Avoiding The Top Ten Pitfalls Of Resume Writing. Great Liars! POSTED: March 30, 2010 at 9:28 am. Creating a succinct and attractive resume that contains well-prioritized data is one of the persuasive research, major challenges facing candidates today. Not only liars magicians, will an applicant’s resume be competing against hundreds of others, it must clearly portray the candidate in the most favorable light and as the dissertation, most appropriate choice for the opening. In order to do this, several resume pitfalls must be avoided: 1. Poor or Inappropriate Formatting: The first impression a resume makes on an admissions director or hiring manager is generally the most lasting. Large blocks of uninterrupted text, small margins, text that is very small, or an abundance of bolding, italics, and “designer” fonts make documents difficult to great magicians, read.
Only one font (preferably Times New Roman or Arial) should be employed and never in a point size lower than 11. Bolding should be left to notorious alfred hitchcock, the header information (name, address, phone number, email) and subheadings within the are also, document (Profile, Work History, Education). A candidate’s industry or field will determine whether the resume format will be conservative (i.e. Introduction! Physicians, Teachers, CPAs, Individuals Seeking Admission to Graduate Schools, etc.) or more stylish (i.e. Marketing Professionals, Artists, Performers, etc.).
2. Lack of Focus: An effective resume should indicate to the reader within seven seconds, or less, the candidate’s targeted position and qualifications that match the opening. It’s not enough to great liars are also magicians, list schooling, work history, and activities. Admissions directors and hiring managers will not thoroughly read a resume to guns of august, cull needed information – candidates must provide this data quickly and effectively. Great Liars Great Magicians! Qualifications Summaries should include information as to what is sought (a position or entrance into a university program) and the candidate’s qualifications that are related to this. Employment History, Accomplishments, and Education should build upon what is dissertation provided in the Qualifications Summary. 3. Great Are Also Great Magicians! Use of Self-serving Objective Statements: In today’s economy hiring managers are not interested in what a candidate wants (i.e.
Seeking a position that will fully utilize my college education and anne radcliffe, provide for sufficient advancement within the liars are also, industry). Rather, they seek candidates that clearly state what they can do for the targeted company in terms of cutting costs, increasing profits, and enhancing productivity. Hiring manager’s take note of applicants who place the company’s needs above their own. Equipment! 4. Poor Data Prioritization: A resume should reveal the candidate’s professional academic background as it applies to great magicians, the targeted position or program being sought, and in reverse-chronological order (the last job worked or school attended is listed first within that section). If Education is an dissertation introduction, important qualification it should be presented before Work History, not dead last on the document.
If real-world experience is valued, then it should come before Education. If special skills, such as IT, are at a premium, they should be showcased immediately after the opening summary, not left to great, the end of a two-page resume. 5. Failure to Showcase and Quantify Accomplishments: Hiring managers and Equipment Room, admissions directors will not read every line of a resume to determine what a candidate has to offer, especially if it’s buried within dense blocks of text. Applicants must provide special sections indicating professional or academic achievements and these must be quantified. It’s not enough to write: Increased productivity within the division. Hiring managers and admissions directors will find this self-serving. A better way to present the data is to write: Increased productivity 58% within three-months of hire by great are also great magicians retraining staff on latest accounting software. Providing percentages/dollar figures and time frames strengthen achievements. Alfred! 6. Including Non-relevant Data: Hobbies and interests unless directly related to the current job search should never be included – such activities do not enhance candidacy.
Additionally, birth dates, religious affiliations, race, social security numbers, and marital data should never be included. 7. Inappropriate Length: There is no one correct page length for a resume. The document is as long as it has to be in order to provide a clear and effective picture of the great liars magicians, candidate. Professionals with many years of experience will most likely have two pages. To cram this data into one page or exclude important information in monsieur, order to reach an arbitrary length will only dilute candidacy. The key is to provide only that data which is relevant to the current career goal. When this rule if followed, appropriate page length is always reached.
8. Personalizing the Document and are also great magicians, using Casual Language: Modern resumes are business documents and should never be personalized with use of Equipment an Operating Room “I’ “my” “we” or other personal pronouns. Additionally, the tone of the resume should always remain professional and great are also great, businesslike – slang is notorious alfred hitchcock always excluded. 9. Redundancy of Data: Once information has been provided in a resume, whether it’s in great, the Qualifications Summary, Career Accomplishments section, or Professional Experience section, it is not repeated elsewhere. Hiring managers and admissions directors soon tire of redundancy and feel the candidate is padding the resume to reach a certain page length. 10. Spelling or Grammatical Errors and Incorrect Verb Tense: Once a spelling or grammatical error is anne radcliffe detected by are also great an admissions director or hiring manager, they will stop reading the resume. Guns Of August! Their trust in that person’s abilities is forever lost. This is also true when dates of great are also magicians employment or education are obviously incorrect (i.e. Monsieur Meursault! a recent college graduate listing the date of graduation as 1979 instead of 1999), or when verb tense does not match dates of employment (i.e. current jobs have duties listed in present tense; previous jobs have duties listed in great liars magicians, past tense). Social Insecurity in great are also great magicians, Beka Lamb by Zee Edgell. Professor of English. Goshen, IN 46526. Since its publication in 1982, the Belizean novel Beka Lamb by persuasive research Zee Edgell has received a great deal of international attention, despite its rather conventional subject matter and liars great style. It is a “good read” for people of guns of august, all ages and makes accessible to outsiders a nation and culture that is not well known. Critics, too, are gradually “discovering” the liars magicians novel and explicating its contribution to current discussions of feminism and postcolonialism. Alfred Hitchcock. Although the author denies any “political” intentions in her work (Interview), the great are also magicians book is richly provocative in alfred hitchcock, its political implications.
It may not speak to or take sides in current party politics in Belize, but it implies much about the are also magicians power wielded in relationships involving gender, race, class and empire. I will focus on issues of race, class, and empire, since gender has been the subject of most other recent interpretations. The social insecurity that Edgell dramatizes involves the ethnic threat that Creoles feel from the rising Hispanic population and the socioeconomic frustrations that Creoles undergo as they try to rise from lower to middle class status–all in guns of august, the larger context of liars are also great magicians, Belize moving from colony to independent state. Room Essay. Zee Edgell seems hopeful that, through proper discipline, Creoles can both regain their status in the Belizean ethnic hierarchy and also move from menial to more professional occupations–and without compromising too much their rich cultural heritage. Full appreciation of such points depends on seeing that Beka Lamb represents the emergent nation of Belize. The author clearly encourages the association by pointing out on both the great are also great first and last pages that Beka Lamb won the essay contest on the very day that Gadsden and Pritchard were imprisoned for sedition by meursault the British colonial government. Great Great Magicians. Both Beka’s personal action and Gadsden and Pritchard’s national action were turning points in corresponding drives for self-realization and independence.
And both were of an undergraduate dissertation equivalent degree–not final achievements but first steps leading toward fulfilment. Since history proves that the sedition of the 1950s led to liars great Belize’s attaining actual independence in 1981, we feel assured that Beka Lamb, too, will attain the mature self- possession that the end of the novel implies for her. Of course, conflating a bildungsroman hero with his or her nation is guns of august, not unusual in postcolonial literatures. Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “My Kinsman, Major Molineux” is a classic example. Similar recent texts include Nuruddin Farah’s From a Crooked Rib (Somalia), Joseph Zobel’s La Rue Cases-Negres (Sugarcane Alley, Martinique), and Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children (India-Pakistan), to cite only a few examples. Great Are Also Great. The natural metonymy of having the experience of an emergent child or adolescent mirror that of the emergent nation as a whole allows for both an meursault absorbing psychological account of a concrete individual’s experience and many teasing implications about larger political and cultural questions. The full range of national political commentary in Edgell’s novel also requires that we study Edgell’s close association of Beka Lamb with Toycie. Toycie and Beka are schoolmates, neighbors, best friends, and tied into a kind of extended family by the intimate friendship of Beka’s grandmother Miss Ivy and Toycie’s guardian Miss Eila.
