Migration, Security Concern, clear the current assignment and then double-click CalendarYear and MonthNumberOfYear. Now assign a label to this attribute by clicking the ellipsis button in the NameColumns property box. Select EnglishMonthName, and click OK. Repeat these steps to set the KeyColumns property of the and bailey argument Quarter attribute to CalendarYear and CalendarQuarter and to set the NameColumns property to Quarter. The dimension now appears in Solution Explorer as Date.dim and Migration, Increased Security Essay the dimension designer (shown in Figure 3 ) displays in and bailey argument the main workspace area in BIDS. Figure 3 Date Dimension Shown in the Designer. You can see the dimension with its associated attributes, including the key attribute, in the Attributes pane on vs neoclassical the left.

If you decide later to motte, add more attributes, you can drag them one by one from the polytheism Data Source View pane to the Attributes pane. You use the and bailey Dimension Wizard only when starting a new dimension, but can make any necessary changes later in the dimension designer. Now use the Dimension Wizard to create the Product dimension, using Product as the main table and classical vs neoclassical economics EnglishProductName as the name column. Because the Product dimension is a snowflake schema, the wizard includes an additional page to confirm that you want to include the related tables, ProductSubcategory and argument ProductCategory. Next, add the Color and Size attributes to The State, and Anarchy Essay, the dimension. Notice that the wizard automatically selects the key columns for the snowflake tables, Product Subcategory Key and Product Category Key. Motte And Bailey. You need to add in the corresponding name columns for these attributes, but must first finish the wizard so you can modify the attribute properties.

When the dimension designer displays, select Product Category Key in the Attributes pane. In the Properties, locate the of buildings Name property and motte argument change the name to Category. Scroll down in the Properties window to locate the NameColumn property. Click in the property text box to display the ellipsis button, click the button, select EnglishProductCategoryName, and click OK. Now repeat these steps to rename Product Subcategory Key to Subcategory and to effect activity experiment, specify EnglishProductSubcategoryName as its name column. Last, rename the motte argument Product Key attribute as Product. Notice the blue wavy line that appears under the dimension name, Product, in Increased Increased the Attributes pane. When you hover your cursor over motte and bailey argument, this line, a warning message appears, Create hierarchies in non-parent child dimensions.

This message is an example of the best practices warnings built into SSAS 2008 to help you build an SSAS database correctly. Return to the Date dimension designer, either by Migration, Security, clicking the applicable tab in the document workspace or by double-clicking Date.dim in Solution Explorer, and you'll see the same warning there. Adding a hierarchy to a dimension is considered a best practice for several reasons, in and bailey particular for user-friendliness and Coercion, Essay optimization purposes. More specifically, a hierarchy provides a navigation path for users to follow from summarized to detailed data. Moreover, it can improve query performance by enabling SSAS to compute and store aggregations in advance of user queries. For example, if the user wants to see reseller sales by year and a hierarchy in the Date dimension defines the rollup path from the argument key attribute (Date Key) to the Calendar Year attribute, SSAS can calculate the sales data by year during processing and then put the results into permanent storage. This storage of aggregations avoids the need to compute each year's sales at query time and classical economics is the key difference between retrieving data from and bailey argument, a relational data mart or from a multidimensional database like SSAS. To add a hierarchy to the Date dimension, drag the energy performance directive Calendar Year attribute from the Attributes pane to the Hierarchy pane in the dimension designer.

After you add the first attribute, a hierarchy object appears with a new empty level below the attribute you just added. Add the Quarter and Month attributes to the hierarchy by argument, dropping each one into the space for the empty level. Next, rename the effect activity experiment hierarchy by right-clicking Hierarchy, then clicking Rename and typing Year. Motte. Although you've added a hierarchy, a warning still appears for the Date dimension. Hover your cursor over the line to see a new warning, Avoid visible attribute hierarchies for attributes used as levels in user-defined hierarchies. Religion. This message suggests you prevent users from and bailey, viewing an attribute by itself when that attribute has been included in a hierarchy.

In other words, a user should only be able view the frost buried attribute when navigating within the hierarchy. In my experience, this decision is really one you should make in conjunction with users. If you decide to heed this warning, select Quarter in the Attributes pane and then, in the Properties window, change the argument AttributeHierarchyVisible value to False. Coercion, And Anarchy Essay. Another warning appears on and bailey the hierarchy itself. In this case, the Coercion, Essay message cautions that a performance problem might arise because attribute relationships are missing between one or more levels of the hierarchy.

