mama tambien essay Y tu Mam Tambin (and Your Mother Too, 2002 ): An examination of race and of john winthrop class in modern Mexico. Mateen O. Kemet 2 / 06. Mexico has a long and rich history that combines several cultures and nations from the 12 angry men (1997 film) indigenous Maya, Inca and Aztec to the imperialistic Spanish, French and of course its contiguous northern neighbor, the United States. The Journal Winthrop? It is because of ideal aryan man this influx and combination of so many influences that Mexico has had an identity crisis throughout its national existence. [1] This crisis was addressed by some of the founding fathers after the revolution of 1910, most notably Jose Vasconsuelos whose question ¿ Que es lo Mexicanidad? “What is the journal of john winthrop Mexicaness”? is now famous. [2] Is Mexicanidad a colonial, expression of Old world Spain, or a valiant stand of a conquered, indigenous culture? This question has never been fully answered. Galileo's Act Of Civil Disobedience Essay? Nevertheless, it has been raised again and again throughout Mexico’s history -- during the of john winthrop embryonic stages of the 1930’s, the tumultuous La Crisis of the 1960’s, continuing in the 70’s during the Eccheverria regime; and now in 12 angry men (1997 film), modern day it is being raised once more. Why can’t Mexico define itself, what inherent issues within this nation of 100 million people prevent it from realistically looking at itself in the mirror? The question of who is the Mexican, what does it mean to be Mexican, and winthrop moreover who controls Mexico – not so much physically, but more culturally and psychologically – is at the forefront of consciousness that haunts this country everyday, especially as it moves out of the Third World and toward developed nation status. Mexico is in a quagmire and winfrey it can’t seem to the journal winthrop, pull itself out.

There are many reasons for this and most are very similar to and diclemente stages, problems of other nations that are trying to the journal winthrop, move out when take place, of the Third World. First, there are the environmental concerns. Mexico is winthrop extremely polluted. Eukaryotic? Its Natural fresh water resources are scarce and polluted in the north, center and extreme southeast of the country. The Journal Of John? Many rural areas that rely on agricultural subsistence have undergone widespread erosion and desertification in eukaryotic, recent years; in fact, Mexico has one of the of john winthrop highest rates of deforestation in the world – over 1,500,000 hectares of temperate and winfrey citation tropical forest have been lost in the last 20 years. The Journal? Moreover, the air quality is dangerous, especially in Mexico City, as well as in eukaryotic organisms, many of the urban centers along the U.S./Mexico border. [3] There are also economic structural problems due to winthrop, modernization. Its agricultural sector, which employs a quarter of the labor force, produces only eight percent of its GDP.

And in the last twenty years income distribution in Mexico has steadily decreased. The top 20 percent of income earners in Mexico account for 55 percent of all income earned. Per capita income has risen to $3,700 per year, a significant increase from ideal aryan man, $2,000 in the late 1980's; yet, the number of poor families has tripled since 1989, so that 40% of Mexico now lives in extreme poverty while another 20% lives in significant poverty. The Journal Winthrop? This poverty, is largely concentrated in Mexico’s rural southern states, and eukaryotic organisms has an indigenous and female profile. It remains the primary cause of migration to the United States and one of the worst destabilizing influences in Mexican society. [4] Thus we can surmise just as the new wave of the 1960’s rationalized: the the journal of john Mexican Revolution was a failure -- wealth has not, then or now, been redistributed and the poor are poorer today than they’ve ever been. How can Mexico compete in did romeo and juliet take place, the new world and overcome its poverty, or begin at least to start its transformation?

I think the most serious and simple answer is to deal with race. Mexico has to resolve its racial identity. Harlem renaissance activist, Marcus Garvey once said, “a people without history is like a tree without root”. The Journal Of John Winthrop? And while Mexico has plenty of history, it is clearly unrooted and cloaked in confusion because we don’t know whose history is it? Is it European, Mestizo, Criollo, or Indian history?

Like it’s big brother to the north, race is a crucial yet unspoken theme within the fabric of Mexico. Oprah Winfrey? And while the nation proudly states we are one people, socio-politically it is of john winthrop bifurcated, and men (1997 very colonial in winthrop, structure, actually in the same fashion as the oprah citation rest of Latin America (and all of the third world for that matter). The demographics show the Criollo – Creole, lighter skinned, European, phenotype continues to rule while the the journal winthrop indigenous Indian continues to struggle against poverty and citation oppression. These small groups of white Europeans – the remaining Spanish colonists along with French Settlers from the 1800’s represent 9% of the population. The Mestizos, (people of winthrop mixed indigenous and European heritage) make up the organisms largest ethnicity at roughly 60%.

The second largest group is the Native Americans who represent 10% of the population “officially”. However, unofficially many believe the figure to be closer to 30%. The reason for the discrepancy is the the journal of john winthrop federal government 's policy of using spoken language rather than race as the and juliet place basis of classification. But in Mexico, as in the journal, the United States and other countries in the Americas , most Native Americans no longer speak their native tongues. In Mexico this is partly a result of the government's own policy of Hispanization of many of the Native American populations through cultural and linguistic assimilation. Therefore, most Mestizos are in fact assimilated Native Americans, inflating the Mestizo population estimate from 60% to as high as 80%. The unfortunate endpoint for Civil Essay, this process is the dwindling number of Native Americans as more are assimilated and as the linguistic basis of classification remains the winthrop same. [5] Middle Easterners and Asians fill the remaining population at eukaryotic, approximately 1 %. A racial analysis is not a panacea for complete examination as there are several layers to this issue; Mexico’s problems aren’t completely wrapped neatly in Black and White; and of course there is the class issue. However I contend, class and race walk in the same shoes, step for step.

There is a distinction but in this authors opinion, that distinction is not to the degree where class carries more weight than race. I find that even within same race, classism is the root of aspiration to achieve “other” status – and that other is most often associated with Whiteness. The racial hierarchy in Mexico is very much a reality and of john certainly linked to the psyche of the populace -- a sentiment echoed by psychologist Samuel Ramos, who explores the psychological effects of organisms Mexico’s, in his words, “inferiority complex”. [6] Basically, the White Supremacy Dynamic is in effect – that is the belief that the lighter, more European one is, physically or mentally, the better. And from my vantage point, this phenomenon hits the heart of the the journal of john winthrop county’s identity problem and therefore is an excellent source of national discussion. [7] What do these socio-economic realities have to do with Mexican cinema?

Everything! Film is Art certainly, but film is also anthropological as oftentimes we look to cinema to see accurate reflections of society—past and 12 angry men (1997 film) present; however, throughout cinema history there are few instances that tackle, head on, national identity issues – very few films seeking to understand what a country, or a region, or a people are saying about itself . One film that embraces these questions for the journal of john, Mexico is and diclemente of change Y Tu Mama Tambien (2002) . Of John Winthrop? And while there have been several older films to examine race and class in Mexico, such as La Casta Divina ( The Divine Caste , 1976), Cascabel ( Rattlesnake , 1976), Llovizna (Drizzle, 1977), El Juicio de Martin Cortes ( The Trial of eukaryotic Martin Cortes , 1973), I think Y Tu Mam Tambin represents the issue best, at least within modern times, and does so cleverly, under the creative guise of a genre film. The Journal? The genre: part road comedy, part adolescent coming of age drama. This film by Alfonso Cuarn is a magnificent study of race and class in Mexico utilizing standard Mexican thematic conventions and archetypes such as the virgin/ Virgin/ Whore, the long suffering wife / mother, the eukaryotic city vs. country, and young love / adolescent sexuality. The Journal Of John Winthrop? Cuarn accomplishes this exploration all the while creating a unique style that weaves the characters into national signifiers then unfolds the drama in organisms, a very structural manner while also simultaneously presenting a very clear political perspective on the country as whole. Of John? He achieves this Herculean feat by deftly articulating with his camera, the when did romeo take place settings of the journal of john each scene- both the physical, emotional (in essence illustrating a broader perspective in a much more personal technique, rather than simply following the actions and emotions of the prochaska stages of change actors, or denoting the the journal of john place, instead he allows us to gather information cumulatively within a scene, giving description visually and aurally, in the way of a fiction novel). He also uses an Galileo's Act of Civil Disobedience Essay, audio technique that I’ve never experienced, at least not in quite the same fashion – heterodiegetic narration. [8]

This style of narration is not new, but under Cuarn’s direction it seems very fresh, perhaps because of the intent--to politicize and illuminate the background in addition to the standard usage of winthrop informing the audience to a character’s mindset. The Cohn brothers have used the technique with great success as well as French Filmmaker Jean-Pierre Jeunet with his quirky romance in Amelie (2001) . [9] Most filmmakers use narration homodiegetically as Spielberg did with A.I (2001) . Though, none of these examples of heterodiegetic narration have used the technique to politicize a film. Here is eukaryotic where Cuarn differentiates himself, not only does he use narration to inform us of character traits, and intent, but the characters, in their actions, clarified heterodiegetically, inform us on the political landscape and many times in doing so it allows us insight into an unseen conflict between what the actors are doing and saying, versus the true meaning or motivation of the scene—oftentimes creating a sense of irony. Because the narration is used in this manner it makes Y tu Mama Tambien ’s structure very complex. Where on one hand it feels like a non-Hollywood film, exhibiting an of john, outline with dual / parallel ideas as the central theme, multiple main characters, and explicit sexual situations; yet, on the other hand it is classically Hollywood exerting a solid, classical, three act, eight sequence, genre based script. The structure is set up in classic A / B story, but there is a Co-main theme that is organisms more grand in scope than the individual storylines which allows the narrative to break form. Within the “A” story is the drama of the the journal road trip and the exploits of winfrey 3 characters as friends and the journal lovers, and within the eukaryotic organisms “B” story is the young woman’s, Luisa’s, life and background. Then there’s the parallel, lets call it the “AA” story which concerns itself with the current socio-political stew that is Mexico and the critical examination of race and class with each character symbolic of a fraction of the country’s troubled history and the journal winthrop psyche. It is in this sense Y tu Mama goes beyond the mainstream or the Art house, performing instead as a solid example of Teshome Gabriel’s Third Cinema whereby film speaks of the people and social conditions of the Third World through unique non-western technique and story. [10]

It begins provocatively with a sex scene between two teenagers, Tenoch and Ana. While they frolic playfully, we are introduced to an unseen narrator, who will visit us all throughout the film. It soon becomes clear that this astute, omniscient narrator is allowing us to see this story unfold. It’s as if he is telling the story visually then periodically interrupts to give a little more clarity. Act Of Civil? As Charles Ramirez Berg surmises, in his discussion of the Juan Oro’s Mexican classic, Cuando Los Hijos Se Van (1941 ) , which also uses a heterodiegetic platform, the of john narration technique is effective because it reveals a self-consciousness that is rare in Mexican or Hollywood cinema. [11] We soon find out via the narrator that this is story of Tenoch and Julio. Tenoch is the son of the Secretary of oprah citation State, Harvard Economist father and a spacey, bored, wealthy, housewife / Mother.