In effect, Toycie serves as a foil, or alter-ego, for Beka Lamb. In place of Beka, Toycie acts out certain tragic experiences that Beka, fortunately, can be spared and are also great magicians can profit from by observing. Guns Of August. Specifically, as a l7-year-old being initiated into sex, Toycie serves as a traumatic moral warning about such conduct for Beka, who at 14 is not yet interested in boys (although her female relatives know she is on the verge). The most explicit identification of Beka with Toycie occurs near the great liars are also great magicians end where Beka Lamb accepts the essay prize, knowing that Toycie would have won it if she were still alive. In the same way that Toycie acts out the worst possibility in Beka’s life, so Beka acts out the best possibility in Toycie’s. With Toycie as an alter-ego for Beka and with Beka as an embodiment of Belize, the main problems of both girls suggest Edgell’s analysis of the main problems facing Belize as an emergent nation and culture. Beka Lamb’s main problem is Equipment Inside an Operating Essay, lying. Toycie’s main problem is sex and conception outside of marriage.
No, Edgell does not mean to imply that all or most Belizeans are liars and fornicators. Rather, she uses these character flaws from the realistic story to imply deeper, more subtle things about larger, ingrained national problems. To oversimplify, Toycie’s pregnancy illustrates the great liars are also magicians propensity in Belize toward economic disintegration and ethnic conflict. And Beka’s lying is a metonymy for guns of august, the general problem of authentic identity, whether in Beka as a person, the Creoles as an ethnic group or Belize as a nation emerging into self-hood following colonialization. Great Liars Are Also Great. Beka is “ashamed of herself and her people” and eventually perceives the “phoney” nature of her undetermined, immature, childish self (Beka Lamb 20). The novel dignifies these personal problems of adolescent girls–questions of identity and socioeconomic success–by regarding them as the most crucial cultural problems of an adolescent nation. Although the question of social class is clearest in regard to Beka Lamb, it is also graphically a part of Toycie’s experience. Her pregnancy is more a socioeconomic than a moral issue. Conceiving a child outside of wedlock has been a distinguishing element of traditional African-American culture in the Caribbean since the earliest days of colonization. The nuclear family is the exception in Belizean Creole culture.
More typical is introduction, a mother and/or grandmother living with children or grandchildren and a number of great liars magicians, other relatives. The father or fathers of the children come and go and contribute some or no financial support. In some analyses, this matrifocal system derives from slave-holding days when owners deliberately broke up nuclear families in order to make slaves loyal to monsieur them rather than to other slaves. In other analyses, it is great, a social pattern inherited from some native African societies in which a man may have numerous wives whom he visits on occasion (A. J. Brown 68). Equipment An Operating Room Essay. In Toycie’s case, the family system has broken down with the great magicians disappearance of her unwed father to Panama and the migration of her unwed mother to Brooklyn, which leaves Toycie in the sole care of a poor, unmarried aunt who is persuasive paper, ill-informed in sexual matters. But, considering the overall scope of the novel, the breakdown of Toycie’s family is not the main point. Edgell associates the nuclear family with the economically successful middle class and the traditional Creole matrifocal family with the poverty- stricken lower class. Both Beka and Toycie need to liars choose between a diploma or a baby- -that is, between socioeconomic success or failure. Without education–which means waiting for sex until educated and married–both Toycie and Beka Lamb are condemned to Equipment an Operating menial tasks in the kitchen or laundry (like Eila), which means protracted poverty and great helps account for the despair that leads Toycie to attempt suicide–exactly as in V. S. Naipaul’s moving story, “The Maternal Instinct,” where sexual restraint is also linked with economic success.
The moral issue has essentially socioeconomic implications. Edgell seems to suggest that Belize cannot succeed as a mature, prosperous, independent nation until it develops the middle-class institution of the nuclear family. If Toycie’s family shows the failure of that attempt, then Beka’s family illustrates a successful emergence out of the Creole lower class into the small Creole middle class. Guns Of August. On both sides of liars are also great magicians, Beka’s family tree, her own family–Bill and Lilla’s–is the only married nuclear family. Alfred Hitchcock. In the maternal branch of great liars are also magicians, her family tree are four informal sexual liaisons: Beka’s aunt Tama lived with a “gentleman” in Honduras for fifteen years; her maternal grandmother conceived Tama and Room Essay Lilla with a half-bakra bushman father, who is now living with a Maya woman in the bush; his father was an Englishman who fathered him with a Creole woman; and Great-gran Straker lived with a “gentleman” who was a woodcutter. Less is known about Father Bill’s family, although near the end of the book Gran Ivy admits to Beka that “Toycie’s first trouble caught me too, and I turned to rocking the cradle” (170).
She gave up her own dream of success (joining the circus) and became a washerwoman instead. How it was that Bill married Lilla and established a successful nuclear family is not entirely clear. Are Also Great Magicians. We know only that he was already a hard, responsible worker at 14 years of age (28), and we see that the nuclear family fits Lilla’s fascination with the fact that her grandfather was an Englishman. Monsieur. Her anglophile admiration for English expatriates and her rather pathetic attempt to grow English roses in Belize suggest that she has appropriated other white cultural values, too, including the importance of a nuclear family. The Lamb family is clearly an anomaly in Belize City–so much so that grocer Gordillo comments on liars magicians how “lucky” Becka is to be living with both a mother and a father (39). The Hartleys are the only other Creole nuclear family on Cashew Street, and they are so much wealthier than the meursault Lambs as to belong to another social realm entirely. When Beka makes an inventory of the Creole families on her street, she mentions five husbandless matrifocal households before Gran interrupts her (145).
The fact that Beka’s inventory comes as a reverie in the middle of her essay-writing suggests that she is obsessed with the possibility that her life may turn out are also, like theirs and Toycie’s–just as at Great-Gran Straker’s wake she was horrified by Miss Flo’s choking report that her daughter had just had her third child by meursault her third boyfriend. Propelling the liars great magicians social rise of this nuclear family is the hard work of Father Bill Lamb. One thing makes him significantly different from other Creole men of monsieur, his class: He has been willing to overcome the traditional Creole male bias against earning a living by the “undignified” (82) means of trade or business. Educated Creole men aim at civil service jobs. Less-educated Creole men have not accepted agriculture or business as replacement occupations for liars, seasonal woodcutting, which is now a virtually defunct occupation. To Bill’s credit, he has been willing to surrender his cultural pride and serve his boss and their customers without “condescension” (82). Persuasive. To which Bill would add that he has been willing to “struggle” (21)–to work hard and long hours–beginning at Beka’s age.
Bill’s reward is that he has a white-collar job, membership in the Creole club, and is prosperous enough to next want a septic tank and toilet and perhaps even to move to a better neighborhood (42). The foliage from their lot that breaks down their neighbors’ fences is symbolic of magicians, their unusual prosperity, which makes their Creole neighbors “resent” them (41). Thus Bill’s family duplicates the archetypal experience of lower-middle-class families in other western cultures: by hard work and discipline they have raised their social status, although they remain keenly aware of the possibility that they might easily slip back into poverty. Hitchcock. The American proverb, “From white to blue collar in one generation,” haunts them. Beka’s failing in school or becoming pregnant would be such a slip–perhaps back to the dreaded “kitchen work” (67) or “washing bowl underneath the house bottom” (2). They may not be consciously aware of it, but the great liars are also magicians Lambs have abandoned some traditional Creole values in order to alfred rise in society.
Lilla grows English roses and great liars great Beka straightens her hair. In addition to his attitude toward business, Bill has also given up Protestantism (the traditional English faith) for anne radcliffe, Catholicism (the growing Hispanic- related faith). He has also given up his preferred holidays on the Sibun River, where traditional Creole culture thrives best, to holiday instead on St. George’s Caye with the Blanco family. By such compromises the Lambs raise their status. Edgell seems essentially to recommend the nuclear family, education and hard work within the dominant economic system as the necessary or best means of liars great magicians, “progress” for Belize into the modern world. Although such capitalist, middle-class values may seem very conservative to liberal critics from the anne radcliffe First World, they are, oddly, liberal innovations for a Creole culture that, in great liars great, its family system, oppresses women and in other ways is ill-equipped to build a prosperous, free society. The question of race and ethnic relations within an independent Belize is a prominent theme in Beka Lamb, as it continues to be today, some 35 years beyond the setting of the novel.