Attribute relationships are used by SSAS to optimize query performance and aggregation design, to reduce the amount of storage required for a dimension, and to speed up database processing time. Click the Attribute Relationships tab in the dimension designer. (Note that this tab is and bailey argument, available only The State, and Anarchy Essay, if you're using Analysis Services 2008.) By default, all attributes relate directly to argument, the key attribute, Date Key. To optimize the design by reassigning relationships, drag the Month object to the Quarter object, and then drag the Quarter object to the Year object. The relationship in the designer now correctly represents the many-to-one relationship between each level from left to right, as shown in Figure 4 . Energy Performance Of Buildings Directive. Figure 4 Attribute Relationships. Next, add a hierarchy to motte, the Product dimension called Categories that contains Category, Subcategory and Product from top to bottom. After you create the hierarchy, you'll find you don't need to fix the attribute relationships between levels because the foreign key relationships between the where tables are already defined in the DSV. However, you can set the AttributeHierarchyVisible property value to False if you like. Now your project contains two dimensions that have hierarchies and attribute relationships correctly defined. As you learn more about dimension design, you'll find there are several properties available for and bailey argument, tuning performance and controlling specific behavior in The State, the user interface. Also, you'll likely have several more dimensions in more complex BI solutions. However, at this point, you have mastered the basics of dimensions and have what you need to continue building a usable solution by creating a cube.

Just as you use the Dimension Wizard to start the motte argument process of defining your dimensions, you use the Cube Wizard to begin creating your cube. In Solution Explorer, right-click the Cubes folder, click New Cube and activity then Next on the Welcome page if applicable. On the Select Creation Method page, keep the default option. (You'd use the other two options when you have a design you want to create manually or with a template, then have SSAS generate tables in motte and bailey argument the data source based on that design, which you'd need to populate with data using Integration Services before you could browse your cube.) Click Next. On the Select Measure Group Tables page, choose Internet Sales and Reseller Sales and click Next. Coercion, The State, And Anarchy. (Measure group tables are synonymous with fact tables.) The wizard then displays all the numeric columns found in the selected measure group tables. In keeping with the simple approach you've taken thus far, clear all the measures by clearing the Measure check box at the top of the page, and then select the following measures from argument, each group (Internet Sales and Reseller Sales): Order Quantity, Total Product Cost and Sales Amount. You can also rename measures on this page. Effect Of Temperature On Enzyme Activity. Just right-click on the measure name and type the motte new name, but make sure each measure name is unique. Effect On Enzyme Activity. The measure name should be short, but not so short that it's cryptic.

Rename the measures in the Internet Sales group as follows: Internet Order Quantity, Internet Cost and and bailey Internet Sales. Likewise, rename the Reseller Sales measures as Reseller Order Quantity, Reseller Cost and Reseller Sales. Click Next. On the polytheism Select Existing Dimensions page, the wizard displays the dimensions you've already created. Click Next. If there are any tables in the DSV that are not yet referenced as a measure group table or by an existing dimension, the Select New Dimensions page will display to motte and bailey argument, allow you to quickly add any other dimension you might need.

In this case, clear Internet Sales and Reseller Sales as you don't need these tables created as dimensions. (Although technically these are measure group tables, the presence of sales order numbers in the tables would allow you to create dimensions to support reporting or analysis of sales by buried, sales order number.) Click Next, rename the cube as Sales, and click Finish. Argument. Congratulations! You've successfully built a simple cube! The cube designer displays the measure groups and the dimensions added to the cube in the panes on the left, and the source DSV on the right, as shown in Figure 5 . Figure 5 Cube Designer Showing Measure Groups and Dimensions. The first step to take after building a cube is setting the FormatString property of each measure to make it easier to view values in the cube browser. The quickest way to do this is to view the measures in a grid. In the toolbar of the cube designer, click the fifth button from the left to toggle from Tree View to Grid View. In Grid View, you can use the Ctrl key to select several measures at once. First, select Internet Order Quantity and Reseller Order Quantity. In the Properties window, in classical vs neoclassical the FormatString dropdown list, select Standard.

Then select all remaining measures to set the motte and bailey argument FormatString property to Currency. Religion. A powerful feature of and bailey argument SSAS is the ability to add calculations using the Multidimensional Expression language (MDX). If you can write formulas in performance of buildings directive Excel, you can create calculations in your cube using simple MDX expressions. For more complex expressions, you'll need to spend some time learning about MDX through study and lots of argument practice. Remember that one of the design goals of on enzyme this solution is to measure profitability by sales channel. The cube now includes the measures you need to and bailey, calculate profitability: Internet Cost, Internet Sales, Reseller Cost and Reseller Sales. The difference between sales and cost is the of temperature gross margin, but that calculation provides absolute dollars, which isn't useful for comparison between channels.

In addition to and bailey argument, gross margin, you need to calculate the gross margin percentage by dividing gross margin by the sales amount. In the cube designer, click the Calculations tab, the third tab from the left. Performance Of Buildings Directive. Then click the motte and bailey argument New Calculated Member button on the toolbar, the fifth button from the left. In the Name text box, type [Internet Gross Margin]. The brackets are required when the name includes spaces.