Julio’s pedigree is not quite as lofty. He is the son of the journal winthrop a single mother who has worked for film), one firm as a secretary her whole adult life. The Journal? They are best friends and inseparable brothers; yet immediately we see the differences and did romeo possible conflict- Tenoch is rich, white, Criollo, and a part of the ruling class and Julio is not rich, dark, Mestizo, and working class. Actually we will see that Julio is the only major character in winthrop, the film that is ideal aryan man lower, or working class. The Journal Of John Winthrop? He is 12 angry also is the darkest of of john all the ideal aryan man characters, the exception being perhaps Chuy, a fisherman, and Tenoch’s mother both though are only winthrop, minor characters. Tenoch’s mother though, holds a tremendous trump card for the story. Initially, the boys are on prochaska and diclemente of change their way to the airport to see their girlfriends, Cecelia and Ana, off to Europe for the summer (clearly an upper class experience for the journal of john, 18 yr old girls). Eukaryotic? At the airport our narrator sheds more light on the class division of the boys. Ana’s father a Criollo greets them and the journal winthrop then the and diclemente stages of change narrator gives us the father’s background: a journalist, activists and now a politician for the opposition government. He doesn’t disapprove of Tenoch but nicknames him “preppie” an obvious dig at his affluence and the journal of john privilege.

Cecelia’s pediatrician father, on the other hand clearly disapproves of Julio which is evident as Julio sits nervously on the living room couch waiting with him for Cecelia to get ready to leave for the airport. This opening sequence is followed by typical teenage male hijinx (fart jokes), and banter (what types of girls are hottest? Etc.), then they drive by a dead man lying in the street. Traffic squeezes by as best it can, undeterred. The narrator again fills in the details. …The traffic jam was caused by Marcelino Escutia a migrant bricklayer from Michoacon. When Take? Marcelino was hit by the journal of john winthrop a speeding bus. He never used the pedestrian bridge because of its poor location would force him to walk two miles to his work site.

The Red Cross took his unidentified body to the city morgue. It took four days for the body to did romeo take, be claimed. [12] Who was he? A poor cog in the machine, one of the of john thousands of 12 angry film) migrants from the countryside that flock to Mexico City every year looking for work and a better life. The fact that he is acknowledged by the narrator but not by the characters is interesting to note. The Journal Winthrop? He is invisible in a way that only poverty can cloak. Within a city population of 20 million people, the majority of which are extremely poor, it is not very difficult to disappear into the mass of struggle. Here is where we also see the director’s vision for the narrator and Civil Disobedience subsequently the story: to embody political consciousness and bring our attention to the journal of john winthrop, the world in which these young people live. Several more scenes ensue where we see the palatial home of Tenoch and his life style, replete with servants -- all of them are dark. In the following scene we arrive at the first crucial point of film, the point of attack - the point in the film where we are subconsciously shown the main idea of the film. Citation? [13] We meet Luisa Cortes, Tenoch’s cousin by marriage.

They have gathered for winthrop, a wedding of another relative. Luisa is a Spaniard from and diclemente of change, Madrid, a point not to be taken lightly as she is the lynchpin and object of desire of the film, a critical political point that I will detail in the symbolism section of this essay. Also here the plot is initialized – a group trip to of john, a magical (and nonexistent) beach called Heaven’s Mouth. Additionally, at this wedding we find many dignitaries including the President of Mexico. Shortly after the ceremony, the narrator informs us that the President had to leave for an important meeting. He had an urgent meeting with the leaders of his ruling party to appoint the candidates for the upcoming elections. The next day he would express his outrage about the Cerro Verde massacre, and deny that the State Governor was involved with the tragedy. After offering condolences to the victims’ relatives he would fly to 12 angry men (1997, Seattle to a conference on globalization. Since this occurs only a few minutes after the Luisa and the Beach trip invitation, I feel comfortable asserting that the presidential information is within the fabric of the point of attack and as such states that Y Tu Mama’s main idea is of john winthrop also about the politics of Mexico and its place in the globalized Economy. And perhaps illustrates the human costs of a Third World, but growing, partner in globalized capitalism. I arrive at this conclusion because of the visuals which accompany the did romeo and juliet take place voice over the journal showing the place huge celebration the behind the scenes.

We see the of john maid staff, and drivers of the various Limousines eating their meals outside, standing up even, not important enough to have a table or even an area set aside for them in the house--an obvious exploration of classism (they are darker skinned Mestizos). Additionally, the fact that there are still political massacres in this country dictate that Human Rights are not a given, moreover, the President’s trip to Seattle for a conference of globalization indicates where the country’s focus lay-- as well as its hypocrisy. ACT II – ON THE ROAD—The Countryside. Once the second act begins they’re on the road. Julio and Tenoch are privy to a secret that Luisa is not, yet she isn’t a total victim here, she has secrets of her own that far outweigh theirs.

Their secret is simple, Heavens Mouth Beach doesn’t exist—at least they have never been and have only heard about Civil, it through their stoner friend Saba. It is sort of an urban myth. They’ve told this lie and now have to keep it alive in order to cover their tracks. So they set off, but to of john winthrop, where? In almost Twilight Zone fashion I would say: “off to a journey of self-discovery”. Yet, the discovery is not only about themselves and their friendship, but also of the stages of change socio-political terrain and of john winthrop iconography of oprah citation modern Mexico. Hear is the triumph of the film. We are also to learn of the true relationship between the brothers Mexico -- Julio and Tenoch -- as well as some poignant universal life lessons through the tragedy and pain of Luisa.

Along the way to the journal, the beach, we’re continually filled with information about ideal aryan man, both Mexico on a macro level and each of the the journal winthrop characters on a micro level. For example we find out that Luisa is not an experienced woman, never really taking chances (classic virgin /whore archetype). She took care of her sick acerbic aunt, got a job as a dental technician - not her dream job by far (she always wanted to travel), and then married Tenoch’s cousin Jano (also fills the long suffering, joyless wife/ mother archetype). Ideal Aryan Man? We don’t know her age but I will assume that she is in her early 30’s. She decided to take this chance with the boys because of Jano’s admission of infidelity. We assume that her isolated moments of deep sorrow that we are shown are the pain of the journal infidelity, but there is so much more underneath her tears as we find out later in the film.

She is a very sad woman. Director of Photography, Emmanuel Lubeski’s handheld camera informs us of her emotional state by spying on her through broken windowpanes or roaming through her immaculate apartment while she waits for the boys to pick her up for stages, the trip. We are also privy to her audio as she calls Jano after stopping in a small village. Instead of the journal focusing on stages of change Luisa speaking into the journal of john the phone, we are shown the eukaryotic organisms emptiness of the winthrop apartment as she leaves her message in voiceover on the answering machine. This is quite an effective technique, much more than showing the Galileo's typical shot of her crying into the phone. In this scene we also see how much she loves Jano because although jilted, she is not scornful. She even lovingly gives him instructions – where he can find the phone bill, and that she put his shirts in the cleaners but he should go to a better drycleaner because they mess up his shirts.

She is a nurturer to the end. Luisa talks to the journal, him as though nothing has happened but in reality she knows she will never see him again. While at this village she meets an old woman Doa Martinez who sells little trinkets, one of which catches Luisa’s eye, a stuffed mouse with the name Luisa written on eukaryotic organisms the front. Several scenes later as the of john trio leaves the and diclemente stages village we are given the the journal back-story by the narrator. …[the mouse] had belonged to [Doa Martinez’s] granddaughter, Luisa Obregon who had died of a heat stroke 15 years ago crossing the Arizona border with her parents, seeking a better life. And although we are feeling the emotional weight and eukaryotic organisms pain of Luisa loss of love, the story of the younger Luisa immediately returns us to the bigger picture, the political economy picture--the poverty of Mexico and the journal winthrop the human cost of its struggle out of change, of the Third World. Little Luisa Obregon could be a poster child for the conditions within Mexico. While we watch Luisa in the car, the camera again roams to show mourners walking in a funeral procession during the voice over. Luisa thought that even after people die, they are still present. She wondered how long she would continue to live in the memory of others. But she preferred not to think about death . We then can see a connection between Luisa and her issues around death.

She seems as though she is surrounded by death, almost as if death is an actual character in the film, as in the journal winthrop, Marcel Camus’s Orfeo Negro (1959). Oprah Winfrey Citation? Her first love died at 17 in the journal winthrop, a motorcycle accident, her aunt who took care of prochaska of change her whom she in turn took care of winthrop when the aunt fell ill, died, then later in the film she meets a little girl Lucero, who while playing in the water she asks to try floating – “…like a corpse”, later she asks the ideal aryan man boys, “do you ever wish you could live forever”? All this coupled with the fact that even her namesake died provides a haunting backdrop in between the the journal winthrop comedy. Julio and Tenoch are the ideal aryan man closest of friends. They hang out together, get high together, have their own humor and inside connectivity, their girlfriends are friends with one another, they masturbate together, play sports with and against each other, they are in a word: inseparable. Julio and Tenoch told Luisa many stories.

Each one reinforced their bond creating an inseparable identity. Their stories, although adorned by personal mythologies were true. The Journal Of John Winthrop? But as truth is always partial, some facts were omitted. It was never mentioned how Julio lit matches to hide the Galileo's Essay smell after he used Tenoch’s bathroom. Or that Tenoch used his foot to lift the the journal toilet seat at and juliet take place, Julio’s house. Again adding the element of class and race, neither Tenoch nor Julio feeling really comfortable in the others home when private. The road trip moves on comically while continually showing the rural people of the country, illustrating life of the indigenous Indian who seems so far removed from the plan for winthrop, the new globalized Mexico. It also shows the true country -- militaristic with blockades and checkpoints as well as the eukaryotic extreme poverty.

As for the drama, it reaches a critical point – the midpoint of the winthrop script-- when Luisa in her sorrow, one day has sex with Tenoch. Ideal Aryan Man? This act upsets the trio’s harmony as Julio watches from the doorway and becomes jealous. The Journal Of John Winthrop? The jealousy comes to oprah winfrey, a boil when in an attempt to strike back at the journal of john, Tenoch he tells him that he slept with Tenoch’s girlfriend Ana. The narrator tells us how Tenoch feels but within the narration is the subtext is of the class status of Tenoch and the political corruption his ruling class creates within Mexico. Tenoch had only felt this pain in his stomach when he was 11 when he saw his father’s photo on the front page of a newspaper. The article linked him to a scandal involving the 12 angry sale of contaminated food to the poor. Tenoch and his family moved to Vancouver for the journal winthrop, eight months. He never questioned why. The next day noticing that the boys are angry at each other, Luisa decides to rectify the situation by having sex with Julio in oprah winfrey citation, the car. Tenoch is the journal winthrop now beset with jealousy, acting childlike and immature reveals that he too has crossed the line, sleeping with Julio’s girlfriend Ceci.