A recent essay by a Belizean deals directly with the continuing problem of ethnic relations in undergraduate introduction, Belize. In it, Francis Humphreys quotes Harriet W. Topsey’s worst-case analysis: “Ethnic consciousness is leading Belize into an escalating ethnic war” (11). Great. Assad Shoman’s analysis is more realistic: “While it has long been the accepted wisdom that total racial harmony exists in Belize, the notorious truth is great liars magicians, that there is a considerable degree of prejudice and discrimination among, and even within [ethnic] groups” (11). Nigel Bolland is cautiously optimistic: “Real national liberation and human emancipation may yet be achieved in Belize on the basis of a national integration that respects racial and cultural pluralism” (11). Humphreys’ own solution for the problem is to educate Creoles and Caribs in their common African heritage. Wise though his approach may be, it deals with only one element of racial conflict in Belize–that between Creoles and Caribs.
Although the Creole-Carib conflict is introduction, historically ingrained, it is a conflict within one racial group and, in the case of the Caribs, involves relatively few people. Edgell, too, mentions that conflict but does not dramatize it. Instead, she dramatizes the more recent, growing conflict between Creoles and Hispanics. This is a potentially more serious one for Belize since it involves two different racial groups that are also the largest ethnic groups in the country. In Hispanic vs.
Creole the liars are also great issue of race is also merged with a conflict over economic and political power, which is less present in the Creole-Carib conflict. Bill baldly states the problem to Miss Ivy: “Hatred of British colonialism unites us now. There are so many races here I wonder what will keep us together once they leave” (96). Granny Ivy speaks the hopeful solution to Bill, who has just done his patriotic duty by eating the spicy Spanish food that she has prepared: “We’ll have to get used to it, Bill. Don’t you hear what the politicians are saying out at Battlefield Park? We must unite to build a nation” (150). How much racial unity does the meursault novel imply? The first review of the book by a Belizean, Fr.
Charles Hunter, is explicitly aware of the persistent social problem and looks to the book–both hopefully and nervously–as a contribution to its solution. Seven times in great are also great magicians, his short essay Hunter refers to the “multi- racial” society of Belize. He implies that–but does not show how–the novel is part of the persuasive research paper solution. Heidi Ganner sees in the author’s attitude an “impartiality” toward other groups, despite her “leanings” in “favour of her own race.” In Bill and Lilla she sees “at heart sincere supporters of a free multi-racial Belize” (90). Flockemann finds that, in the novel, “integration of some kind is held out as a possibility for Beka and her country” (46). Such vague feelings may indeed represent the liars are also great intentions of the author.
However, they do not mirror the intensity of the problem as depicted in the book, nor the problematic way the alfred hitchcock book resolves the problem. Early on, the novel rather blandly announces its theme of ethnic conflict: “[Belize City] was a relatively tolerant town where at great liars are also, least six races . . . lived in a kind of harmony” (11) . . . “Each race held varying degrees of prejudice concerning the others” (12) . . Guns Of August. . But “in times of danger, it was a tradition for all races to present a united front” (12). One notices immediately a hypersensitivity in the author and her speech community to “difference,” especially in referring to the six main ethnic groups in Belize as six different “races.” The seven groups that the great magicians book actually mentions could be arranged in the following order in terms of the way Beka’s Creole group has tended to anne radcliffe look at other groups. They are arranged, from top to bottom, from high to great liars are also great magicians low prestige–and, not coincidentally, generally from light skin down to darkest skin: Expatriates — white colonialists and other foreign residents.
Bakras — white citizens of guns of august, Belize. Creoles — mixed whites and Africans. Panias — mestizos (mixed Spanish and liars are also great magicians native Americans) Maya — native Americans of guns of august, Belize. Coolie — descendants of East Indian indentured servants. Carib — dark Africans with Carib Indian admixture. Beka Lamb dramatizes primarily the ethnic conflict between creoles and panias in the pecking order depicted above. In Gran Ivy’s “befo’ time” creoles indeed dominated the liars are also panias in sheer number of population, in persuasive, educational level and in influence in national affairs, thanks to their English-language skills that made them the preferred group for staffing the colonial bureaucracy. Until recently, Spanish speakers tended to live in the districts — especially Orange Walk and Corozal — retain their native language and remain on the fringes of national affairs. Great Great Magicians. With independence, with a creole out-migration to the United States, with the economic prosperity of mestizo cane-growers and fishermen, and with an in-migration of undergraduate, mestizos from Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador, the situation has changed, and continues to change. The actual situation in Beka Lamb shows that as early as the1950s, the setting of the book, the great are also magicians panias had already superseded the creoles in education and economic power.
The point is made clear as early as paragraph three, where Beka recalls earlier predictions that “the prizes would go to dissertation bakras, panias or expatriates” (1). Clearly, in great liars great magicians, her educational career Beka is anne radcliffe, competing within a Spanish-Catholic school culture, which still operates the are also magicians best schools in Belize City. And as one of the few creole girls attending the school, she is clearly the underdog. Her father also lives his life as a subordinate in monsieur, Spanish-dominated business culture. He has worked for Blanco since his teenage years. He is beholden to a pania for his livelihood, the liars are also great magicians vacation spot for his family, and the black car used for Great-Gran Straker’s funeral. Two symbolic names given by Edgell to her Hispanic characters suggest this new ascendency. “Blanco,” of course, means “white,” and notorious alfred hitchcock suggests that the Hispanics represent a new aristocracy of the coveted skin color. Emilio’s family name, “Villanueva,” means “new estate,” which again suggests a new establishment.
Fr. Hunter reads positive signs of racial harmony and great liars are also magicians integration in the fact that the Lambs live with the Blancos on St. Guns Of August. George’s Caye on holiday and that Mr. Blanco has a skiff named Nigger Gial. In actuality, those details are very sinister.
Yes, the Lambs vacation with the Blancos, but as second-class citizens. They live below the house and cook in an outdoor kitchen, like servants, while the Lambs look at liars are also magicians, Mr. Blanco as a “deity” (51), accept gifts of food from Mrs. Blanco and alfred watch the Blanco children play (separate from them) in their anklets and leather shoes. Are Also Magicians. Spanish culture dominates Beka Lamb and undergraduate dissertation her creole family in the same way that Mr. Liars Are Also Great. Blanco rides and Equipment Inside an Operating Essay drives Nigger Gial when he skims across the sea. The families remain separated by “wealth, class, colour” (51), and the Lambs are in a subordinate position, beholden to the Blancos. But it is in the development of the relationship of Toycie and Emilio where the Creole-Spanish conflict emerges the strongest and where Edgell clarifies its relevance to Belizean national and international politics.
Both Beka and magicians Toycie know that “panias scarcely ever marry creole like we” (47), but Toycie nevertheless tries to “raise her color” (47) by believing in Emilio’s promise to marry her. He “toys” with Toycie (Young), to her tragic destruction. It is persuasive research paper, historically and great magicians politically symbolic that the impregnation of introduction, Toycie takes place in the cemetery located on great are also great St. George’s Caye. St. George’s Caye, of course, was the site of the naval victory in 1798 when the English buccanneers (=pirates) who had settled in Belize routed a small Spanish fleet trying to enforce Spain’s territorial claims in Inside an Operating, Belize. It is this victory that Belizeans celebrate every September 10, National Day, and that has become ceremonially symbolic of Belize’s independence — first from Spain, nowadays from England.
Following the Battle of St. George’s Caye, Belize was a de facto property of England, despite continuing quasi-legal claims to the territory by Spain and great magicians Spain’s eventual successor, Guatemala. On the social level, Emilio’s sexual conquest of Toycie shows how the Spanish now dominate and introduction exploit the Creoles. Since the Creoles always identified with the English in are also great magicians, the issues raised by Inside an Operating the Battle of St. Great Liars Are Also Magicians. George’s Caye, on the level of international politics the introduction impregnation also acts out the fact that the ultimate political victory has now been won by Spain in the form of a gradually dominating Spanish culture in Belize. That same issue is at the heart of the overtly political discussion urged upon the Lamb family by the political activist, Gran Ivy. She is a member of the Peoples Independent Party, or P.I.P., which is liars magicians, a thinly disguised version of the Peoples United Party, or P.U.P., which led Belize to independence and is still a major political party in guns of august, Belize.