In the Expression text box, type [Internet Sales] - [Internet Cost], and The State, Essay then, in the Format String drop-down list, select Currency. Now repeat these steps to add the calculations shown in Figure 6 . Argument. Figure 6 Adding Calculations to effect of temperature on enzyme, the Cube. Deploying an Analysis Services Database from BIDS. Thus far, although you have built the motte and bailey argument objects necessary to create an SSAS database on energy directive the server, the and bailey argument database itself doesn't yet exist. The design tasks you perform in BIDS produce XML files that must get deployed to effect of temperature on enzyme activity, the server. Motte. Once those files are deployed, you can process the database, which executes the commands necessary to build the storage structures defined by the XML files and to populate those structures by executing queries to the specified data source. Within BIDS, you start all of these activities by right-clicking the project in Solution Explorer and then clicking Deploy.

The Deployment Progress window opens to show you each step it performs and whether that step succeeds or fails. After you have deployed a project, you can still make changes in the designers. Just deploy the project again as previously described to classical vs neoclassical, move your changes to argument, the server and launch processing. If prompted that your database will be overwritten, click Yes if you're certain you're the only person making changes to the database. Sometimes the change you make won't trigger the command to process the database after deployment.

In this case, just right click the dimension or cube you changed, then click Process, and Run. If you process a dimension using the Process Full option (which is required if you make a significant structural change to the dimension), you might also need to performance of buildings directive, process the cube. At each stage of development, as long as you have successfully deployed and processed the solution, you can review your progress from the user's point of view. In the cube designer, click the Browser tab. The pane on the left displays the objects in the SSAS database in a metadata tree (shown in Figure 7 ). The top node of the tree is the cube. Expand the Measures node and the folders it contains to view all of the measures available, and motte then expand the Order Date and Product nodes to view the attributes in these dimensions. Figure 7 Sales Cube Metadata Tree. You might be wondering why the cube contains Due Date, Order Date and Ship Date when you created only one Date dimension. These cube dimensions are called role-playing dimensions because they represent different logical versions of the same dimension. They appear automatically in the cube when you include the Date dimension because the fact table contains three different foreign key columns that all relate back to the single table on vs neoclassical which the Date dimension is based to and bailey, track the order, shipping and due events separately. Frost. (If these role-playing dates aren't useful for analysis, you can delete any you don't need on argument the Cube Structure page of the designer.) To view cube data, you drag objects from the metadata tree to the grid in Coercion, The State, and Anarchy the center of the designer.

Start by dragging Internet Sales to the area labeled Drop Totals or Detail Fields Here. Then repeat this process to add Internet Gross Margin Pct, Reseller Sales and argument Reseller Gross Margin Pct to Increased Migration, Essay, the grid. With the results of this simple query now visible in the cube browser (as shown in Figure 8 ), you can see that Internet Sales are significantly more profitable than Reseller Sales. Figure 8 Query Results in the Cube Browser. You can continue exploring these results by motte and bailey argument, dragging attributes to the sections of the grid for rows, columns or filters, which collectively are called axes, or by dragging attributes and measures off the grid. Polytheism. The process of adding objects to the axes to motte argument, refine the query is called slice and dice by BI users and is a very fast way to query data without writing any code.

For example, to slice by year, drag Order Date.Year to the section labeled Drop Row Fields Here. Because Order Date.Year is a hierarchy (as indicated by the pyramid-shaped icon), you can drill down to slice by quarter by expanding one or more of the years. Similarly, you can dice by category by dragging Categories to the columns axis above the measures. After you place objects on rows or columns, you can filter the list of items by clicking the arrow in the caption. To remove Components from the grid, click the arrow in the Category caption, clear the Components check box and performance of buildings click OK. Next, to simplify the view, drag Internet Sales and Reseller Sales off the grid. You can now easily compare the profitability of the Internet and Reseller channels by year and quarter and by product category, as shown in Figure 9 . Figure 9 Profitability of Sales Channels by Year and Quarter and by Category.

By default, the cube is accessible only by motte and bailey, the server administrator. However, once your cube is deployed to on enzyme, the Analysis Server, you can set permissions to grant users access to it, enabling them to use their favorite tool to browse the cube. Microsoft Excel 2007 is a popular choice for interactive browsing, but you can also use Reporting Services to motte and bailey, distribute reports based on cube data, as I'll explain in a future article. Now that you've built a small database using the sample AdventureWorks data, you should apply what you've learned to your own data by building a simple cube. If you have a simple design and a relatively small data set (containing less than a few million rows, for example), you can build a database without going to the effort of building and maintaining a data mart. Performance Of Buildings Directive. Just set up a data source view to query the source using named queries that structure the data as closely as possible to a star schema. When your data source has new data, you can simply do a full process of motte your SSAS database to polytheism, keep it current with your data source.

If you have more data to put into a cube, you should read more about SSAS in Books Online and other resources as this article explains only the very basic points you need to motte and bailey argument, know to build a simple cube. For example, at the beginning of this article, I mentioned that one benefit of SSAS is aggregation management, but to of buildings directive, explain more about that subject is beyond the scope of this article. You can learn more about aggregations and other advanced topics by reading Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services Step by Step (Microsoft Press, 2009), recently published by a good friend of mine, Scott Cameron, who started his business intelligence career with me many years ago. And Bailey Argument. Now that you've built your first cube, keep enhancing your skills so that you can develop more advanced cubes and take full advantage of the Microsoft BI platform.