This blows up in a wild but comical exchange. However the most telling dialogue is Galileo's Disobedience where Tenoch after Julio spits at of john, him, calls him a peasant. Equally interesting is the fact that Tenoch refuses to get on his knees to beg forgiveness as Julio had done previously for his transgression. This reeks of elitism. It is trivialized as just a character flaw within the context of the friendship, or perhaps immaturity, or maybe simply for humor, but I think Cuarn is showing us much more here. Tenoch is privileged and deep down feels superior to darker working class, Julio. At the end of this ACT, the trio angry at each other accidentally find the beach.

There they meet a fourth generation fisherman, Chuy, who along his wife Mabel, and their two children agree to show them the 12 angry neighboring beaches, one of them ironically is called Heaven’s Mouth. Chuy brings the friends together again, breaks the tension with his carefree attitude and zest for life. He also serves as comic relief. But of course, within Cuarn’s technique that is of john not all the fisherman represents. When And Juliet Place? Chuy gives us a glimpse into the Mexican “every man”, the the journal of john Mestizo or Indigenous man that is not of the city. Did Romeo And Juliet Take Place? He is the man that constructs Mexico in the same manner that the small town Midwesterner, not the New Yorker or Californian creates the pulse of The US. In many ways so goes Chuy, so goes Mexico. At the end of the year Chuy and his family will have to leave their home to make way for the construction of an exclusive hotel to be built on the nature preserve of San Bernabe. They will relocate to winthrop, the outskirts of Santa Maria Colotepec.

Chuy will attempt to give boat tours but a collective of Acapulco boatmen supported by the local Tourism Board will block him. Two years later he’ll end up as a janitor at the hotel. He’ll never fish again. After they break camp at the beach, we see Luisa finally talking to Jano on the phone and begging him to understand. Ideal Aryan Man? After that difficult conversation she joins the boys, who have now made up, drinking and dancing on winthrop the beach. During this party the boys have a truth session divulging all their dirt – Julio admits to sleeping with Tenoch’s girlfriend Ana many more times and more vigorously than he’d previously admitted to, Tenoch follows suit with his truths about him and Julio’s girlfriend Cecelia.

Finally, Julio in the spirit of the ultimate one-upmanship tops Tenoch telling him, “Y tu mama Tambien (and your mother too)”. After brief silence, in drunken stupor, they laugh it off and organisms keep partying. The next scene moves to the beach bungalow were Julio, Tenoch, and the journal of john winthrop Luisa top off the ideal aryan man night with sexual threesome. The twist is Julio and Tenoch, in the heat of the moment, have sex with each other! Upon waking we can feel the tension: everything has changed. Julio announces that he has to return the car to his sister. Tenoch says he has to return as well. Luisa decides to stay at the beach and continue to revel in the beauty of the surrounding islands and coves. Their connection has been severed- maybe forever. FINALE – BACK TO THE CITY. Once they return to Mexico City we flash forward 1 year to find out that the tension created on the beach has been maintained, Julio and Tenoch haven’t seen each other.

Everything had indeed changed -- their girlfriends returned from Europe and promptly broke up with them, both Tenoch and Julio found new loves and went to college, and on the political front, the PRI party had lost its first election in the journal, 71 years. One day on a chance meeting in when did romeo take, the street they agree to have coffee as it is the journal of john winthrop too awkward to put it off. There Tenoch tells Julio of Act of Disobedience Luisa’s fate, she is of john winthrop dead. She had cancer and died near Heaven’s Mouth about a month after they left each other. She was aware she was dying all along. The narrator finalizes her story: Luisa spent her last four days in oprah, the hospital in Santa Maria Colotepec. At her request Chuy and Mabel never mentioned her adventure with Julio and Tenoch [to Jano]. She gave Lucero the little stuffed mouse named Luisa.

Tenoch excused himself. His girlfriend was waiting for him at he movies. Julio insisted on paying the check. They will never meet again. Tenoch leaves crossing by Julio in the window of the diner as he walks away. What is the the journal of john symbolism here? Throughout this essay I have illustrated Julio and Tenoch’s racial / class symbolism, and one can add their symbolic male-ness or machismo which is place evident in their sexual fantasy’s and winthrop discussions. This Machismo is referenced in the film during the road trip when they divulge to Luisa that they have named themselves the Charolastras - a sort of Space Cowboy (Cowboys who get high). The Cowboy is a staple of the Mexican cinematic landscape and is the very definition of machismo. Ideal Aryan Man? [14] Given then homosexuality angle, this machismo is clearly violated and creates an incongruence that is the journal never overcome throughout the and juliet place film.

Here homosexuality is not treated in the same fashion as in Jaime Humberto Hermosillo’s, Utopian tolerance comedy, Doa Herlinda y su hijo (Doa Herlinda and her son, 1984). All is not well and everyone does not accept the reality and live as one big, happy, new age family. In our case the characters, Julio and Tenoch are ashamed, so much so that they can never be friends again, the sexual act fracturing the winthrop brotherhood forever which means on a deeper level that Mexico continues to be fractured -- the Mestizo and Criollo brothers simply can’t find the Galileo's Act of Disobedience middle ground. Director Cuarn symbolically had them “unite in the bedroom” as they should unite politically, yet because of their pride they cannot stay united thus dooming Mexico in its near future. Chuy’s representation continues the doom forecast for he is simply washed away -- obsolete. Of John Winthrop? His way of life broken by corporate, capitalist Mexico, forcing him to become a cog in the machine (an uneducated worker, similar to the migrant who was run over by the bus in the beginning of the film), who in order to feed his family (barely), takes on a janitor job in a hotel, working in an enclosed facility as opposed to being in the fresh air and of the earth as a “free” fisherman and 12 angry merchant. The recipe is one for disaster.

What is not shown but certainly readable within the narration is the mushroom factor. Chuy will not be able to make a living from janitor wages. He will have to the journal, get a second or a third job; and men (1997 film) instead of his wife and babies accompanying him on his fishing or touring outings, keeping the family tightly woven, she will have to the journal of john winthrop, get a job (uneducated and unskilled), perhaps as a maid or something similar. Without the extended family support, the children grow up poor, largely unsupervised, and create the classic inner city youth culture that haunts every poverty-stricken inner city culture [15] . Thus, if Chuy is in fact, as I contend, the did romeo and juliet take place average “everyman” Mexican, then Cuarn is winthrop making a bold socio political statement – Mexico, en masse, will not succeed. Tenoch and men (1997 Julio need no further explanation as to the journal, their symbolism, Luisa on stages of change the other fills three symbolic roles and needs much further scrutiny.

The first as the of john modern sexualized woman -- The virgin / Virgin / whore, a role she stereotypically has to pay for her by dying a horrible death, following a long line of heroines who left their traditional roles only to ideal aryan man, be brought back to earth in one way or another. [16] She also is the long-suffering, doting lifeless wife, who beyond contentment is the journal winthrop most importantly, responsible. She in many ways is the mythical La Llorona the weeping woman; the citation only thing here missing is the children to complete the picture. The Journal Of John Winthrop? [17] Lastly Luisa (a Spaniard) also represents Spain’s influence on, and relationship to, Mexico. In her death she is in essence emulating Spain’s current relationship to Mexico -- dead and men (1997 nonexistent; however, it is still the mother country responsible for the country’s creation. The Journal? In this instance, Luisa is responsible for organisms, revealing to Julio and Tenoch that their destinies are intertwined, bringing them together in the same fashion that Spain’s colonial conquest brought together the European and Indian which then gave rise to the Criollo and Mestizo. Her importance here goes even beyond the Virgin Guadalupe or the winthrop Indigenous queen La Malinche. Luisa is almost primordial. She is the winfrey citation one who shows the boys their true desire / salvation is with each other; she is the one who births their consciousness -- sexual, moral --and makes them contextualize their relationship. Then she dies mythically as Spain has died as the Mother country. There can be no Mexico without Julio and Tenoch, the darker and lighter brother, ruling class and the lower classes, combining.

Which is why I feel ultimately the sexual tension and ultimate homosexual union between them is an effective cinema technique providing not only shock value and sensationalism, but also subtext. A reading that illustrates oneness to the extent that they both are necessary and symbiotic. They have shared the same mother, literally and figuratively, by birth or in Oedipus fashion, yet their real mother is Luisa whom ironically they share as well. The Journal Of John Winthrop? I think Cuarn is ideal aryan man saying here that Mexico can no longer look to Spain or the developed world in general, for direction. That Mexico must turn inwards on the journal winthrop itself, morphing into a new Mexican from men (1997 film), its many parts in order to move forward. Unfortunately, instead of unifying, Julio and Tenoch, shamed never see each other again. If they “never” see each other again what happens to modern Mexico? Can the race and class struggle ever be resolved, particularly under the auspices of the of john winthrop new globalization? It seems for director Alfonso Cuarn, the answer is a very clear, disheartening, and Act of Disobedience resounding, NO! It has several variations but the consistency is that she is very, very sad.

The simple, open-ended question is designed to help us get to of john winthrop, know you better. MIT Sloan Essays (for the class of 2016-17) MIT Sloan have one required essay at the time of submission: Essay Question: Tell us about a recent success you had: How did you accomplish this? Who else was involved?

What hurdles did you encounter? What type of eukaryotic, impact did this have? (500 words or fewer). MIT Sloan has over the last few years, in line with some of the the journal of john winthrop, other top B-Schools, has transitioned towards fewer essays (we have just 1 this year). Prochaska And Diclemente Stages Of Change? Consequently, as an applicant, you have just one opportunity to bring forth your best story forward. But at the same time on a positive note, you can exclusively focus on just one essay than having to the journal winthrop, dabble your hands on multiple essays. Sloan Adcom in Disobedience, its applications across years has constantly emphasized on how they believe that ‘past behavior is a reliable indicator of the future’ and this specific essay takes it one step forward explicitly asking you for the journal a ‘recent’ success. An overview of Sloan’s AdCom’s interviews and Act of Disobedience Essay panels over the past few years suggest that story has to winthrop, be something in the 2-3 year range. Anything older than that would be a tough sell.

Since there is only one essay as part of the application the eukaryotic organisms, story selection becomes critical. Considering Sloan’s AdCom’s emphasis on behavioral aspects as well as the end impact it would be best choose a story that best highlights struggle and obstacles than merely the of john, success on an absolute scale. Additional emphasis should be paid to the follow-up pointers on the essay prompt: Who else was involved? Which effectively rules at eukaryotic organisms solo accomplishments. How did you accomplish this? This in line with Sloan’s mission to align with the broader MIT goal of ‘Mens et Manus’ or ‘Minds and Hands’ and the journal winthrop as such the focus is a lot on what you did than being just a concert master.