Like the P.U.P., the P.I.P. is accused of accepting money from Guatemala in support of its political goals. Whether the fictional or actual political party ever did so is not clear, but the liars are also magicians bias of the PIP/PUP toward Spanish Central America has always been clear. That bias was former Premier George Price’s answer to the important question: “Where does Belize’s true identity and best future lie after independence from colonizing Britain?” The options in guns of august, the book are clearcut. Great Liars Are Also Magicians. One is with the West Indies Federation of former British colonies in the Caribbean area. As proposed by England, such a federation would help preserve England’s hegemony in the region and re-inforce English-speaking culture in Belize–despite the great distance that separates the former Caribbean colonies in geography, history and culture. Lilla and Bill, both anglophiles, clearly support the Federation. The other option–embraced by Gran Ivy–is for Belize to anne radcliffe accept and exploit its geographic destiny; that is, to take advantage of the economic potential of great liars are also, its being the alfred only English-speaking country on the Central American mainland. Liars Great. Since that entails making peace with Guatemala’s claims and establishing good cultural and economic relations with its Spanish-speaking neighbors, the notorious alfred hitchcock risk is that Belize might in the process sacrifice some of its British culture, institutions and loyalties. In such a scenario, the great liars are also great magicians panias will flourish and the creoles will be diminished.
Both in the 1950s when the story is set and in 1982 when the book was published- -and Guatemala was still threatening to invade–these were life-and-death issues, especially for creoles. Zee Edgell was uncannily prescient in dramatizing the Inside Room future ethnic shift in great are also great, Belize. As Belize’s “1991 Population Census: Major Findings” indicates, in anne radcliffe, 1980, just preceding independence and the publication of Beka Lamb, the Creoles still outnumbered the great are also magicians Mestizos. Creoles constituted 40% of the population; Mestizos, 33.4%. But by ten years later, in monsieur meursault, 1990, the proportions were dramatically reversed: Mestizos, 43.6%; Creoles, 29.8% (6-7). A major factor was out-migration by liars are also magicians creoles (mainly to the United States) and in-migration by mestizos (mainly from Guatemala). The 1990 census showed that 82.4% of Belize’s foreign-born population was mestizo (41.1% Guatemalan) (13). The figurative dominance of mestizos that Edgell depicts in Beka Lamb has now become literal, and is likely only to Inside an Operating Essay increase in the future. Fortunately for creoles, however, since independence Belize’s English-speaking identity has been somewhat stabilized by other influences. Membership in liars magicians, the United Nations has lent authority to Belize’s independence, thus leading Guatemala to quietly abandon its territorial claim.
What the novel does not anticipate very well is the dramatic increase in U.S. Guns Of August. hegemony over Belize, thanks to the Belizean dollar becoming tied to the American dollar, Americans touring and great magicians investing in Belize, and air transportation links to the U.S. Persuasive. far outnumbering links with England, the Caribbean or even the great Central American countries. The best token of U.S. dominance is that the largest out-migration from Belize is to the United States, with 85% moving there (15)–rather than England, Guatemala or Mexico, as one might expect. Thus far, the American influence (including satellite TV) supports the Creole/English tradition despite the increasing population and socioeconomic influence of Hispanics. Edgell shows this nascent American influence in Toycie’s mother’s residence in Brooklyn and the influence of persuasive paper, American sisters on liars magicians Beka at Inside an Operating Room, St. Cecilia’s School. The rising threat by panias to creoles is implied by great liars great magicians Beka’s efforts in guns of august, school against the Spanish-Catholic system and especially by Toycie’s ill-fated fascination with Emilio. There are no happy resolutions to these ethnic tensions–certainly no integration or implied harmony. Toycie crosses out “Espana” and writes “Belize” in the guitar she received from the great magicians English woman. Beka rejects Gran Ivy’s suggestion that she go to Mexico and study Spanish. Emilio and his mother, once friendly to Toycie and persuasive Beka, turn cold.
Daddy Bill chokes on Spanish food. And Miss Arguelles, a creole, flaunts her arse in Father Mullins’ face, screeching: “You are American but I know you have Spanish blood” (104) –cursing him thus at the very moment when Toycie is revealing her pregnancy to Emilio outside St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Great Great. Creoles like Toycie suffer to the death. Creoles like Daddy Bill endure second-class citizenship. Only rarely, like Beka, do they win the dissertation contested prize. Finally, what does the novel imply about the effect of colonization on the native? The empire is overtly present, of course, in the British government’s conflict with Gadsden and Pritchett, whom they accuse of sedition. Becka clearly sides with her Gran- -and against her parents–in supporting Gadsden and Pritchett’s resistance to colonial authorities. In equating Beka’s struggle with that of Gadsden and great liars are also magicians Pritchett, Edgell makes it clear that she prefers an undergraduate independent Belize to a colonized one. The preceding discussions of socio-economic and great ethnic problems in this paper are also contingent on the colonizing process: Creoles are poor because they have been exploited by the British; and ethnic conflict in Belize stems at least in part from persuasive research paper, colonizers’ historic exploitation of ethnic differences to “divide and conquer” the great liars are also magicians natives.
As Evelyn O’Callaghan has pointed out, the colonial institution that most impinges on Beka’s experience is St. Cecelia’s Academy, operated by Essay the American Sisters of Charity. According to O’Callaghan, “Beka Lamb focuses on women’s experience and implicitly equates economic underdevelopment under colonial rule with the devaluation of great are also great, black working-class women under an educational system run by American nuns” (“Edgell”). This indictment of St. Inside An Operating Room Essay. Cecelia’s is certainly apt in regard to Toycie, whose life ends in great great, disaster precisely because the Sisters of Charity show her no charity in her desperate situation. However, St. Cecelia’s influence on heroine Beka is more subtle and ambiguous. In fact, despite its obvious limitations, St.
Cecelia’s actually contributes a great deal to her development into a Creole of “high mind.” The obvious limitations of the school, of research paper, course, are found in Sister Virgil and Father Nunez. Both are characterized as over-reacting to liars are also new situations in which they find themselves. Monsieur. Sister Virgil is over-zealous in great are also great magicians, strictly applying the rules of the academy to Toycie’s pitiful situation. Alfred Hitchcock. Her strictness may represent a public enactment of her essentially ascetic nature; her name of “Virgil,” after all, suggests “virgin,” as O’Callaghan points out (“Driving” 70). Are Also Great. Or her strictness may be explained by the fact that “she’s only just come” to Belize (87-88) and has not yet accommodated her principles to the cultural reality that surrounds her. The nickname that her fearful students give her — “Mighty Mouse” — suggests that she is anne radcliffe, not always or entirely the villain that she appears to be in Toycie’s case. As we shall see later, at one point she speaks some of the great liars are also magicians truest, most important words in the book.
Father Nunez, too, has entered a new reality in which he over-reacts. Not only is he one of the very few priests drawn from the native population, but he was even ordained in Rome. Like many converts, he has become more pious, more zealous than his expatriate converters. His social insecurity manifests itself in a closed mind, a lack of guns of august, understanding of others and a desire to shed his Belizean identity (89). He poses no particular threat to Beka, but in the novel he represents the great magicians truly “assimilated” native with a colonized mind. Edgell makes him seem more comic and pathetic than fear-inducing. If St. Cecelia’s is the incarnation of menacing colonialism, as O’Callaghan would have it, then Edgell peoples the rest of the staff with surprisingly attractive, somewhat innocuous, and notorious alfred hitchcock often very helpful religious people.
Two seem to great magicians be merely idiosyncratic: Sister Mary Frances, a six-foot tall British nun, and Sister Mary Bernadette, an aged, half- crazed Irish nun who has spent twenty-five years in Belize. The other three move beyond the innocuous and become positive, active agents for guns of august, change in Beka’s life. Father Rau, an American, responded to Bill’s appeal for liars great, help and successfully persuaded Sister Virgil and Father Nunez to allow Beka to return to school, despite her heretical comments. He has “joking ways, a humble manner and an aptitude for persuasion” (92). The Mother Provincial surprises Beka by anne radcliffe being a jolly woman who applauds Beka’s folksong program, tells a funny story, seems eager to learn about Belize, and awards Beka first prize for her essay. As head of the order of great are also magicians, Sisters of introduction, Charity, she embodies their essence — and in Edgell’s depiction it is an attractive essence. But it is great liars are also great, Sister Gabriela, of course, who represents the Sisters of Charity in bringing out the best in Beka Lamb. Gabriela–whose name suggests the archangel annunciator–encourages Beka to enter the essay contest, as a creative way of Inside, providing a more relevant education than the “London” curriculum does (94). An American, Gabriela even visits Beka at her home, admires the native Creole architecture of the great great interior and relates well to Beka’s mother and grandmother. The “glint of Equipment, disrespect” that Beka sees in Gabriela’s eyes–and that makes her human, rather than merely a symbolic foil to Sister Virgil–brings out the best of great great magicians, Beka as a Creole: “in her best creole drawl” she declares her intention to return to school, thereby surprising Sister Gabriela and her mother and Gran.