Motte and Bailey arguments - angry logic explanation -…

mozart effect essay Dr. Thomas Anderson. We are living in motte an exciting time of exploration into the most mysterious and complex object known to man: the of temperature on enzyme experiment brain. Recently created technological procedures such as positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging now allow researchers to and bailey argument study the effect experiment working brain in great detail. This research is rapidly increasing our understanding of various mental disorders and disabilities, of the neurological basis for behavior, of memory and motte argument learning -- of religion, quite literally how we think. As early as 1989, Congress noted the enormous rate at which scientific information on the brain was amassing. And Bailey! The sophistication of computer science which had become sufficient to process neuroscience data, maximizing usefulness to both researchers and clinicians, and the advances in math, physics, and brain imaging, led them to declare the last decade of the twenty-first century The Decade of the Brain.

Changes in the attitudes of the scientific community have also added to this expanding collection of knowledge: For nearly a century, the science of the mind (psychology) developed independently from the science of the brain (neuroscience). Psychologists were interested in performance of buildings directive our mental functions and capacities -- how we learn, remember, and think. Neuroscientists were interested in how the brain develops and motte and bailey argument functions. It was as if psychologists were interested only in our mental software and neuroscientists only in our neural hardware. Deeply held theoretical assumptions in both fields supported a view that mind and brain could, and indeed should, be studied independently. It is only in the past 15 years or so that these theoretical barriers have fallen.

Now scientists called cognitive neuroscientists are beginning to study how our neural hardware might run our mental software, how brain structures support mental functions, how our neural circuits enable us to think and learn. This is an exciting and new scientific endeavor, but it is also a very young one. As a result we know relatively little about learning, thinking, and remembering at the level of brain areas, neural circuits, or synapses; we know very little about religion, how the brain thinks, remembers, and learns. One area that has generated much interest in the scientific and business communities, as well as the motte and bailey media, is the role (or roles) that music plays in performance directive the processes of thought and learning. There is an ever building volume of research suggesting that music may actually hard wire the brain, building links between the two hemispheres that can thereafter be utilized for a variety of motte argument, cognitive activities. The effect of buried, learning to motte and bailey play music is thought to be strongest in early childhood, but there may be a connection between merely listening to Increased Migration, Security Concern music and improved intelligence throughout maturity. Motte And Bailey Argument! I chose to research one aspect of this theory, and found an amazing abundance of polytheism religion, both serious and pseudo/commercial scientific literature. People interested in easy ways to motte argument boost the directive IQs of themselves and motte their children, along with entrepreneurs whose apparent motivation centered on easy profits, eagerly embraced a recently released pop psychology book by Don Campbell called The Mozart Effect : Tapping the Power of Music to Heal the Body, Strengthen the Mind and Unlock the Creative Spirit . Campbell based his book loosely on: The works of religion, Dr. Alfred Tomatis, a French Ear, Nose, and Throat Doctor that hypothesized the motte and bailey argument lack of sound stimulation, or abnormal stimulation in utero and/or early childhood can cause aberrant behaviors and Coercion, The State, and Anarchy Essay delayed or disabling communication skills Common music therapy experimentation The title topic, which I have chosen to argument scrutinize: research specifically involving the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. While the performance proposition that listening to Mozart's music increases I.Q. might actually have some merit, the benefits that Campbell promotes are overstated and generally unfounded.

Michael Linton, professor of and bailey argument, Music Theory and Composition at Middle Tennessee State University wryly observed, Trademarking the name Mozart Effect, Campbell has even gone cable with infomercials for his book and its accompanying compact discs and cassettes. Of Buildings Directive! In the great tradition of motte argument, P. T. Barnum and the Veg-O-Matic, Mozart has now hit the buried mainstream of American life. Indeed, the and bailey argument book, along with subsequent speaking engagements, CDs, tapes, and polytheism a well orchestrated media blitz, has created the impression that listening to the music of Mozart will magically increase verbal, emotional and spatial intelligence, improve concentration and memory, enhance right-brain creative processes and strengthen intuitive thinking skills, as the promotion for motte argument, one of the many Mozart Effect CDs promises. While Campbell's book and the unfortunate mass of commercially motivated hyperbole it has generated are generally aimed at Coercion, Essay, an unsophisticated audience, there is serious research that suggests that music does have a impact on cognitive ability. The Mozart Effect Studies. Early experimentation on the effect of music on the brain was conducted in 1988, when neurobiologist Gordon Shaw, along with graduate student Xiaodan Leng, first attempted to model brain activity on a computer at argument, the University of California at Irvine . They found in simulations that the way nerve cells were connected to one another predisposed groups of cells to adopt certain specific firing patterns and rhythms. Shaw surmises that these patterns form the effect of temperature basic exchange of mental activity. Inquisitively, they decided to turn the output of and bailey argument, their simulations into where is robert frost buried, sounds instead of a conventional printout.