In essence at ideal story should involve collaboration, clearly defined obstacles that you had to overcome and you should be in the heart of the action than being a spectator. In the past, MIT Sloan used to explicitly state that a candidate should ‘what you thought, felt, said, and did ‘ and this can be effectively used a benchmark for the level of detail that MIT Sloan expects. The focus should be on the entire behavioral chain for each action, each twist and each inflection point in the story. Act Of Disobedience? The AdCom should be able to visualize you in action and consequently all the details around what you felt and said also matter than just the strategic thinking and/or the the journal of john winthrop, execution. The felt and said aspects also help the AdCom judge the sense of men (1997 film), ethic and empathy that an individual has (which are a critical part of Sloan’s mission statement). In terms, of the journal of john, essay structure and layout, most AdCom consultants advocate the STAR method for MIT Sloan but I suggest the organisms, PARADE method. This helps a candidate get into additional, and a more granular layer of the journal of john winthrop, thought even during the essay outlining phase and helps to gauge the quality of the content acting as a filter and meets the Galileo's Disobedience Essay, level of behavioral richness than Sloan specifically demands. In terms of content distribution, going by Sloan’s strong emphasis on the journal of john winthrop, behavioral attributes, the winfrey, major focus should be in the journal of john winthrop, the Action, Decision-Making Rationale and End-Result buckets. Strong emphasis should be laid on giving vivid and when and juliet take detailed descriptions of interpersonal interactions, trouble-shooting (and not fire-fighting) followed by the eventual outcome.

Many applicants have a tendency to link the story with one’s long-term career objectives and goals but that might not be the best strategy in case of MIT Sloan. Over the past decade, MIT Sloan has consistently stayed away from asking about specific career goals in their applications and of john winthrop they do not expect candidates to outline the Essay, same in their essays. Unless the story smoothly transitions into your career goals and of john winthrop objectives it would be better advised to stay away and instead use that space to give the essay more color. Essay: Tell us about a recent success you had: How did you accomplish this? Who else was involved? What hurdles did you encounter? What type of impact did this have? (500 words or fewer). Essay Analysis: This is a behavioural essay question and the admissions committee is interested in knowing how you think and act in various situations.

It is an opportunity to demonstrate some of the key traits valued by the committee (global outlook, competitive mindset, unique approach, teamwork and leadership) by reflecting on a recent experience. A good approach would be to prochaska and diclemente stages, tell a story using the STAR framework (Situation, Task, Action and the journal Results). A critical component is the impact portion and the more quantifiable it is chances are it will resonate better with the committee. A second, short-answer question will be asked only when did romeo, of those invited to interview: Essay: The mission of the MIT Sloan School of Management is to develop principled, innovative leaders who improve the world and to winthrop, generate ideas that advance management practice. Please share with us something about your past that aligns with this mission. (250 words or fewer). Essay Analysis: At MIT, a huge focus is Act of Essay placed on innovation and principled leadership as is evident from the mission statement. The Journal? This is an organisms, opportunity for the journal of john you to reflect on past experiences both inside and outside workplace and share insights into your commitment for the betterment of the world as well as into Civil Disobedience any innovative endeavour you are a part of. For example, pioneering work is the journal winthrop going on at MIT in the area of sustainability and if you have worked in this area even as a volunteer it might strike a chord with the organisms, committee.

The Admissions Committee invites you to share additional information about the journal winthrop yourself, in any format. Essay: If you choose a multimedia format, please host the information on a website and provide us with the ideal aryan man, URL. Here the Committee expects you to be creative and bring out the side in take place, you not fully represented in other parts of the winthrop, application. For example depending on your background, you can make a short video of the eukaryotic, traveller in you with stories and footage from different countries and diverse cultures; you can make a presentation with collage of pictures from different phases of your life, etc. In summary, it has to be creative and at the same time speak of who you really are.

Note: The essays are only one part of the Application and the journal winthrop you need to be mindful of its alignment with the other parts to ideal aryan man, make it a holistic and coherent story. 3 Hours Past the the journal of john winthrop, Edge of the World. Film)! Finished Object: Book Report Dress. Winthrop! Last week, I showed you Lila#8217;s very sensible and useful trio of when did romeo take place, tiny shorts, and we talked about some ideas of sewing cost/sewing value, and ways to express that value. Of John! I#8217;m not 100% with my Value The Sewing worksheet, but I#8217;ll keep working with it until I have some kind of ideal aryan man, Epiphany (or you do!). Book Report Dress. Winthrop! This week, I wanted to place, make a dress. I blame the new release of the Oliver + S patterns for fall! They#8217;re so cute! I especially liked this Book Report Dress, and when I saw it available as a digital download. (I bought the the journal, pattern myself, I doubt Oliver + S knows about me, a fangirl.) Besides, I#8217;d pay much more than the digital price to purchase the pattern here, not to mention waiting for shipping or for Galileo's Act of Essay it to show up in winthrop a shop. Essay! I highly recommend these digital patterns, they#8217;re very easy to the journal winthrop, work with.

Lila wears dresses all the 12 angry men (1997, time, and I allowed myself to plan for one or two dresses in her Lila Wardrobe. I chose the rainbow dandelion print about a year ago and set it aside #8220;for Lila.#8221; Then the pink cotton babywale cord came my way and I thought they#8217;d work well together for this dress. Before I cut, I decided to make a new sleeve pattern for this dress. The original design features long cuffed sleeves but I only had .5m (1/2 yard) of the rainbow dandelion print and we live in of john the land of perpetual summer, so I opted for when take place the bell sleeves from the Oliver + S School Photo Dress. The bell sleeves are breezy and cool, but will help protect her skin from the sun. I laid one sleeve pattern on top of the other and used the sleeve cap from the Book Report Dress and the sleeve shape from the School Photo Dress.

I could have simply shortened the the journal of john, original sleeves, but they wouldn#8217;t have a bell shape. My other major alteration was to omit the button loops- they#8217;d be quite bulky in the corduroy fabric. Prochaska Stages! Instead, I stitched the yokes together. The Journal Of John! No buttons. Eukaryotic Organisms! Naturally, when I tried the the journal winthrop, dress on Act of, Lila the first time, it wouldn#8217;t go over the journal of john winthrop her head!

No biggie, I unpicked one side and Disobedience added a snap closure. Next time I make this, I#8217;ll draft a larger neckline for the journal a simple pull-over dress. I used several types of buttons Lila picked on various trips to fabric stores, something about them reminds me of baby toys or candy. She likes them, anyway. I took this with my phone mid-construction. 12 Angry Film)! The dress needed #8220;something,#8221; and I couldn#8217;t decide about the buttons. It#8217;s funny- I#8217;ve become so accustomed to of john winthrop, photographing my sewing, sometimes I can#8217;t make decisions like that without photographing it to help me decide. Does that happen to anyone else? Just me?

I scrounged around my sewing room and turned up some cotton sateen bias binding left over from another project. Eureka! I ran the red binding by Twitter peeps- y#8217;all are such enablers- and decided to 12 angry, use the binding as a trim. I hand-basted the binding because pinning often results in a wavy final result. Then I used a top-stitch (3.0 length) close to the edges of the of john winthrop, tape. It took a little time, but it#8217;s very clean and neat. Lila wore her new dress to preschool today, terribly pleased with herself. I#8217;m pleased, too.

I usually let her choose her own fabrics, but this time I did myself and managed to make something she liked. Men (1997! Win! Now, this dress cost more than her clothes usually cost. Of John Winthrop! I quantified it here: Cost: $ 26.95 (oops, small error on the sheet#8230;)- mostly due to when take place, the fact I used a new pattern and purpose-bought fabric for the journal of john winthrop this dress. I didn#8217;t go shopping online for ideal aryan man a similar dress. I#8217;ll do that for some garments, common ones, but for the journal winthrop one-offs for a little girl I won#8217;t bother. In the oprah citation, comments section from the last discussion of quantifying sewing value, Craftastrophies brought up the idea of subtracting the cost of from the of john, value.

Someone else mentioned adding the hours spent working to the #8220;cost#8221; section. I#8217;m thinking about that- what do you think? It seems to me if I spend more than a few hours on a garment, it has something of an inflated value#8230; Any math minds out there want to chime in? Oh! And Molly at 12 angry men (1997 film), Toforet#8217;s Empty Bobbin made a denim Burda dress, and of john winthrop played with the prochaska, sewing worksheet! Check it out. At any rate, the the journal winthrop, dress was a pleasure to sew and she likes it. Little girls can wear dresses for years if they#8217;re fairly basic, washable, and made of good fabric. Prochaska Of Change! I call that good value. Oh! And the pockets!

She loves pockets, and is especially delighted by these #8220;secret invisible pockets with PINK inside!!#8221; She keeps trying to stuff apples and the journal winthrop stuffed animals and prochaska and diclemente stages sand into her pockets, good thing I reinforced the stitching! Next Post: Bra #2. I#8217;ll try to be brave and take some fitting shots, for the journal of john winthrop science! Then- finally, finally, finally, I can tell you I#8217;ll be launching the 12 angry film), Tiramisu Circus And Pre-Sale on the 25th of the journal winthrop, this month! I couldn#8217;t in good conscience start the pre-sale until I nailed down some production issues, but they#8217;re sorted so now we can have some fun! Why a circus? Because they#8217;re loud, fun, exciting and *extremely* educational!

The pre-sale will help offset the cost of printing the patterns- a big hurdle in the production process. American Duchess runs pre-sales for new shoe designs, and Galileo's Essay she helped me think through my own pre-sale for Cake. Thanks, Lauren! Tiramisu will retail for $17, and I#8217;m offering it for the journal of john winthrop AUD$11 during The Circus! I#8217;ll be posting more frequently, with shorter posts including guides to purchasing knit fabrics, handling knits on regular sewing machines, and prochaska and diclemente a look at how I handled sizing for Tiramisu! If you think of something you#8217;d like to of john, see during The Circus, please let me know, and Essay help spread the word! Is it kind, useful or interesting? Great! Cancel reply.

This is a delightful dress for Lila. You#8217;re right to add the red binding#8230;it#8217;s just adds that extra pop! Beautiful. A similar type of dress from Bonpoint would cost you 176 Euros (about 218 AUD) so even with the cost of the pattern factored in this is a bargain! Yay for upcoming cake. You must be so very excited to see this coming to life. The Journal Of John! I#8217;m so thrilled for you. Thanks! Heheh. She has such a particular style#8230; I never heard of Bonpoint, but now I want to go look. Thanks. :)

Yay ! You know how you get to the end of a pregnancy and ideal aryan man you just want the baby to come already? It#8217;s a bit like that#8230; Love the dress and that fabric is particularly delightful for our perpetual summers! I must get onto H#8217;s summer options why do they grow each year lol#8230;.. Diary date marked for Cake! I scored at spotty today 4m of cotton jersey similar to your dots but in navy and white stripe for $6/m on the journal of john, the clearance rack! Sorry I emptied the bolt but I now have my #8216;muslin#8217; for men (1997 film) Tira washed and ready to go! If you want the selvedge details or scanned code I will find it for you in the morning. They do grow#8230; :) Thanks! Oooooh, I have that stripe!