The topic of the paper that leads to Beka’s success–the arrival of the Sisters of Charity in Belize in 1886–is an odd one. Following the thinking of O’Callaghan and Bromley (13), Beka’s pursuit of the topic could become just another way for the school to overcome her resistance and anne radcliffe appropriate her under its hegemonic power, thereby creating a colonized mind in liars are also, Beka. Beka’s work does, of course, make her a star pupil at St. Cecelia’s. However, the way she carries out her research and the effect of her work upon Beka help her escape whatever colonizing intention the original assignment had. Anne Radcliffe. First, Beka learns a lot about history–not so much about the religious order but more about her own country, as the Mother Superior notes (165).
Most important, Beka researches the subject not by consulting official sources, such as colonial newspapers, archives and books, but by great liars are also great magicians interviewing Mr. Robateau, who was an notorious hitchcock eyewitness to the arrival of the great are also magicians sisters. In other words, she writes an Inside Essay alternative history by using unofficial, folk, native sources. In effect, her paper ends the novel in a manner opposite of the great are also magicians famous conclusion to Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, where the point of view suddenly shifts to that of the research paper British District Commissioner and signals the beginning of African history and experience as viewed and written by foreigners. Beka Lamb ends with the history of Belize being written by a native and from a native point of view. Beka’s achievement places her in the ranks of other colonized subjects–such as C. L. James and Jamaica Kincaid–who say that they have used the are also great magicians substance of guns of august, a colonial education ultimately to triumph over it (Birbalsingh 17, 147-48).
Toycie is destroyed by her direct confrontation with the colonial system. Father Nunez cooperates fully with it and great liars are also great ends up with a colonized mind. But Beka finds a way to use the colonial system to introduction develop the great magicians Creole “high mind” that her Gran so much admires. Beka Lamb becomes a self-created, autonomous young woman by the end of the paper novel. Her identity — and, by implication, the identity of the New Belize — is complex and subtly drawn. On the social level, one is impressed by Beka’s apparent lack of friends at school and on Cashew Street, following Toycie’s death. In Toycie’s place, Beka makes friends only with a Mayan girl, Thomasita Ek, who is also an outsider at St. Cecilia’s Academy. On a national scale, that friendship lacks much real significance, since the Mayas tend to great are also great magicians be so culturally and geographically remote from Inside an Operating Essay, urban culture that no true, longstanding ethnic conflict has thereby been bridged.
As a political symbol, however, there may be more significance in Thomasita Ek. For as Belize moved toward independence, the P.U.P. and transitional authorities chose the ancient Mayas upon which to construct an great great “official” national identity. Hence, the new inland capital city of Equipment, Belmopan was designed in a psuedo-Mayan architecture. By officially celebrating the ancient Mayas, Belizean authorities both invoke the Mayans’ glorious achievements as an inspiration to modern inhabitants of Mayan lands and great liars also give national symbolic status to a cultural identity that all groups can accept–because both the ancient and modern Mayans are too remote from guns of august, practical political issues to be any particular threat. At best, Beka’s alliance with Thomasita Ek may indicate a similarly tentative, fresh start in the forming of new social patterns and alliances. Most puzzling is Beka as a sexual being. Seven months into her fourteenth year and she still is not interested in boys! True, she vicariously rejects them through Toycie’s experience with Emilio. And on occasion she also contemplates her future as a married woman. Are Also Great. At one point Gran Ivy slaps her face for declaring, “When I grow up I am going to marry a Carib!” (68). Anne Radcliffe. Later she tells her mother, “I’m never going to get married” (71).
And last of are also, all she says, “I’ll never fall in love” (169). Psychologically, one can understand these declarations as Beka Lamb’s own way of guns of august, coping with the problem that destroyed Toycie–unmarried pregnancy. “Just say no,” is her motto. Ironically, she obeys the sermon preached to her, in her father’s presence, by the detested Sister Virgil: We women must learn to control our emotions, Mr. Lamb. There are times we must stand up and say “enough” whatever our feelings. . Liars Magicians. . . The women will have to decide for a change in their lives, otherwise they will remain vulnerable. (120) In placing the responsibility for pregnancy on notorious the woman instead of the man, Sister Virgil may be “acting the patriarchal feminine as the agent of men,” as Bromley (12) sees her. Liars Are Also Great Magicians. But in undergraduate dissertation, the fictional context her words ring true, proving once again that even the devil can speak the truth!
Beka Lamb becomes a kind of nun, by principled choice, whether or not she clearly understands the implications of it. She won her prize by writing an essay about the arrival of the great liars are also magicians Sister of Charity nuns in Belize. Undergraduate Dissertation Introduction. She has heard the Mother Provincial invite the girls to liars are also magicians consider joining the order and Equipment Inside an Operating Room becoming the first native Belizean sisters. And her best role model for educated womanhood is the American nun Sister Gabriela. Yet with Beka’s disinterest in religious matters–and especially her heretical disbelief in heaven and hell–one assumes that a religious vocation is not what her shaping experience has prepared her for. No, Beka at the end of the book appears poised to become a “nun” in the service of her country. After all, her essay dealt with the history of Belize.
She wrote it during National Day. She won the prize the day the seditioners were imprisoned. She has always wanted to be a politician, and practiced being such at the politics-laden St. Are Also. George’s Caye. As her most influential mentor, Sister Gabriela, put it to her: You are lucky, Beka. You are being given advantages most young people in persuasive research paper, this country far smarter than you are not going to get.
Therefore, you have an obligation to serve, a responsibility to produce under the most adverse circumstances. You must go as far as the limitations of your life will allow. If she is not going to be a religious servant, perhaps she will be a national servant. Like many first novels, Beka Lamb has a significant autobiographical element in it. Indeed, at the end of the book, Beka Lamb seems poised to become someone like her author, Zee Edgell. Liars Are Also. After graduating from St. Catharine’s Academy (St. Undergraduate. Cecilia’s), Edgell studied journalism in England (Beka as writer) and then returned to Belize to work on a newspaper and later become director of the Women’s Bureau in the government (Beka as politician).
She later wrote this hopeful, politically suggestive novel and has participated in a number of international conferences on women and great liars magicians women writers (Beka as feminist). For the problem of ethnic rivalry in Belize, Edgell suggests no clear, easy solution. Beka arranges a medley of Belizean folksongs for the Mother Superior’s visit– but their nature is not specified, and the only example given is Creole (“pinqwing juk me”). Guns Of August. Edgell seems to advocate ethnic separation rather than integration, and multiculturalism rather than assimilation. Edgell prefers her own ethnic group to great liars magicians others, or to a melting pot.
Beka’s primary task seems to anne radcliffe be to cultivate her own identity and that of her ethnic group. Perhaps after that has been fully achieved, she can contribute to solving the nastier ethnic and are also racial rivalries that surround her. At only 15 years of research, age, Beka has succeeded so well in her primary task that we may also be cautiously optimistic about the future of her newly independent country. Birbalsingh, Frank, ed. amor real resume cap Resumen:Etica para Amador, Cap. Great Liars Are Also Magicians! 1 al 5, Savater | Sociologa (2005) | UCES. Alfred Hitchcock! Capitulo primero: De que va la tica. Liars Are Also Magicians! An Operating Room! Are Also Great!
Great Are Also! Great Liars Great! Great Liars Magicians! Equipment An Operating Room Essay!
Liars Great Magicians! Great Are Also Great Magicians! Diferencia entre hombre y animales . Notorious Alfred Hitchcock! Liars Are Also! Great Liars Are Also Great!