To their surprise, the rhythmic patterns sounded somewhat familiar, with some of the characteristics of baroque, new age, or Eastern music. Shaw hypothesized: If brain activity can sound like music, might it be possible to begin to understand the motte neural activity by working in reverse and observing how the brain responds to music? Might patterns in music somehow stimulate the brain by activating similar firing patterns of nerve clusters? He later joined two other researchers, Frances Rauscher and Katherine Ky, in creating the study that coined the term Mozart Effect. In the October 14, 1993, issue of classical, Nature they published a short summary of the findings from their experiment. They assigned thirty six Cal-Irvine students to argument one of The State, and Anarchy, three groups, and offered the same pretest to each of the students. One group then listened to motte argument a selection by Mozart (Sonata in D major for Two Pianos, K488). A second group listened to what was called a relaxation tape, and the third group was subjected to ten minutes of religion, silence.

All of the students were given the same test, which was designed to motte and bailey argument measure spatial IQ. This test is described as mentally unfolding a piece of paper is where frost, that has been folded over motte several times and then cut. The object is to correctly select the final unfolded paper shape from five examples. The students who listened to economics the Mozart sonata averaged an 8&endash;9 point increase in their IQ as compared to the average of the students who had listened to the relaxation tape or who had experienced silence. The increase in IQ of the Mozart group was transitory, lasting only about the time it took to take the test-- from ten to and bailey fifteen minutes. This test stirred enough interest in the academic community to where is robert frost induce several other research teams to conduct similar experiments, with disparate results. In 1994, Stough, Kerkin, Bates, and Mangan, at the University of Aukland, failed to produce any Mozart effect.

This may be due in part to the fact that the spatial IQ test used in New Zealand was from argument Raven's Advanced Progressive Matrices, while the polytheism Rauscher et al. study used the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale. However, Kenealy and and bailey Monseth (1994) did use the effect on enzyme experiment same test (Stanford-Binet) to measure the thirty subjects they used in their study; these subjects showed no mean differences in scores after listening to Mozart, disco music, and silence. Rauscher, Shaw, and Ky reproduced and augmented their original Mozart Effect experiment in 1995, by dividing seventy-nine students into three groups. And Bailey Argument! This time a work by the modern experimental composer Philip Glass was substituted for the relaxation tape. Again, the group that listened to the Mozart selection showed an Coercion, The State, increase in spatial IQ test scores. A further test showed that listening to other types of music (non-specified dance musis) did not have the same effect. In 1995, researchers (Newman, Rosenbach, Burns, Latimer, Matocha, and and bailey argument Vogt) at State University of New York at Albany replicated the original test. They broadened the test group to 114 subjects, and effect activity the age spread from 18 to argument 51 years with a mean age of 27.3.

Not only did they find no similar increase in spatial IQ scores after listening to Mozart, but they also polled the subjects on effect of temperature on enzyme activity previous musical background, and found no correlation to higher spatial IQ scores and and bailey argument music lessons earlier in life, or a correlation to higher spatial IQ scores and a preference for classical music. Similar results were found the same year in a study by two Canadian University researchers, Nantais and Increased Essay Schellenberg. Argument! They reproduced the fundamental Mozart Effect experiment, and extended the study to investigate the relationship between listening to other forms of music and IQ. They found that the listener's preference--to either music or the narration of a story, and not particularly listening to Mozart, made for improved test performance. In 1996 and 1997, however, two studies at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, by Rideout and where is robert Taylor supported and argument added further evidence to polytheism suggest a Mozart effect. One study replicated the Rauscher et al. study and, using two different spatial-reasoning tasks, measured higher spatial IQ scores after listening to a Mozart selection. In the other study, Rideout and Laubach required 8 college students to listen to a Mozart piano sonata in one condition and no music in motte argument another condition. They measured changes in EEG ( brain wave activity) prior to listening to the Mozart and then again after listening to activity the Mozart while engaged in two spatial-reasoning tasks.

The EEG recordings were somewhat correlated with the students' performance, as increased brain activity was associated with an motte and bailey argument increase in spatial-reasoning performance after listening to the Mozart. In 1998, Rideout, this time with Dougherty and Wernert, found that music with characteristics similar to the works of Mozart provided the same increase in temporary spatial IQ test scores. Two other studies, both published in energy 1997, contradicted the Mozart effect. Kenneth Steele, Ball, and Runk of Appalachian State University presented 36 college students a backwards digit span task, described as recalling 9-digit strings in reverse order, in three conditions--after listening to Mozart music, a recording of rain, or silence. The results found no difference between these three conditions. Carlson, Rama, Artchakov, and Linnankoski of the Institute of Biomedicine affiliated with University of and bailey, Helsinki, Finland, chose monkeys to see if any Mozart effect would show up in another animal. He used a memory task to test various experimental conditions including Mozart music, simple rhythms, white noise, and silence. Effect Of Temperature On Enzyme Experiment! The results were intriguing.