Is it with slightly wider navy stripes and slightly narrower white ones? :) Thank you though! Oh the the journal winthrop, bookreport dress is adorable. Galileo's Act Of Disobedience! I wouldn#8217;t calculate the the journal winthrop, hours spent sewing into the cost of sewing a garment because I really sew to relax and to be creative. I don#8217;t care about the outcome but it is a nice bonus to have lovely clothes that are well-made and fit. Oprah Citation! Besides, my hubby golfs and that costs thousands each year. So sewing is a bargain!

I am thrilled to the journal of john, hear that your pattern pre-sale will be next week. I#8217;ve put it in ideal aryan man my calendar and I#8217;ll definitely order asap! I love the the journal of john, Tiramisu you designed and I can#8217;t wait to get my hands on it! I actually bought this amazing fabric at a fabric store recently I guessed three metres would do it but I bought 4 just in case. (I always over 12 angry men (1997 film) estimate amounts!) Congratulations on your new business. I wish you all the the journal of john, success in the world! Yes- next week! I just wanted to eukaryotic organisms, be sure of the quality of the of john, production work before I did a pre-sale, so I can show you all what it looks like, etc, and I can know I#8217;m putting out a good pattern. :) Thank you! My daughter has been begging me for a skirt that is similar to my Vogue 1247 skirt because she adores the Act of Disobedience Essay, pockets. Talk about a perfect solution :-) Awesome!

Can#8217;t wait to see! :) Cute dress for Lila! A pre-sale yay!! Can#8217;t wait for next week now :) YAY! Very exciting. :D. This post had me giggling all morning! Tell Lila I love her dress, especially the dandies and the PiNk pockets! Also, everyone I know regardless of whether they know you will hear of of john winthrop, upcoming circus! Lila says #8220;Good!#8221; (mouth full of berries at the moment) and also wants to know when she#8217;ll see you again! :D. What a cute dress!

As a mom of boys, I always get jealous of the Galileo's Act of Essay, fun, pretty dresses that moms of the journal, girls get to make. I have a question about the whole #8220;value of sewing#8221; thing. How do you compare your sewn item to something that can not be purchased? I recently made a copy of a dress I found on Etsy because the Etsy seller refuses to make any of her designs in plus sizes. This is the same with many of the things I sew.

I copy designs from lines like Stop Starring, Bettie Page Clothing, Vivienne of eukaryotic, Holloway, ect because they don#8217;t sell larger sizes. Awww! I really like the patterns Oliver + S has for the journal little boys and thought their most recent cargo pants release was very thoughtful (double knees!). But I see what you mean#8230; Well. There#8217;s the rub.

That#8217;s why I didn#8217;t go looking for a similar dress to compare this one to. I wouldn#8217;t find it. If the designer wants to be that narrow-minded/lazy/exclusive, then she#8217;s missing out isn#8217;t she/he? Copy freely. That#8217;s fashion. Good for you to build the skills to be able to do that. Eukaryotic! Maybe some might not agree with me, but there it is. How cute is Lila? :) That fabric is perfect on her. Winthrop! I#8217;m totally jealous that she can wear Oliver + S patterns and that I didn#8217;t find out about that maker until long after my daughter was too big for did romeo and juliet place their offerings. So sweet! :) aw thanks. :) Too bad for your daughter! Oh no!

They make this dress up to size 12#8230;? I don#8217;t want to be rude, but I didn#8217;t think you were old enough to have a baby that big#8230;.! ;) Aww, thanks. :) My daughter is 8 and my son is winthrop 12 and my daughter is 12 angry men (1997 film) about an inch past my shoulder in height. So kind! O + S goes up to the journal winthrop, size 12#8230; Just saying#8230; She#8217;s a size 16#8230; :p I actually bought her a woman#8217;s pattern last week. Oh well, there are many ways in which having large children is convenient. :) LOVE the oprah winfrey citation, circus flyer. The Journal! Can#8217;t wait to ideal aryan man, get the winthrop, pattern. Hehehe. Thanks! It makes me laugh, too. Ideal Aryan Man! An all-lady victorian trapeze troupe#8230; Such fun.

I bet they have damn good pockets. ;) that dress is gorgeous and i love the dandelion fabric! oliver + s patterns are great even the free ones are excellent. lucky lila! Agreed, they do make great free patterns too. :) Thanks! Lila#8217;s dress is really pretty I have a bit of an O+S crush at the moment too, though I#8217;m limited to getting excited about the boys patterns ;-) Great to see the worksheet popping in again. Yay for the Circus coming to town!Though you might want to perfect that next bra and put your flash knickers on if we are trapezing in the Tira! Yes! I love the winthrop, boy#8217;s stuff, too#8230; And I really like their #8220;after school#8221; pants, with the little ruffles!

Its the kind of winfrey, thing I could draft, but I#8217;d much rather just buy the pattern and the journal be bossed around by Liesl and end up with a great little pair of pants#8230; The worksheet will be in much use, don#8217;t worry#8230; I have a thing for record-keeping#8230; Yes! The Circus will be here very very soon! Very cute! It must be cool to did romeo and juliet, make little girl clothes all of the timeit#8217;s a bit different than making clothes for winthrop yourself. Also: a great many congratulations to you! It#8217;s so awsome that the pattern company is men (1997 film) almost at its official beginning! Keep at it. Hahah#8230; Only recently, really#8230; It#8217;s easier than sewing adult clothes- smaller, quicker to of john, sew.

And the scope for did romeo and juliet take place imaginative fabrics and the journal of john winthrop finishes is men (1997 pretty much endless.. :) So cute! Part of me would just love to be able to dress like a 4 year old! Oliver +XXXL hehehe. I wouldn#8217;t add sewing time to the cost, not because our time has no value, but because for many of us sewing time is the journal of john winthrop of priceless value we love what we do and when we do it for those that we love, it is part of the fun in organisms life, not a chore. The Journal Of John! It is a bonus even. I only think such darkling thoughts when sewing something that gives me no pleasure. Or when I am tired and don#8217;t feel like it even if I like the project. All a bit subjective! :) I could see you dressing like this.. hahah. 12 Angry Film)! I can completely see your pov#8230; It#8217;s so subjective!! Definitely. Lila always looks so pleased with her custom togs.

Love that dandelion print. I do have a question, though- what is the veg on your header today? I have no idea. Winthrop! I rather hoped someone else might tell me. Galileo's Civil Disobedience Essay! I like the texture and the color. Of John! Edit: The husband says it is a #8220;custard apple.#8221; Mmm kay. Oh,the fruit looks like a cherimoya to me. Cherimoya is from the Andes and is sweet or maybe it#8217;s noni.

Noni#8217;s are medicinal and come from Asia while. If it smells like ripe cheese it#8217;s noni. They look similar to the photo but are maybe more oval. Well, my husband who knows these things tells me they#8217;re custard apples. I just liked the funny nobbly shape. 12 Angry! I#8217;ll have to winthrop, go actually buy some now and try them and report back.

I had no idea it#8217;d be so interesting! :) They#8217;re closely related to the cherimoya- http://www.daleysfruit.com.au/fruit%20pages/cherimoya.htm Neat. I love your artichokes! (that sounds weirder now that I#8217;ve typed it! ;) I thought that was what was in and juliet the header?) Love Lila#8217;s dress, and she looks very pretty and happy in it! Motivation to further explore OS patterns some more. Of John! I#8217;m going to the circus!! Still prowling through my stash for the right fabric#8230; (or an excuse to shop?) Stephen says it#8217;s a #8220;custard apple.#8221; Yeah. I don#8217;t know either#8230;. They have some interesting fruits and vegetables here. Civil Essay! Yay!

Circus time should be fun, I#8217;m looking forward to it too! :) Once I had a place to the journal winthrop, start, I looked it up. Now i#8217;ll have to keep an eye out for custard apples/ cherimoya at the local shops. Wow, this dress is simply too cute! I love it! This is eukaryotic organisms so cute: I want one for me! Since you#8217;ve started on your bra making exercise I#8217;ve started stashing all of those larger offcuts of of john, good cotton jersey I have hanging around in the hope of using them on my own bras! I think I just need to buy a pattern and dive on prochaska and diclemente stages of change, in. I#8217;m like you; I learn best by doing. I#8217;m also going to give your worksheet a go for the journal winthrop my next garment. Yes-hooray for ideal aryan man stashing!! :D.

I think it#8217;s worthwhile to consider the of john winthrop, time spent, but it does raise an interesting issue about how much time is #8220;reasonable#8221; to spend and what#8217;s a reasonable cost for the time. We#8217;re in the habit of comparing our work to what you can buy in the store, but those items are generally made in places where wages are much much lower than where we live. (That#8217;s precisely why they#8217;re made there.) I won#8217;t repeat the points you#8217;ve made elsewhere. But I checked a sample cost sheet that I have in a pattern making textbook for comparison. Their materials cost was $9.62 and labour was $4.00 (in 1993). Did Romeo And Juliet! Markup of 45% is noted. Not sure how that comes up with a wholesale price of $62.50, but there you are. You could expect that to retail for $100 or more. So I guess we also need to consider the markup that we#8217;d have to pay if buying this in a store. Well#8230; I guess the time question will have different answers depending on the person#8230; Labor was $4? Sheesh.

How interesting. But you see#8230; I#8217;m not trying to do a costings sheet like for retail. I#8217;m making up something different, a way to try to quantify #8220;value#8221; because putting a price on of john, it using costings sheets along doesn#8217;t count the oprah, things I want to count#8230; I must be explaining badly#8230; :) I may not have gotten your mechanism on the first pass :-) I see that #8220;cost#8221; is the the journal, actual out of eukaryotic, pocket cost to you. I see that #8220;value#8221; is calculated by adding the the journal of john winthrop, notional value of your premium items (e.g. ethics) to your notional cost of labour. Ideal Aryan Man! I#8217;m not clear why the cost *isn#8217;t* included in the journal the calculation of #8220;value#8221;. I see some notes showing that you#8217;ve taken value and subtracted the cost, and I don#8217;t follow that. When I think of the organisms, #8220;value#8221;, I think of the price that I think the item would be worth if I made it as an artisan and sold it. I would include actual materials cost (here $27), labour cost ($80 for the journal of john winthrop a total cost of $107) and markup (minimum is usually 100% $107), for a retail value of $214. I think the when and juliet, markup could absorb the ethics premiums you mention, since the environmental side may be accounted for the journal of john in the materials you purchase and the labour conditions are in the labour cost. I see the other premiums as a way of monetizing part of the Act of Disobedience Essay, value of an item that isn#8217;t intended to be sold, for the journal of john winthrop the sake of oprah winfrey, comparison with regular retail items.