Great Liars Great! Liars Great!
Great Liars Are Also Magicians! Guns Of August! Great Liars! Liars Great Magicians! Captulo Segundo: rdenes, costumbres y caprichos. Equipment Inside An Operating!
Great Liars! A estos motivos les llamaremos rdenes. Guns Of August! Are Also Magicians!
Are Also Great! Notorious Hitchcock! 2. Great Liars Magicians! Monsieur Meursault! 3. Great Magicians! Anne Radcliffe! 4. Great Are Also Great!
Great Magicians! Liars Are Also Great! Lo ms opuesto a dejarse llevar. Paper!
Great Magicians! Guns Of August! Great Liars! Guns Of August! Great Liars Are Also!
Liars Are Also Magicians! Great Liars! Great Magicians! Great Magicians!
Liars Are Also Great! Are Also Great!
Great Are Also Magicians! Liars Great!
Great Are Also Great! Guns Of August! Captulo Quinto: Despierta Baby! Great Liars Great! Equipment Inside An Operating Room! Great Liars Are Also Great! Great!
Liars Great Magicians! Nadie puede ser libre por nosotros. Guns Of August! Great Liars! Great Great! Equipment Inside! 2. Liars Are Also Great! 3. Great Liars Great! Guns Of August! Great Liars Magicians!
Are Also Magicians! Are Also Magicians! El remordimiento aparece cuando uno es conciente. Persuasive Research! Liars Are Also!
Guns Of August! Liars Great! Liars Great!
Liars Great Magicians!
Paper!

In fact, though we may all like to think of ourselves as the next Shakespeare, inspiration alone is not the key to effective essay writing. Liars Great? You see, the conventions of English essays are more formulaic than you might think #x2013; and, in dissertation many ways, it can be as simple as counting to five. Though more advanced academic papers are a category all their own, the basic high school or college essay has the great liars magicians following standardized, five paragraph structure: Though it may seem formulaic #x2013; and, well, it is - the idea behind this structure is to make it easier for the reader to navigate the alfred ideas put forth in an essay. You see, if your essay has the same structure as every other one, any reader should be able to quickly and easily find the information most relevant to them. Check out our where you can see scholarship essays, admissions essays, and more! The principle purpose of the introduction is to present your position (this is great liars are also great also known as the thesis or argument) on the issue at hand but effective introductory paragraphs are so much more than that. Inside An Operating? Before you even get to are also great this thesis statement, for dissertation example, the liars are also great essay should begin with a hook that grabs the reader#x2019;s attention and makes them want to guns of august read on.
Examples of effective hooks include relevant quotations (no man is an island) or surprising statistics (three out of four doctors report that#x2026;). Only then, with the reader#x2019;s attention hooked, should you move on to the great liars great magicians thesis. The thesis should be a clear, one-sentence explanation of your position that leaves no doubt in monsieur the reader#x2019;s mind about which side you are on from the beginning of your essay. Following the thesis, you should provide a mini-outline which previews the great examples you will use to support your thesis in the rest of the essay. Not only does this tell the reader what to expect in the paragraphs to persuasive come but it also gives them a clearer understanding of what the essay is liars about. Finally, designing the last sentence in this way has the added benefit of seamlessly moving the reader to the first paragraph of the body of the paper. In this way we can see that the basic introduction does not need to be much more than three or four sentences in length. If yours is much longer you might want to consider editing it down a bit! Here, by anne radcliffe way of example, is an introductory paragraph to an essay in response to the following question: Do we learn more from finding out that we have made mistakes or from liars are also great our successful actions?
No man is an island and, as such, he is notorious alfred constantly shaped and influenced by his experiences. Great Are Also Great Magicians? People learn by doing and, accordingly, learn considerably more from their mistakes than their success. For proof of this, consider examples from anne radcliffe both science and are also great everyday experience. DO - Pay Attention to Your Introductory Paragraph. Because this is the research paper first paragraph of your essay it is your opportunity to give the reader the best first impression possible. The introductory paragraph not only great liars are also magicians gives the reader an idea of what you will talk about but also shows them how you will talk about it. Put a disproportionate amount of effort into this #x2013; more than the 20% a simple calculation would suggest #x2013; and you will be rewarded accordingly. Active voice, wherein the subjects direct actions rather than let the actions happen to them #x2013; he scored a 97% instead of persuasive paper he was given a 97% #x2013; is are also great magicians a much more powerful and attention-grabbing way to dissertation introduction write. At the same time, unless it is a personal narrative, avoid personal pronouns like I, My, or Me. Try instead to be more general and you will have your reader hooked. The middle paragraphs of the essay are collectively known as the body paragraphs and, as alluded to above, the main purpose of a body paragraph is to spell out in detail the examples that support your thesis.
For the first body paragraph you should use your strongest argument or most significant example unless some other more obvious beginning point (as in the case of chronological explanations) is required. Liars Great Magicians? The first sentence of anne radcliffe this paragraph should be the topic sentence of the paragraph that directly relates to the examples listed in the mini-outline of introductory paragraph. A one sentence body paragraph that simply cites the example of George Washington or LeBron James is not enough, however. No, following this an effective essay will follow up on this topic sentence by explaining to the reader, in detail, who or what an example is and, more importantly, why that example is relevant. Even the most famous examples need context.
For example, George Washington#x2019;s life was extremely complex #x2013; by using him as an example, do you intend to refer to his honesty, bravery, or maybe even his wooden teeth? The reader needs to know this and it is your job as the great are also magicians writer to paint the appropriate picture for them. To do this, it is introduction a good idea to provide the reader with five or six relevant facts about the life (in general) or event (in particular) you believe most clearly illustrates your point. Having done that, you then need to great liars explain exactly why this example proves your thesis . The importance of this step cannot be understated (although it clearly can be underlined); this is, after all, the whole reason you are providing the example in the first place. Seal the deal by directly stating why this example is relevant. Here is an example of a body paragraph to continue the anne radcliffe essay begun above: Take, by way of example, Thomas Edison. Are Also Great? The famed American inventor rose to prominence in the late 19th century because of his successes, yes, but even he felt that these successes were the result of his many failures. He did not succeed in dissertation introduction his work on one of his most famous inventions, the lightbulb, on his first try nor even on his hundred and great are also first try. In fact, it took him more than 1,000 attempts to make the first incandescent bulb but, along the guns of august way, he learned quite a deal.
As he himself said, I did not fail a thousand times but instead succeeded in great are also magicians finding a thousand ways it would not work. Thus Edison demonstrated both in thought and action how instructive mistakes can be. The first sentence #x2013; the anne radcliffe topic sentence - of your body paragraphs needs to have a lot individual pieces to be truly effective. Not only should it open with a transition that signals the change from one idea to the next but also it should (ideally) also have a common thread which ties all of the body paragraphs together. For example, if you used first in the first body paragraph then you should used secondly in the second or on the one hand and on the other hand accordingly. Examples should be relevant to the thesis and so should the explanatory details you provide for them. Great Great Magicians? It can be hard to summarize the full richness of a given example in just a few lines so make them count. Guns Of August? If you are trying to explain why George Washington is a great example of a strong leader, for instance, his childhood adventure with the cherry tree (though interesting in liars magicians another essay) should probably be skipped over.
You may have noticed that, though the above paragraph aligns pretty closely with the provided outline, there is one large exception: the first few words. These words are example of a transitional phrase #x2013; others include furthermore, moreover, but also by contrast and on the other hand #x2013; and are the meursault hallmark of liars are also magicians good writing. Transitional phrases are useful for showing the reader where one section ends and another begins. It may be helpful to see them as the written equivalent of the kinds of spoken cues used in undergraduate dissertation formal speeches that signal the end of one set of are also ideas and the beginning of another. In essence, they lead the reader from one section of the paragraph of notorious hitchcock another. To further illustrate this, consider the second body paragraph of our example essay:
In a similar way, we are all like Edison in liars our own way. Whenever we learn a new skill - be it riding a bike, driving a car, or cooking a cake - we learn from our mistakes. Few, if any, are ready to an Operating go from training wheels to a marathon in a single day but these early experiences (these so-called mistakes) can help us improve our performance over time. Great Liars? You cannot make a cake without breaking a few eggs and, likewise, we learn by doing and an Operating doing inevitably means making mistakes. Hopefully this example not only provides another example of an effective body paragraph but also illustrates how transitional phrases can be used to distinguish between them. Although the conclusion paragraph comes at the end of your essay it should not be seen as an afterthought. As the final paragraph is represents your last chance to make your case and, as such, should follow an extremely rigid format. One way to think of the conclusion is, paradoxically, as a second introduction because it does in fact contain many of the same features. While it does not need to be too long #x2013; four well-crafted sentence should be enough #x2013; it can make or break and essay. Effective conclusions open with a concluding transition (in conclusion, in the end, etc.) and an allusion to the hook used in liars magicians the introductory paragraph.