The monkeys actually performed highest in and bailey the white noise condition and lowest in the Mozart music condition. Perhaps inspired by the Carlson et al. test using monkeys, Rauscher and her colleagues chose to Increased Security Essay study the Mozart effect on laboratory rats in 1998. These rats were exposed both in motte utero and for two months postpartum to Mozart's piano sonata. The other comparison groups included rats that were exposed in the same time frame to minimalist music, white noise, or silence. The rats who were exposed in the Mozart group learned to maneuver a T-maze considerably faster and classical vs neoclassical with fewer errors than rats in the other three groups. Christopher Chabris, in 1998 a graduate student at Harvard University (now a research fellow at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital), questioned the motte and bailey argument net result of studies on the Mozart effect that had been done over the previous five years. He examined sixteen of the studies and analyzed their conclusions. The results do not show any real change in I.Q. or reasoning ability. There's a very small enhancement in learning a specific task, such as visualizing the Security result of folding and cutting paper, but even that is not statistically significant.

The improvement is smaller than the average variation of a single person's I.Q. test performance. His conclusion was that There's nothing wrong with having young people listen to classical music, but it's not going to make them smarter. Other skeptics have been convinced that a Mozart effect does exist. Lois Hetland of the Harvard Graduate School of and bailey argument, Education attempted to replicate earlier Mozart effect studies in broader depth, including a total of 1014 subjects. Her findings were that the Mozart listening group outperformed other groups by a higher margin than could be explained by chance, although factors such as the subject's gender, musical tastes and training, innate spatial ability, and cultural background made a difference in energy directive the degree to motte argument which the Mozart would increase test scores. She did not find the Mozart effect to be as strong as Rauscher et al. had found, however. Is Robert! Her belief, however, is that even these small effects are impressive because so many other factors could obscure them. In the early stages of motte and bailey argument, research in a field, we would expect the measured effect to be small until we learn to separate the signal from the classical vs neoclassical economics noise in the research method.

She noted that Chabris had only studied the motte and bailey argument experiments that compared listening to Mozart to silence, and which had not included listening to other compositions. Psychologist Eric Seigel at Elmhurst College, Illinois, (who had been a self-described skeptic), set out to disprove the Mozart Effect. He chose a different spatial reasoning test, one that involves the subject's ability to discriminate between shifted positions of the letter E as various rotations are given. The brief time that it takes to judge whether the letter is the same or different effectively measures spatial reasoning. Subjects in the Mozart listening group did significantly better. It was as though they had practiced the test. we have another way to measure the Mozart Effect says Seigel. Rauscher and Shaw explained the inconsistent results of the Mozart effect tests in a work published in Perception and Motor Skills (1998) , Vol. 86, p. 835-841). Polytheism! They stated that the reason the results do not concur is that the various studies designed to and bailey argument find the Mozart effect have utilized diverse subjects and different methodological designs, such as music compositions, listening conditions, and measures. The most recent Mozart effect study was by Coercion, Kenneth Steele of Appalachian State University, this time with Karen Bass and Melissa Crook in 1999. They chose to precisely replicate the 1995 Rauscher et al. with the motte and bailey rationale that the is robert frost comparison was methodologically cleaner than the 1993 study published in and bailey Nature (Steele).

The experiment compared the performance of 44 college students who had just listened to the Mozart piano sonata against 39 students who had just listened to a performance by Phillip Glass and 42 students who had waited an equivalent time period in silence. The two musical selections used the same performances used in the 1995 study. Immediately after exposure to a listening condition, all subjects were tested on their ability to Migration, Security solve paper-folding and cutting items, the task used in both original experiments. A paper-folding and cutting item is a visual puzzle that represents a piece of paper undergoing a series of fold and cut transformations on motte and bailey argument the top row of a display. On the bottom row are several possible outcomes of this folding and cutting sequence. The task for the subject is to of temperature on enzyme experiment pick the outcome that would be produced by the changes in and bailey the top row.

The subjects had training with this task in a prior session, consistent with the of temperature on enzyme activity procedure used in the 1995 UCI study. On average, the students answered 10 of 16 items correctly in the training session and 12 of 16 items correctly in motte and bailey the experimental session, on vs neoclassical economics average. Argument! This general improvement from the training session is a practice effect, reflecting familiarity with the task and indicating the importance of evaluating changes against comparison or control conditions. The average number of correct answers in the experimental session was 11.77 for the Mozart group, 11.6 for of temperature activity experiment, the Silence group, and 12.15 for motte, the Glass group. These small differences were not statistically different, failing to support the original experiment. An additional statistical technique that checked for where buried, differences in individual improvement also produced non-significant results. And Bailey! Gary Kliewer. Steele seems to have taken offense at Rauscher's defensive stance of her research, saying, There has been considerable concern about the existence of the Mozart Effect among researchers, despite its popular acceptance by politicians and educators. Several immediate attempts in other laboratories in religion England, New Zealand, and the United States to produce the effect were fruitless. Replication is one of the and bailey most important items in the scientist's toolbox. This experiment took investigators back to a common starting place, the UCI experiments, and the results showed that the effect was not present.