I think I#8217;d add in the journal of john a bit to the value because the item would be exactly what I wanted rather than what someone else wanted to make (creator vs. curator). So total value of say $250. Or am I comparing apples and did romeo take oranges? Well- that#8217;s just it. Winthrop! I haven#8217;t yet #8220;nailed#8221; it#8230; And I can see how it would work to subtract the cost from the did romeo and juliet, value (if you#8217;re like me and on a tight budget this could make sense#8230;), to add hours into the journal winthrop, the cost (except many of eukaryotic organisms, us sew because we like it, so our time isn#8217;t really a #8220;cost#8221;), or etc#8230; I do hesitate to think of my sewing for of john Lila and Stephen as #8220;this is the artisan price for something like what I just made#8221; because I#8217;ve worked in retail long enough to know that an asking price is just an asking price#8230; It doesn#8217;t always reflect the value#8230; Value is in the #8220;eye#8221; of the prochaska stages of change, beholder#8230; The price is what the buyer is willing to of john winthrop, pay. Hmmm. Not sure I#8217;m expressing it well at 12 angry film), all! I do very much get what you#8217;re saying, and that might be a better way to #8220;value the sewing..#8221; Simpler. I#8217;m trying to make it too hard#8230; Except to the journal of john winthrop, me, $250 seems a ridiculous price for a little girls#8217; dress#8230; I know some places charge it and did romeo and juliet take place some people pay it, but I think it#8217;s insane and would kind of the journal, roll my eyes at myself if I attached that kind of price to eukaryotic, my work#8230; Hmmm!

Oh and subtracting the cost from the value on my worksheet was sort of playing around with numbers in a way that was mentioned in one of the previous comments sections#8230; ;) I wasn#8217;t even sure anyone would look at that, and the journal of john playing with the numbers that way didn#8217;t give me a #8220;eureka#8221; moment, so I didn#8217;t mention it. But yes. Your time is a real cost. Eukaryotic! Because it is your life energy that you are trading. Winthrop! It will never come back. You could exchange that time at a job for oprah winfrey citation money and purchase things or you could #8220;spend#8221; that time cooking, surfing the net, exercising or a myriad of other ways but you are choosing to #8220;spend#8221; it sewing, in return you get something of real (real as in a concrete item) value (the object) plus you receive other things that don#8217;t have monetary value, such as satisfaction, achievement and a creative outlet. As for $250 usd being an inflated price, ordinary dresses made out of inferior materials and sweatshop labor sell for $50 or $60 usd. Look at the price of couture, a dress for $15,000 usd seems exorbitant to me, we live on that amount of money these days (of course, in a foreign country) but to someone in the ahem 1%, that is a fair amount. I cannot afford to spend $250 on a dress for anyone but that doesn#8217;t make the dress not worth that amount of money.

If I wanted cheap clothes I would go to the journal of john, Centro and buy a poorly constructed ill fitting garment for under ten dollars made in China. I can take that same ten dollars and buy very nice yardage and make it myself the details and quality only limited by and diclemente stages of change, how much of my time and energy I care to invest. The Journal Of John Winthrop! I can chose to hand sew the entire thing or even use a glue gun, the results are under my control and the resulting value is too. Use a glue gun. Hahahah. Then it#8217;s not worth $250#8230; ;) Oooooh just had a little thought to further complicate Value The Sewing#8230; Adding up the various finishes and prochaska and diclemente stages of change techniques for valuation#8230; Like.. Plain finished seams, french seams, flat-fell, etc.. Ooooh.

Oooh. The Journal Of John! I do love making things complex#8230; I like the way you think. :) That#8217;s a great dress! On the subject of valuing sewing, I think another element for me is that when you do a lot of something the 12 angry men (1997, value goes up and the cost goes down. Of John! The projects that seem like they took a long time or didn#8217;t pencil out are actually learning moments and did romeo and juliet when I look at the whole stack of stuff I#8217;ve done I realize that the value seems great compared to the overall time I put in. The Journal Of John! Also, there tends to be some savings in and diclemente materials because you pick up things less expensively and often use them on winthrop, more that one project. I think for me a lot of the value also comes from the feeling of winfrey citation, self-sufficiency I get from being able to make my own, so I do tend to track the amount it cost me compared to what I think it would cost me in in time and money to purchase a similar item.

I would not consider it to be a deal breaker to do something myself just because it would cost me more because my enjoyment of the project factors in, too, but I do like to try to do the math. I think that your value worksheet might actually add to the fun of the projects since it captures some of the values of creating it yourself that might otherwise be forgotten. Food for winthrop thought! Sewing is definitely not cheap or cost effective for beginners or really while learning a new skill. Yes. Self-sufficiency! I#8217;m like you, if I really wanted to eukaryotic, do it even though it was more expensive to, I would#8230; But usually that also brings in questions of fabric quality etc and I#8217;m just not interested in of john winthrop cheap fabrics anymore#8230; Bargains, yes. Cheap and nasty? no#8230; Let me know if you get to playing, and oprah winfrey citation if you tweak it. Of John Winthrop! :D I kind of feel like I have part of an Act of Essay idea that I#8217;ve been thinking about for a long time without getting much further, so I figured if others played around with the of john, concept then we#8217;d really be cooking with gas.. ;) I love the take, custard apples in your header. Of John Winthrop! do you like them? when I was pregnant with my daughter I couldn#8217;t get enough of them, even though they are much too sweet normally.

Having said that I did pick up some just last week at the market and they weren#8217;t as sickly sweet as they usually are, maybe it is too early in the season. Anyway, I love the ideal aryan man, dandelion print and it looks adorable in the finished product :-) I don#8217;t know if I like them#8230; I just liked the way they looked. The Journal Winthrop! I#8217;ll have to pick some up and eat them and let y#8217;all know#8230; Very cute dress. Organisms! I have been more or less offline because my laptop has succumbed to the journal of john, the hh (heat and ideal aryan man humidity). So I am coming late to the journal of john winthrop, the discussion. Anyway, I am an awful photographer (anyone who reads my blog knows that) but I have a theory why looking at a photo works for getting a new perspective. I look at stuff in the mirror for the same reason when I am stumped. It changes how you are looking at eukaryotic organisms, something and frees you up from preconceptions.

You are so used to seeing it, that you are no longer really seeing it. Recently, I took a photo of the journal, a blanket that I am crocheting and posted it. Eukaryotic! Looking at the photo made me realize that the of john, rose pink stripe looked okay with the other colors but was too dominant for the effect that I wanted. Often when I#8217;ve been working on something and it#8217;s not right, I put it aside. In fact, I usually put it in a drawer so I can#8217;t see it. Then when I come across it again, I see it with new eyes.

Often, I really like it and don#8217;t do any changes but either way I find that I no longer have the same feelings toward it and can solve my problem. I also think that if you take a long time making a dress because you are putting in special details that should be counted in the value, unless you sew very slowly due to inexperience. There is a big difference between production line sewing and special sewing. When my 2 girls were little, I often stacked several fabrics together and cut four pairs of simple elastic waist shorts out at once out of dollar a yard fabric. There was often some slippage and the fit wasn#8217;t perfect but I worked full time and the goal was cheap clothes quickly. I am not saying that the 12 angry men (1997, shorts were shoddy, just nothing special. Of John! There is no comparison to the clothes that I make for my granddaughters these days, where my goal is to and juliet take, make special clothes that they will treasure.

Great points, Theresa! I think you#8217;re right about the photography/objectivity thing#8230; You#8217;re so used to seeing it, you aren#8217;t actually seeing it#8230; Hmm! Oh isn#8217;t that cute!! I love the dandelions, they#8217;re so rainbowy!! My daughter has a similar reaction to pockets, but assumes they are in everything. The Journal Winthrop! Watching her try to oprah winfrey citation, find the pockets in something without them is hilarious :) hmm..

I was sure I commented on this before, but my phone must have chucked a fit. ADORABLE. She is just precious, and this dress is perfect for her :) Love the pockets and the red trim is a fabulous addition. It definitely adds a little pop to all the colors :)

Writing Better University Essays/Referencing. By referencing the sources you use in your essay, you do a number of things. First of all, you comply with an academic convention. Secondly, you make your essay look more professional. In fact, it not only looks more professional, but its argument becomes more powerful. Thirdly, you allow others to check your sources. This is often only a hypothetical issue, but a look through the list of your references will allow others to the journal winthrop, judge your argument quickly. Fourthly, you acknowledge your sources and thus admit that like everyone else, you’re a dwarf on oprah the shoulders of the giants. The essential bits of referencing require you to provide enough information to others so that they can identify the winthrop, source. What exactly is when, meant by the journal of john enough is open to debate, and this is also where conventions come in. Essential is that you do provide references.

Ideally, you would do so properly. It’s not so difficult, and the sooner you get into the habit of film) referencing, the better. There are two forms to do the referencing: including them as footnotes, or use a variation of the of john, Harvard system. Your institution may have a preference, or even a house style. In most cases, your markers will be happy with a consistent and appropriate system. The Harvard system is also known as author/date, and will be described here in men (1997 film), more detail. Within your essay, whenever you make a statement that is essentially based on somebody else’s work, you should attribute the source. You do this by stating the the journal of john winthrop, author(s) and the year of the prochaska of change, publication you consulted. Where the name of the author occurs naturally in the journal of john, the text, it does not need to be repeated.

The references are usually included at the end of a sentence, or where inappropriate in a place where the text flow is eukaryotic, not interrupted too much, such as in front of a comma. This may be necessary, for example, if only the first half of your sentence is winthrop, based on someone else’s work. Switzerland seems to be the ideal place for studying the effects of direct democracy, since no other country has gone as far in terms of implementing such means (Franklin, 2002). The name of the author is included in brackets, together with the year of publication. Some styles put a comma between the two, others just a space: (Franklin 2002). Where there are two authors, both names are included: (McLanahan Sandefur, 1994). Some styles prefer the word and , others prefer the ampersand ( symbol). Where there are more than two authors, the name of the first author is when did romeo, given, followed by et al. (which literally means and of john others ): (Almeder et al. Men (1997. , 2001). The Journal Of John Winthrop. Some styles put et al. into ideal aryan man italics, others don’t.

If you have two or more references for the same argument, you should separate the references with a semicolon (; symbol): (McLanahan Sandefur, 1994; Steinberg, 1999). The Journal Of John Winthrop. If there are very many references to an argument, use your own judgement to select the organisms, most relevant ones. What should you reference? Basically references should be included to the journal of john, any argument made by someone else, including numbers you cite. Ideal Aryan Man. However, statements of general nature need not be attributed to anyone. Of John Winthrop. A statement that the sky is blue alone does not require a reference.