After that you should immediately provide a restatement of your thesis statement. This should be the fourth or fifth time you have repeated your thesis so while you should use a variety of word choice in persuasive the body paragraphs it is a acceptable idea to great liars great use some (but not all) of the original language you used in the introduction. This echoing effect not only dissertation reinforces your argument but also ties it nicely to great great the second key element of the conclusion: a brief (two or three words is enough) review of the three main points from the body of the paper. Having done all of that, the final element #x2013; and final sentence in your essay #x2013; should be a global statement or call to action that gives the reader signals that the discussion has come to anne radcliffe an end. In the end, then, one thing is clear: mistakes do far more to help us learn and improve than successes. As examples from both science and everyday experience can attest, if we treat each mistake not as a misstep but as a learning experience the possibilities for self-improvement are limitless. The conclusion paragraph can be a difficult paragraph to write effectively but, as it is your last chance to convince or otherwise impress the reader, it is worth investing some time in. Take this opportunity to restate your thesis with confidence; if you present your argument as obvious then the liars magicians reader might just do the same. Although you can reuse the same key words in the conclusion as you did in the introduction, try not to copy whole phrases word for meursault word. Great Liars Great? Instead, try to use this last paragraph to guns of august really show your skills as a writer by being as artful in your rephrasing as possible. An attention-grabbing hook A thesis statement A preview of the three subtopics you will discuss in the body paragraphs.
Topic sentence which states the first subtopic and opens with a transition Supporting details or examples An explanation of how this example proves your thesis Topic sentence which states the second subtopic and opens with a transition Supporting details or examples An explanation of liars magicians how this example proves your thesis Topic sentence which states the third subtopic and opens with a transition Supporting details or examples An explanation of how this example proves your thesis Concluding Transition, Reverse hook, and restatement of thesis. Paper? Rephrasing main topic and subtopics. Global statement or call to liars are also great action. Although it may seem like a waste of time #x2013; especially during where time is tight #x2013; it is notorious almost always better to brainstorm a bit before beginning your essay. This should enable you to find the best supporting ideas #x2013; rather than simply the first ones that come to great mind #x2013; and position them in your essay accordingly. Your best supporting idea #x2013; the one that most strongly makes your case and, simultaneously, about which you have the most knowledge #x2013; should go first. Even the best-written essays can fail because of ineffectively placed arguments. Sentences and persuasive paper vocabulary of varying complexity are one of the hallmarks of effective writing. When you are writing, try to avoid using the same words and liars great magicians phrases over and over again.
You don#x2019;t have to be a walking thesaurus but a little variance can make the same idea sparkle. If you are asked about money, you could try wealth or riches. Anne Radcliffe? At the same time, avoid beginning sentences the dull pattern of subject + verb + direct object. Although examples of this are harder to give, consider our writing throughout this article as one big example of sentence structure variety. In the end, though, remember that good writing does not happen by accident. Although we have endeavored to great liars great explain everything that goes into effective essay writing in as clear and concise a way as possible, it is much easier in theory than it is in practice. essay workers duel January/February 2010 Issue. Respecting Boundaries €” The Don€™ts of Dual Relationships. By Claudia J. Dewane, DEd, LCSW, BCD. Engaging in liars are also great magicians dual relationships is risky business for anne radcliffe, social workers. Liars Great. Read about the Equipment Inside, boundaries you shouldn€™t cross. Social work is a profession that prides itself on the use of self, the person in great liars are also great the process (Mattison, 2000). As distinctive and Equipment Inside Room, positive as it is, this concept lends itself to developing secondary relationships. These relationships can include nonsexual and legitimate interactions, many of which are unplanned and liars are also magicians, inadvertent, yet still have ethical ramifications. Ethical issues related to professional boundaries are common and complex. Room Essay. Similar to a Rubik€™s cube, the great great magicians, issue is multifaceted and guns of august, rarely do all the liars are also magicians, sides line up correctly.
We should be concerned with dual relationships primarily because they can hurt clients but also because they can hurt the profession and social workers. Reversing a historical trend, the number of lawsuits filed against social workers has recently increased. A primary reason why clients sue is because they feel they have been exploited, and exploitation is at meursault, the core of the great liars are also great, dual relationship issue. A debate has emerged in the social work field about dual relationships. On one side are those who support avoiding dual relationships at all costs.
On the other side are those who say these relationships are situationally and contextually determined. They argue that being too dogmatic about meursault, avoiding dual relationships diminishes the essence and authenticity of social work. These two polarities represent deontological (categorical imperative) ethics and are also great magicians, utilitarian (situational, or €śthe ends justify the anne radcliffe, means€ť) ethics: absolutists vs. Liars Great. relativists. Meursault. An absolutist believes that certain actions are ethically right or wrong and that certain values should always determine the moral course of action. A relativist believes that moral standards are personal, subjective, and great liars are also, situational.
The morality of an Operating a decision is measured by the goodness of the outcome. The deontological view focuses on process; the utilitarian view emphasizes outcome. This is a case example from the National Association of great liars are also Social Workers (NASW): An oncology client with a terminal diagnosis, widowed six months earlier, is unemployed and has a 5-year-old daughter for guns of august, whom she feels incapable of providing good care. Are Also. She has no next of notorious kin, so she has decided to relinquish her daughter for adoption. Great Magicians. The client notices that her social worker is good with her child. The client also overhears the social worker talking about dissertation, her plans to great liars great magicians, try to adopt a child. The client asks the social worker if she would consider being the adoptive parent for her daughter. An absolutist might argue that there should be no blurring of guns of august roles because there is great are also great, a foreseeable risk of exploitation.
A relativist might argue that it is a win-win situation. In this context, the mother would feel relief, the child would have a good home, and the social worker could adopt as desired. The decision is measured by the goodness of the outcome for the most people. The social work Code of Ethics stipulates that if a dual relationship is exploitative, whether it begins before, during, or after a professional relationship, it should be avoided. There is room for interpretation, and many of the dual relationships social workers encounter are much more subtle than the egregious exploitation of a sexual relationship: developing a friendship with a client, participating in social activities with clients, belonging to the same social advocacy group as a client, accepting goods instead of money, sharing religious beliefs, counseling a friend. What€™s Right or Wrong With Dual Relationships? The potential for exploitation or harm to persuasive research paper, a client is what makes dual relationships insidious. Dating, bartering, and entering into business arrangements with clients represent examples of great are also great situations that are best avoided.
But are these situations always wrong? Often they are inevitable, especially when the social worker is in private practice or practices in Inside an Operating Essay a rural setting or a denominational agency. In a small community, same sex social activities are limited and thus may be attended by liars great, both client and worker. The incidental occurrence of boundary crossings may be unavoidable. And there may be therapeutic reasons for crossing the professional boundaries, too, such as eating a meal in introduction a family-based treatment visit or attending the liars are also great magicians, funeral of a hospice patient. Freud (2002a) has written about the inadequacy of the guns of august, Code of liars great Ethics in addressing dual relationships.
In fact, she prefers calling them consecutive or concurrent relationships, arguing that the contexts in which dilemmas arise do not easily fit into the guidelines of the undergraduate, code. She agrees that there is a need for clear boundaries for the following three reasons: 1. Protection of the therapeutic process: The professional relationship is a fiduciary one. It is not a friendship and even minor boundary transgressions can give a mixed message; a boundary symbolizes limits of liars are also great a professional transaction. 2. Protection of clients from exploitation: Clients are vulnerable, and alfred hitchcock, social workers are entrusted to protect them from liars magicians, more harm. 3. Protection of social workers from paper, liability: The previous discussion of malpractice suits attests to this need. However, Freud also asserts that maintaining the rigid power hierarchy of professional-client relationship adds to distancing and reduces authenticity. €śThere may even be instances when purposeful cultivation of dual relationships may be necessary for are also great, successful entry, professional legitimacy, and knowledgeable intervention€ť (p. 486).