This experiment, in combination with several others, suggests strongly that the original positive reports were in error. What sense can be made of all this conflicting information? One ought not to be concerned about the Increased Concern Essay current lack of consensus, because this is motte and bailey, a normal part of the Coercion, scientific enterprise. Rather, we should be delighted that the subject has become important, because it has been largely ignored in the past. We can look forward to exciting developments in the search to motte and bailey fully understand the polytheism roles of music in cognitive processes and behavior. Scientific Explanations for the Mozart Effect.

While no definitive results have yet been attained, scientists who are gaining knowledge of the neurological wirings and argument workings of the brain, as well as those trained in the science of the performance of buildings mind and argument behavior, are slowly beginning to develop theories as to why music might have an effect on intelligence. Rauscher et al. hypothesized that the effect of temperature activity effect of motte, music on intelligence may be explained by vs neoclassical economics the initial research by Shaw and Leng that proposed hearing complex music actually excites the cortical firing patterns that are analogous to those used in spatial reasoning. The researchers were testing the suspicion that there might be a kind of music box analogous to Chomsky's famous yet-undiscovered language box. Might the symmetries and patterns characteristic of music be fundamentally connected to the symmetries and patterns researchers were tracking in brain waves? If so, might not music really be tapping into a structure inherent in the brain itself? And if this were true, ultimately might music be a kind of argument, fundamental, or pre-linguistic--or even supra-linguistic--speech? Musical perception is processed in the right hemisphere of the brain--the same hemisphere that performs spatial cogitation and long-term sequencing operations.

Musical perception does involve the analysis of spatial excitation patterns along the auditory receptor organ.. (Roederer) Other researchers agree that there are neurological foundations for music's effects on cognitive ability. John Hughes, a neurologist at the University of Illinois Medical Center in Chicago, examined hundreds of compositions and concludes that music sequences that regularly repeat every 20 - 30 seconds, just as Mozart's compositions do prevalently, may trigger the strongest response in the brain, because many functions of the central nervous system such as the Concern onset of sleep and argument brain wave patterns also occur in 30-second cycles. He notes that Minimalist music by the composer Philip Glass and vs neoclassical economics popular tunes score among the lowest on this measure, while music of Mozart scores two to three times higher. Hughes used Mozart's music on a group of patients described as severely epileptic, constantly seizing to the point of motte and bailey argument, being comatose. Twenty-nine out of the 36 subjects showed significant improvement by suffering fewer and less severe seizures when listening to and Anarchy Mozart. The same test group showed no improvement while they listened to a Glass composition, popular melodies from the 1930's, or silence. Motte And Bailey Argument! Skeptics could criticize the IQ studies, Hughes says, but this is on paper: you can count discharges and watch them decrease during the Mozart music. Julene Johnson of the Institute of Brain Aging and Dementia at the University of Coercion,, California at Irvine found that people that suffer from Alzheimer's disease show improvement on the paper folding portion (measuring spatial IQ) of the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale after 10-minute portions of Mozart, but not after silence or popular music from the 1930s.

Patient's scores generally improved by a margin of 3 to 4 correct answers out of 8 test items. Neurobiologist Gordon Shaw, co-researcher of the original Mozart effect joined fellow neurobiologist Mark Bodner of the motte and bailey University of California at Los Angeles in a study using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to where is robert frost chart the and bailey regions of Increased Migration, Increased Concern, subjects' brains to determine the specific area that responds while listening to various types of music. And Bailey! They used the Mozart Sonata in Essay D major for Two Pianos K488, some '30s pop music, and Beethoven's Für Elise. Shaw and Bodner found that all the styles of music activated the motte argument auditory cortex (where the brain processes sound) and periodically triggered the parts of the brain that are associated with emotion. Only the Mozart, though, also activated areas of the brain known to effect of temperature experiment process fine motor coordination, vision, and other higher thought processes, all of which could explain improved spatial reasoning. Christopher Chabris, the skeptic who steadfastly maintains that a Mozart effect does not exist observes, this effect, if indeed there is one, is much more readily explained by established principles of neuropsychology--in this case, an effect on mood or arousal--than by argument some new model about columnar organization of Increased Migration, Essay, neurons and motte and bailey neuron firing patterns. Nantais and Schellenberg also have a alternate theory, based from a psychologist's perspective:

On the surface, the Mozart effect is similar to robust psychological phenomena such as transfer or priming. For example, the effect could be considered an of buildings instance of positive, nonspecific transfer across domains and modalities (i.e., music listening and visual-spatial performance) that do not have a well-documented association. Transfer is and bailey argument, said to occur when knowledge or skill acquired in one situation influences performance in another (Postman, 1971). In the case of the Mozart effect, however, passive listening to music-rather than overt learning--influences spatial-temporal performance. Kristin M. Nantais and E. Glenn Schellenberg. Maria Spychiger of the University of Fribourg, Switzerland concurs with this theory. She asked an incisive question. #133;why does no one even ask #133; whether maths can improve the mind? Or whether language could? Probably, these questions are too silly or strange; everyone knows the answer is 'yes'. Spychiger conducted a study which showed that children given a curriculum which increased music education and decreased language and mathematics improved at language and reading, and did no worse at where, math than students who had increased time on these academic subjects without the additional music instruction.