However, if you state that the sky is blue because of a specific reason, then you should include a reference. If you use the exact words of an author (quotation), you’ll need to give the number of the page where you copy from. This is needed so anyone can quickly check the original words, should he or she feel so. See the separate section on quotes. It’s not uncommon that you want to use the arguments of say Max Weber, even though you have not actually read this particular book. Strictly speaking, you should not reference Weber’s work for ideal aryan man, such a statement, because you have not actually read it. Can you really be sure this is what Weber said or meant? The technically correct trick is to add cited in after the reference: (Weber, 1918, cited in Hamilton, 2002). You should always reference the work you consulted, and this includes the of john winthrop, year of publication.

Many books are published in their second and third editions, so giving the 12 angry film), correct year can be helpful. Similarly, even if a book is merely a reprint by a different publisher, give the year of the edition you consulted. The page numbers may differ. If it’s just a second print of the exact same book, use the original date. Some readers find this unsatisfactory, since Weber surely did not publish anything this year. The convention to circumvent this issue is to give both years: the year of the original publication, together with the one of the work you consulted. Sometimes slashes are used between the dates (/ sign), others prefer the used of square brackets ([ and ] sign): Burke (2004/1774) or Burke (2004 [1774]). Another small issue occurs where an author published more than one book or article in a single year, and you want to cite more than one of them. The trick here is to add letters from the alphabet after the year to identify which of the works you refer to.

Use the letter a for the first of the journal winthrop your references, the letter b for the second and so on: (McManus, 1994a) and (McManus, 1994b) are two different works. To sum it up, inside the text, you give the family name of the author, followed by ideal aryan man the year of the publication. Always cite the text you consulted, because in the journal winthrop, the end it’s your responsibility that the 12 angry, references are correct. At the end of your essay you should include a list of references. Winthrop. Such a list of references provides more details than just the name of the oprah citation, author and the year of publication. It’s this list that allows identifying the work cited. Each work you cited in the essay is cited once, and listed in alphabetical order. Note that a bibliography and list of references is not technically the same. A bibliography is a list of relevant sources that may or may not be cited in the main text. References are the sources you cited, even if they are rather trivial. Use the of john winthrop, heading references for 12 angry film), your references.

For books, you put the family name of the author(s) and their initials, followed by the year of publication in brackets, the title in the journal, italics, the place of publication, and oprah winfrey citation finally the name of the publisher. If there are editors, give their names instead of the authors’. If there is a subtitle to the title, this is usually separated using colons (: sign). Where there are more than four authors, it’s common to winthrop, use et al. after the first three, but some styles insist on citing all authors. Sometimes a book is co-published by two publishers, and this can be indicated by using a slash (/ sign). Where you give the editors rather than the actual authors, you indicate this by adding (eds) after their names, or (ed.) if there is only one. The title is capitalized. For example: Anderson, C. Zelle, C. (eds) (1998) Stability and Change in German Elections: How Electorates Merge, Converge, or Collide , London, Praeger.

Granovetter, M. (1974) Getting a Job: A Study of Contacts and Careers , Chicago, Chicago University Press. Grass, G. (1963) Katz und Maus , Neuwied am Rhein, Rowolth/Hermann Leuchterhand. Hall, S. (ed.) (1997) Representation: Cultural Representations and Signifying Practices , London, Sage. Halsey, A., Heath, A. Ridge, J. (1980) Origins and Destinations , Oxford, Clarendon Press. Chapters in did romeo and juliet take place, a book are cited separately, especially if the book is edited. You give the family name of the author and his or her initial, the the journal winthrop, year, the name of the chapter in single speech marks (‘ and ’ sign; not capitalized), followed by and juliet place the word in , and the name and the journal year of the editor(s). If you cite only one chapter, you can give the whole reference at the end; otherwise it’s enough to give the oprah winfrey citation, name and year of the editor. In this case, however, the book itself needs to be included in the journal winthrop, the list of references, too. For example: Allen, J. (1995) ‘Global worlds’ in Allen, J. Massey, D. (eds) (1995).

Hardin, R. (1990) ‘Public choice versus democracy’ in Chapman, J. Wertheimer, A. Men (1997. (eds) (1990). Leroy, P. Verhagen, K. (2003) ‘Environmental politics: Society’s capacity for political response’ in the journal winthrop, Blowers, A. Hinchliffe, S. (eds) (2003) Environmental Responses , Chichester, Wiley. An entry in Galileo's Act of Civil, a printed encyclopaedia or a dictionary can be cited if it was a chapter in a book. The editors are often given on the front of the reference book. For example: Jackman, R. (2001) ‘Social capital’ in Smelser, N. Baltes, P. Of John Winthrop. (eds) (2004).

Journal articles are cited in a way that is quite similar to chapters in a book. The main difference really is that details about the volume and page numbers are included, too. 12 Angry Men (1997 Film). The reference starts with the name and initial of the of john winthrop, author, the year in brackets, the title of the article in single speech marks (not capitalized), followed by the name of the journal in italics (capitalized), and ideal aryan man further details. The details of winthrop journals are commonly abbreviated as follows: the Galileo's Civil Disobedience, volume number followed by the journal of john winthrop a colon and the page numbers of the article. If there are different numbers to Galileo's Act of Essay, a volume, this is of john winthrop, indicated by including it in brackets before the colon, if known. Online journals may not have page numbers. For example:

Burt, R. (1987) ‘Social contagion and organisms innovation: Cohesion versus structural equivalence’, American Journal of Sociology , 92:1287–335. Thoits, P. Hewitt, L. (2001) ‘Volunteer work and well-being’, Journal of Health and Social Behaviour , 42(2):115–31. Small, C. The Journal Winthrop. (1999) ‘Finding an prochaska of change invisible history: A computer simulation experiment (in virtual Polynesia)’, Journal of Artificial Societies and Social Simulation , 2(3). Valente, T. Of John. (1996) ‘Social network thresholds in the diffusion of information’, Social Networks , 18(1):69–89. Pages on the internet should be cited where used. You should bear in oprah citation, mind the quality of the site before citing from it, but if you use a web site, reference it, too. There are many internet sites that are perfectly acceptable as sources for your essays. The reference includes the the journal of john, name of the author and initial, the year in brackets, the title of the document in italics, the word online in square brackets, the place of publication, the publisher, the words available from : followed by Galileo's Act of the URL, and the date when the document was accessed in brackets. Of John. The date is important, because unlike printed works, web sites often change their content or even disappear. Many web sites include a copyright note at the bottom, giving you an indication when the Galileo's, content was written.

For example: Moser, P. (2005) Politik im Kanton Zurich—eine Synthese [online], Zurich, Statistisches Amt des Kantons Zurich, available from: http://web.archive.org/web/20051224111845/http://www.statistik.zh.ch/statistik.info/pdf/2005_15.pdf [accessed 27th October 2005]. Chan, T. Goldthorpe, J. (2004) Social Status and Newspaper Readership [online], Oxford, Oxford University, available from: http://users.ox.ac.uk/ sfos0006/papers/news4.pdf [accessed 31st March 2005]. Newspaper articles are very similar to journal articles in the way they are cited. The key difference is that rather than the volume, the of john, date is given. The reference therefore includes the name and initial of the author, the year of publication in brackets, the title in single speech marks, the name of the newspaper in italics (capitalized), the date, and finally the page where the article was found. For one page it’s customary to use the abbreviation p. , for articles running over two or more pages, the abbreviation pp. is common. For example:

Cockburn, P. Usborne, D. (2004) ‘Burning with anger: Iraqis infuriated by new flag that was designed in London’, The Independent , 28th April, pp.2–3. Handouts from a lecture can be referenced and should be referenced if they are used as the Act of Civil Disobedience, basis of the journal of john what you write. It’s normally a better idea not to use lecture notes, but try to find the prochaska and diclemente stages, original referred to in the lecture. The Journal Winthrop. Not only will you have more control over what was actually said, but also can your readers more easily access books and journal article than lecture handouts. The reference to a lecture handout includes the name and initial of the lecturer, the ideal aryan man, year in bracket, the title of the the journal winthrop, handout in single speech marks, the of change, words lecture notes distributed in the journal of john, followed by the name of the course in italics, the word at and the name of your institution, the place, and date of the eukaryotic organisms, lecture. For example: Burt, S. (2005) ‘Survey sampling and administration’, lecture notes distributed in Survey Research Methods at Cambridge University, Cambridge, 9th February 2005.

Personal conversations are not commonly considered good sources, but if they are what you use as the the journal winthrop, basis of your essay, you should include such conversations. It’s usually a good idea to have another reference to a printed piece, but sometimes this is not an option. In terms of ideal aryan man giving the reference, personal conversations are very easy: the name of the of john, person you spoke to, the year in brackets, the words conversation with the when place, author and the date of the conversation. For example: Smith, E. (2004) conversation with the the journal of john winthrop, author 6th July 2004. The same format can also be used for personal e-mail, or instant messengers. Once again, bear in mind the credibility of 12 angry film) your sources.

With e-mail messages it’s customary to include the e-mail address of the sender in brackets after the name, but it’s essential that you obtain consent from the the journal, author. The subject line of the e-mail is often included as the title. With all forms of personal conversation, the issue of consent is important. It’s always a very good idea to check with the author first. There are sometimes cases that are not so straightforward as the average book or journal article.

For everything there is a solution in the academic conventions. Prochaska. If you refer to musical works, television programmes, or pieces of art, check with your institution how this should be done. If everything else fails, remember the function of referencing, and provide a reasonable amount of information for others to chase the work. Common problems include the lack of of john authors, unpublished documents, or lack of publisher. Where there is when did romeo take place, no author, often there is an organization.

Put the name of the organization. If there is no-one, it’s customary to put the word “Anon” instead of the of john winthrop, author’s name. Men (1997 Film). For example: IDEA (1998) Women in Parliament: Beyond Numbers [online], Stockholm, International IDEA, available from: http://archive.idea.int/women/parl/toc.htm [accessed 28th February 2006]. UN Statistics Division (2006) Social Indicators [online], New York, UN Statistics Division, available from: http://unstats.un.org/unsd/demographic/products/socind/inc-eco.htm [accessed 20th February 2006].

Sometimes the year of of john a document is not known. Where you have a rough idea, you can put a c before the ideal aryan man, date, such as in (c.1999). Where you just have no clue, there is winthrop, no need to prochaska stages of change, panic: simply put the word unknown instead of the the journal of john, year. Documents that are unpublished as such, for example a thesis or a draft article you were sent, should come with the indication that they are not published. Organisms. This is easily done by including the word unpublished in winthrop, brackets at the end of the reference. With articles sent to you, you should always ask permission to eukaryotic, cite; just like you would with an ordinary e-mail.

For theses it’s common to include the kind of thesis after the title, such as PhD thesis or MA thesis . Where the name or place of the publisher is unknown a very simple solution is used: leave the information blank. Winthrop. This is particularly an issue with internet sites. Did Romeo. Including the URL is in this case much more helpful than trying to guess the name of the publisher. Course materials provided to you are treated very similar to the lecture handouts. Give the name of the author, the year in brackets, the course code if there is one, the the journal winthrop, course title in italics (capitalized), the kind of material and its title in men (1997 film), single speech marks, place of publication, and publisher. For example: Peake, S. (2003) U216 Environment , Video 4 ‘Shanghai Boom’, Milton Keynes, The Open University. The Open University (2004) DD305 Personal Lives and Social Policy , CD-ROM 2 ‘Interviews and Interviewing’, Milton Keynes, The Open University.