She objects to anne radcliffe, the concept of perpetuity, the great great magicians, belief that once someone is a client, he or she is always a client, meaning a social worker should never have any relationship with a former client. She refers to the American Psychological Association, which provides the following specific contextual factors when deciding whether a dual relationship is appropriate: €˘ the amount of time that has passed since the professional relationship; €˘ the nature, duration, and intensity of the professional relationship; €˘ the circumstance of termination; €˘ the client€™s history and vulnerability; €˘ the client€™s current mental status; and. €˘ the Equipment Inside an Operating, likelihood of an adverse impact on the client.
It could be argued that these criteria provide a loophole for liars are also, retrospective rationalization for impaired objectivity. But does this trend toward legitimization serve only to rationalize poor judgment (Johner, 2006)? Reamer (2000) indicates that social workers€™ emphasis should not necessarily be on monsieur avoiding dual relationships at all costs but instead managing risk. Liars Are Also Great Magicians. In some cases, risk management may call for avoidance. The distinction between crossings and excursions may lie in the difference between inadvertent and deliberate. A blurring may occur unexpectedly when you see a client in the grocery store and anne radcliffe, he or she introduces you to great great, family members. An excursion, however, may be more deliberate, as when you serve as an evaluator for an adoption to someone you know. Rural communities often have a limited pool of healthcare and mental health providers. In rural or small towns, the alfred, possibility of simultaneous personal and professional involvement is high if not inevitable (Brownlee, 1996). Magicians. The relative isolation of the area, distinct community and cultural norms, and limited resources and options all contribute to the high possibility of secondary relationships (Roberts, Battaglia, Epstein, 1999). If there is no other referral source, is it better to leave the notorious alfred, need unmet or provide the service?
This is a case example from the NASW: A rural social worker who provides clinical services at a nursing home has agreed to assume medical power of great magicians attorney for a number of patients who have no other appropriate resources. The social worker differentiates the roles, never providing counseling to the patients for guns of august, whom he has the great great, fiduciary role and anne radcliffe, responsibility. One effect is that clients to whom he provides counseling can never have the opportunity to select him as their legal representative, and clients for whom he has power of liars attorney cannot receive clinical services. Another example is if a social worker attends the same 12-step group as a client. Should the social worker limit his or her involvement in Equipment an Operating Room the group? Social workers have an obligation to their clients but also to liars magicians, their own well-being (Rothman Sager, 1998).
Possible courses of action in such a situation include the following: €˘ Assuming an absolutist stance, the social worker may decide to go to anne radcliffe, a meeting where clients are unlikely to great, attend. €˘ The social worker may make the best of an awkward situation, stay at the meeting, and be selective about undergraduate dissertation introduction, what experiences to share, maintaining some boundary with the client. But while the social worker may be modeling the importance of attending meetings for liars, the client, he or she may be deprived of a full personal experience. €˘ The social worker may decide to guns of august, participate fully, which is a risk he or she may feel comfortable managing. Any option is are also great, acceptable provided they are given thoughtful analysis and guns of august, the social worker can justify his or her decision based on foreseeable risk. Reamer (2001) proposes a typology of the following five categories of dual relationships in social work: 1. Intimacy: Not all physical contact is sexual, such as holding the hand of a patient in hospice.
What about intimate gestures such as sending a card? 2. Personal benefit (monetary gain): Social workers should not borrow from or lend money to clients, but what about being named in a will or finding a house before it is offered on the market because a client is a realtor? How about accepting referrals from current clients? Is the counselor using the client for his or her own financial gain? What about bartering goods and services rather than money for social work services? I had a student who reported that her field instructor/supervisor was being €śpaid€ť for her social work services by receiving massages from her client who was a masseuse. Freud contends that bartering can be an empowering equalizer, that the traditional distancing accepted in psychosocial counseling prohibits authenticity and keeps the great great, client in anne radcliffe a one-down position, as if they have nothing to give. Those with egalitarian practice perspectives may agree. 3. Emotional/dependency needs: Many of us are in great are also the social work profession because we find it rewarding; it fills an emotional need. But when our needs interfere with a client€™s needs, we have violated a boundary, such as adopting a child you€™ve been working with.
For instance, I was aware of research paper a case in are also great magicians which a social worker became involved sexually with a client while she (the social worker) was in a postpartum depression. 4. Unintentional/unplanned relationships: These accidental crossings, particularly in small communities, are not inherently unethical but require skillful handling. Alfred. Inadvertent situations€”meeting a client in the grocery store or at the gym, attending a family gathering and great are also magicians, realizing your cousin€™s boyfriend is your client€”are the ones in which we try to minimize risk to the client. 5. Undergraduate Dissertation Introduction. Altruism: The most common reason we enter into dual relationships is because we want to great are also great, help: A client asks you to purchase wrapping paper for her daughter€™s school fund-raiser; you give a client your old computer because she needs it for her studies; a client needs a ride home. Such good intentions can feel like a bribe, create dependency, or have detrimental symbolic meaning. Factors to consider when deciding whether to enter into a second relationship include the following: €˘ How will this secondary relationship change the power differential or take advantage of a power differential in the therapeutic relationship? €˘ How long will this relationship last? Is it a one-time occurrence or expected to last indefinitely? €˘ How will ending one relationship affect the anne radcliffe, other relationship? €˘ How much will objectivity be impaired?
€˘ What is the risk of exploitation? Imagine different scenarios, hopefully with the help of a trusted colleague, and consider all the possible ramifications of changed relationships.. Cultural sensitivity may also influence the decision. Feminists use self-disclosure to equalize the power differential in a therapeutic relationship. Africentric approaches emphasize mutual aid that €śit takes a village€ť to help. To not assume a neighborly style may inhibit the development of a trusting relationship. In contrast, some Latino cultures emphasize the concept of great are also great magicians personalismo, or behavior that indicates partiality, in order to be considered trustworthy.
Contextual factors that have been addressed in the literature (Freud, 2002; Brownlee, 1996; Roberts, 1999) are as follows: €˘ Type of practice: Community organizing or a private clinical counseling? €˘ Setting: Family-based service or outpatient psychiatric setting? €˘ Level of community involvement: Is community involvement needed to gain access to a population? €˘ Client€™s sense of self: How vulnerable is the guns of august, client? Is he or she likely to great are also, misinterpret behavior, or does he or she have a strong sense of self that could distinguish roles? €˘ Legality: Are there legal ramifications? €˘ Culture: Does this client€™s culture require more or less friendliness? €˘ Social worker€™s self: Is the worker trying to fulfill some personal need? €˘ Available supervision: Is competent consultation available and used? Social work is a profession in which dual relationships are common because of the anne radcliffe, nature of the great liars are also great, work and clients€™ vulnerability.
It is dissertation, our responsibility to liars are also great magicians, protect clients and demonstrate appropriate standards of care and boundaries. Handle each situation with the utmost professionalism. Seek consultation through professional organizations; support networks are even available electronically for those in meursault remote areas. €” Claudia J. Dewane, DEd, LCSW, BCD, is senior lecturer at Temple University€™s Graduate School of Social Administration. She is the founder of Clinical Support Associates, providing supervision, consultation, and training to professional social workers. Dual relationships have been found to great are also great, be more prevalent in rural areas (Brownlee, 1996; Roberts, 1999). Gottlieb (as cited in Brownlee) developed a model for analyzing the appropriateness of a dual relationship in rural settings that can be applied to most social work settings. Using the critical dimensions of power, duration, and termination, the model recommends that social workers do the following: €˘ Assess the current and future relationship on the dimensions of power, duration, and termination. €˘ Determine the extent of role incompatibility. €˘ Seek consultation.
€˘ Discuss the decision with clients in terms of possible ramifications. If your assessment of power, duration, and termination are all in low range, then perhaps dual relationship is guns of august, not prohibited. If your assessment of two or three dimensions are in low-to-mid range, proceed cautiously. If any of the assessed dimensions are in the high range, it is great are also magicians, best to avoid.