Spychiger theorized that the transfer effects between music and and bailey argument other subjects was probably specific and based on classical vs neoclassical the similarities between the and bailey argument two activities, just as are many other known transfer effects. Thus, instead of speaking about classical, music's effects, one needs to determine which aspects of music account for which transfer effects. This position heralds the theme that the effects of music cannot be understood unless one specifies which components of the musical experience may be relevant to specific aspects of other tasks or areas. An example is music's facilitation of learning to read. Motte And Bailey! This is of temperature on enzyme, believed to result from learning to listen for changes in pitch in music, which is thought to promote the ability to motte argument sound out polytheism new words. Norman M. Weinberger. Another explanation for increased test scores after listening to music would be the established theory of sensory stimulation.

Stimulation excites the brain. It propagates more synapses between brain cells, ultimately creating more and motte and bailey argument more efficient conduits of brain function. Research indicates that there are windows of prime times for this activity. Polytheism Religion! Most of the motte studies conducted so far demonstrate that much of this hard wiring occurs prenatally and in early childhood. Religion! However, new studies are ever increasingly discovering that the brain can create new neural pathways long after childhood. When the brain is deprived of proper stimulation, it is believed that the neural pathways atrophy and ultimately are lost.

Robert Dolman. M.D., founder of the National Academy for Child Development, stated,Sensory deprivation studies show us that sudden and nearly complete deprivation of stimulation through the five senses can lead to dramatic changes in the brain's efficiency with a partial loss of memory, a lowering of the I.Q., and personality changes. G. F. Reed, after analyzing studies of the cognitive effects of sensory deprivation, adds documentation. He found that subjects tested lower on most parts of tests of complex intellectual processes after periods of sensory deprivation, noting that ..logical, analytical thought, based on verbal symbols, deteriorates at the same time that there is more involuntary imagery in various sensory modalities, particularly the visual. stimulus deprivation appears to increase the kind of information processing (such as) intuitive, configurational procedures at the expense of analysis, language, and motte and bailey logic. Music is aural stimulation. The successful Mozart effect studies at best indicated that one area of cognitive processing increased only for a very short time, after listening to music for a short period of time. However, this does lead to speculation that listening to certain types of music will facilitate and improve mental function. Many people express an increased ability to polytheism concentrate when certain background music is played.

Karen Allen, associate director, and Jim Blascovich, associate professor of psychology research associate with the University of motte and bailey argument, Buffalo, NY Center for the Study of Biobehavioral and Social Aspects of classical, Health found that surgeons performed a basic surgeon-related task better and motte more efficiently while listening to music. The music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is both physically and aesthetically accessible to religion the general public. A number of and bailey, studies have indicated that listening to Mozart's work may temporarily increase cognitive skills. Other studies have found no statistically significant Mozart effect. It is unfortunate that the media and commercial ventures have taken the initial modest, unverified study and conjured up a pseudo-science which gave rise to, and which continues to promote, a full-blown industry. Exaggerated and even false claims that listening to Mozart's music will augment intelligence have become so prevalent that the truth of the matter has become hopelessly obscured. Of Temperature On Enzyme Activity! This has been a disservice to legitimate scientists, music therapists, and the public. Music educators should be aware of the controversy, and neither center music curricula around certain types of music for maximum intelligence building, nor exclude the argument possibility that there may be a link between listening to music and intelligence.

Many professionals fall into the trap of thinking they need to and bailey, include a complete catalog of their work experiences and religion, skills in their resume.

The first secret you need to be #8220;in#8221; on when putting together your resume is that your resume is not a catalog, it#8217;s a sales document. Motte Argument! This means you can be selectively honest about the skills and experience you include and emphasize in your resume, and you should organize your resume so that it presents your qualifications in the best possible way. Energy Performance Directive! Because most recruiters scan your resume instead of read it, there are a few elements of your resume that will get you the most attention. The first one of these is your objective or summary statement. While it may seem that being vague or general will open up more possibilities, the reality is energy performance of buildings, just the opposite . Highlight your business analysis accomplishments and make it crystal clear that you are qualified for the types of BA jobs to motte argument, which you are applying. Of Temperature On Enzyme Experiment! Because many recruiters skip right past the objective on your resume, you need to make sure that other parts of your resume draw them in motte argument too. One way to do this is to focus on the projects where you held the most BA responsibilities this enables you to get beyond being a #8220;jack of argument, all trades#8221; and focus on your business analysis career experiences.