The capitalization of titles may seem a bit confusing, but it follows a simple logic: it’s the main title that is capitalized. In the case of a book, the main title is that of the book. In the of john, case of journal articles, on the other hand, the main title is thought to oprah citation, be that of the journal itself. It might be confusing that within the journal, the title of an article often is capitalized. Capitalization is not very hard to achieve.

Put in capital letters are all nouns, proper names, the the journal, first word, verbs, and adjectives. Eukaryotic Organisms. This is in fact almost everything. Not put in capital letters are words like and , in , or , or with . Unfortunately most word processors don’t capitalize properly when told to, and put every single word in capital letters, including the ands and withins that should not come with capital letters. Different publishers have different house styles, and you might come across a title with a word you would normally spell differently. This is common with British and American variants, but there are other words, too, such as post-modernity . No matter how strongly you might disagree with the spelling, you should always use the original spelling in the references. It’s perfectly fine to change them in your essay itself, but not in the references. A good manual of winthrop style, such as the Oxford Style Manual (Ritter, 2003) will be able to give you further guidance.

Many course providers have their own preferences or house styles, and it’s advisable to oprah, follow these conventions. Where there are no house styles, using a system such as the one outlined in this guide in of john winthrop, a consistent manner will be well received. You’ll find full references to ideal aryan man, every work mentioned in this book at the end. It’s difficult to write about referencing without mentioning plagiarism. Plagiarism describes the act or result where you take the words or ideas of the journal somebody else and present them as your own. Plagiarism is prochaska and diclemente stages of change, considered serious academic misconduct and can be punished severely. Most importantly, however, your reputation is on the line.

The origin of the word plagiarism gives you an idea what others will think of you when you plagiarize. The word goes back to the Latin plagiarius , a thief and kidnapper—in particular a child snatcher and of john somebody abducting slaves. The modern use in academia brands you a literary thief (OED, 2005). There are a number of when did romeo and juliet reasons why plagiarism occurs. The worst case is deliberate plagiarism (for whatever reason). Careless work may lead to plagiarism, but is not commonly considered as severe an the journal offence as the deliberate case.

Careless work is often a sign of students working too closely to ideal aryan man, the original, and this can be easily remedied. Of John. Without changing your habit, simply by including references to where you got the ideas from, and putting speech marks where you quote, you technically are done. In practice, you still might rely too much on the original and not deliver as good an essay as you could. Deliberate plagiarism, often motivated by laziness, can’t be remedied directly. Act Of Essay. At the time, it may seem a reasonable risk to copy from the internet, but is it really worth it? Bear in mind that there is something in for you, too—that is the journal, something in addition to the grades.

The more you write, the easier it gets. If you work too closely to eukaryotic, the original, there is a simple solution: don’t write the essay with the books in front of you. Of John Winthrop. By so doing, there is very little danger that you copy word by word. Galileo's Act Of. In a way, you force yourself to make the the journal winthrop, material your own: and that is a good thing—it makes a better argument, your essay will be more original, and Galileo's Act of Civil not least, you’ll also get better grades. Rather than having the original works in front of you, try using your notes. As you still will need to put those references for the ideas you take from others, make a note whenever you do so. I use brackets with three X inside, to remind myself that I need to the journal winthrop, put a proper reference. Often I remember very well who said this, so I include, for example, (Granovetter XXX) inside the text. When checking the essay, it’s hard not to notice the triple X; and winfrey citation there is always the search facility in the word processor. Of John Winthrop. By putting a place holder, I can get on with the job of writing without interrupting my thoughts. Equally important, I leave some traces indicating to organisms, myself that there is some more work to be done: finding the proper reference, for example.

If you think plagiarism is hard to detect by your marker, think again. There are a great number of signs that give plagiarized work away. The Journal Winthrop. Technology-wise, your markers are likely to have the same possibilities than you have if not more. Winfrey. If you can copy and paste something you found on the internet, it’s equally easy for your marker to find it on a search engine, again. It would, of course, be possible, to change plagiarized work to the extent that the deed is no longer easy to spot. Usually, however, this is just as much work as writing the essay yourself. Just to give you an idea, the markers of your essay will not only have access to the journal, the same search engines than you have. There is software to scan essays for duplicates; and many institutes even have access to essay banks (sites on did romeo take the internet where complete essays are sold). The most successful tool, however, is probably the the journal winthrop, human brain with its incredible ability to remember.

If you copy from citation, a colleague, chances are that your marker has read this one, too. If you copy from a set reading, chances are that your marker has read this one, too. Knowing what is on the reading list helps spot essays that refer to other works a great deal, or don’t refer to some of the core reading. Your marker can estimate how many readings you had time to the journal of john winthrop, read, or whether you’re likely to have read a great number of papers on the Belgian perspective of whatever issues is set in the question. An even easier sign is having the same paragraph twice in the same essay, for example. There are more subtle signs, too, such as sudden changes in style or formatting. Many people are unaware of how idiosyncratic one’s writing style is.

They are in men (1997 film), fact so individual that writing styles can be used to determine how many people wrote a document, such as the Christian Bible (Jakoblich, 2001). Writing style includes the tenses we use, the level of formality, our own choice of words, the kinds of metaphors we put, whether we use American or British English, choices over punctuation, the the journal of john, length of sentences, or the prochaska and diclemente stages, use of specialist terms. Typographic signs include font size, choices of the journal of john where to break paragraphs, spaces in between lines, and things like proper m- and n-dashes (when copying from oprah, electronic articles). The presence or lack of references is often an easy sign: for example, where there are many references inside the text, but few at the end, or where the citation style changes within a single essay. A marker may get suspicious where there is suddenly a section with many references, or suddenly none. Sometimes, students even include hyperlinks in references when copying from the journal of john, electronic journals; and have them automatically underlined by the word processor. Even where you take care of these issues, a paragraph copied from the internet will very unlikely link well with the when did romeo and juliet take, rest of your essay. The style may be inappropriate, or just different. Essays from an essay bank may be internally consistent, but very rarely are they really relevant to the exact question you have been set. In summary, you can avoid plagiarism easily. This is done by writing freely without having the books right in the journal winthrop, front of you.

Instead, work with your notes, and take care to 12 angry men (1997, put references where you use the ideas from others. Don’t use the internet to copy from, no matter how tempting it is. It will hardly ever be worth it. There is an important difference between citations and quotations. Unfortunately, confusion is commonplace; and the terms are frequently used incorrectly.

Knowing your citations from your quotations is useful when writing essays. It’s essential, in fact, if you want to reference properly. Citations are about ideas you take from others. Quotations are about the the journal of john, exact words used by others. This is really the whole distinction. So, when using your own words, you cite; when you use the when take, words of someone else, you quote. Winthrop. “Why can’t a man be more like a woman?” (Blankenhorn, 1995, p.117) is a quotation, because I use the and diclemente, exact same words Blankenhorn did. However, when stating that families in the US are increasingly defined by the absence of a father (Blankenhorn, 1995), I only the journal use the idea, not the exact words. When putting a reference, the difference between a citation and ideal aryan man a quotation is that for a quotation we always put a page number.

This is done to enable the reader to check the words in the original context. In the list of references at the end of the text, there is no difference. Short quotations are included in the text, and enclosed by speech marks. Longer quotations are set apart from the main text by indenting the quotations, and usually putting in the journal of john winthrop, a slightly smaller font. Longer means about 3 to ideal aryan man, 4 lines or more.

For example: It is true that many voters may be voting for reasons wholly unconnected with social inequalities in of john winthrop, any of the three dimensions. They may attach greater importance to ideal aryan man, some specific issue such as foreign affairs, or they may vote out of personal reasons or habits with which egalitarianism has nothing to do. (Runciman, 1966, p.136) When quoting someone else, you should take great care to copy the words exactly. The Journal. Sometimes, you might want to change a quote slightly in order to make it fit your essay. Galileo's Disobedience. If these changes are substantial, you should use your own words and cite the the journal winthrop, work instead. 12 Angry Film). If the changes are small, use square brackets to of john winthrop, indicate that you have changed the text. For example, you might quote Rawls (1999, p.87) that intelligent people don’t “[deserve their] greater natural capacity”. I have included the words that I changed in oprah winfrey, square brackets, leaving the rest the the journal winthrop, same.

This indicates to my readers that the words in square brackets are not the exact same as Rawls used. For reference, the ideal aryan man, original reads: “No one deserves his greater natural capacity” (p.87). I made the changes, because I wrote about intelligent people, and Rawls was talking in more general terms. Whilst quotations can lighten up an essay, you should not rely on them too much. Your own writing is much more important, and often text you quote was written for a different purpose. The consequence is the journal of john, that the quotations may be relevant in content (what is being said), but in terms of style don’t fit well with what you wrote.

If you rely too much on quotations, you run the risk that your readers will think that you maybe don’t really know what you’re writing about: that you have not understood the material well enough. When writing an essay, particularly when writing an extended essay, it’s easiest to put the Civil Disobedience, references whilst you write. This is the the journal of john winthrop, case, because you still know where you got the idea from. I keep a place holder to remind myself that a reference is needed if I can’t remember the organisms, author right away. Often, I will know at least some of winthrop it, and winfrey write this down. By putting a place holder rather than chasing the the journal of john, reference right away, I can stay focused on the writing.

However, I also indicate that the essay is not completed. Civil Disobedience Essay. Place holders like (Baudrillard, XXX) or (XXX last week’s reading) will help me find the full references once I completed the essay or section. References are needed whenever you write an academic piece of of john winthrop writing. Prochaska Of Change. Even where you can get away without referencing, by including references your essay will be taken more serious. It’s a good habit to put references all the the journal, time, so when you really need to—such as in your thesis—you’ll not struggle, or spend days trying to find out how to reference a chapter in a book. There are a number of software packages such as Endnote , Refworks , Scholar’s Aid Lite , or Bibus that help you putting references. These computer applications interact with your word processor, and automate much of the referencing process.

They manage citations, and Galileo's Civil Essay usually let you search libraries and the journal of john journal databases. Useful and flexible as they are, such software packages need some time to get used to. It’s thus a good idea to familiarize yourself with their working before the deadline is menacing. For example, make sure you know how to put page numbers for quotations. Even if you don’t use a dedicated computer program to manage your references, it might be useful to collect references in a separate file. So, after completing your essay, copy all the references to a separate file.

The next time you cite the same paper, it’ll be a simple case of copying and pasting, without the work of Disobedience Essay formatting the the journal winthrop, reference. When Take. Keeping the full references with your notes can safe a great deal of time, too.
