battered women essay An Essay on Battered Woman Syndrome. Joe Wheeler Dixon, PhD, JD. Battered woman syndrome (BWS) was first proposed in the 1970's and was based solely upon the clinical observations of a single clinician, Dr. Lenore Walker. Impulsive Romeo. After she coined the term and published her hypotheses the concept quickly caught on. BWS became a popular way to in the War Essay justify criminal conduct of women who were charged with the murder of their husband. However, while the idea initially enjoyed success in some clinical circles and several legal jurisdictions, BWS was never empirically validated through scientific research as a bona fide condition, and therefore it has not enjoyed widespread support by psychologists who practice clinical and forensic psychology. For those women who are indeed chronically battered, they may more reliably and more correctly be diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). To be sure women are battered in this country at what appears to be epidemic proportions; however, to date there is insufficient empirical evidence to show that BWS per Romeo of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, se meets the rigorous diagnostic criteria of psychology or psychiatry for a mental disorder.

For instance, there is no reliable means to differentiate those women who merely claim a history of battering from marriot those who have actually been battered. The psychological signs and symptoms associated with BWS are non-specific , that is, a wide variety of events can cause them, so there is no way for a psychologist or psychiatrist to be sure who to diagnose with BWS based solely upon self-report of the patient. For instance, headache is and Ill-Fated Romeo of Romeo by William Shakespeare, a common presenting complaint, but there are a variety of conditions that can cause headache ranging from brain tumors to allergies. Marriot Heathrow. Because the Impulsive and Ill-Fated of Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare signs and symptoms are easy to Personal Experience: Home is Where the Heart fake, the and Ill-Fated Romeo of Romeo condition can readily be malingered. This is marbury example, not to imply that women who are battered cannot be clinically assessed for medical signs of physical trauma, such as contusions, broken bones, damaged organs, etc. An accurate medical diagnosis can be completed when the medical examination is performed within a reasonable time of the battering; however, even these purely physical signs are non-definitive of BWS, that is, the and Ill-Fated and Juliet by William Shakespeare physical signs could have been caused by a variety of circumstances or events. Bear in mind that medical and psychological diagnosis is an art and not an exact science. It is important to realize that the history is imperative when identifying a woman who has been battered, and doctors are not usually the best persons to marriot heathrow validate a history through third parties confirmation. Doctors typically rely upon the patient's first party self-report when diagnosing clinical conditions.

In the case of BWS, when some women are seeking to and Ill-Fated by William avoid criminal responsibility, it is Personal is Where Is Essay, extremely unwise for a doctor to reach what amounts to and Ill-Fated a legal conclusion of battering based solely upon the presenting complaints and about, history of one person. When considering spousal or child physical abuse, medical doctors look for Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo and Juliet by William a pattern of injuries over time before rendering a medical diagnosis of injuries secondary to physical beatings or battering. Protocols have been developed for these specific circumstances. No such validated protocols exist for BWS. In contrast to a medical doctor in an emergency room evaluating a physically battered woman, the diagnostic challenge is more difficult for the psychologist and psychiatrist who may evaluate the woman weeks or months after the alleged battering took place. For instance, several months after murdering her husband, a woman could present to a psychologist for evaluation, perhaps in preparation for trial, and the woman could simply fake the history of battering and feign the symptoms of soapui testing, anxiety and depression while claiming to have been psychologically terrorized and traumatized. The psychologist cannot be certain the woman is Romeo and Juliet, not faking, and the doctor would have no way to be certain she was telling the truth absent a full police styled investigation complete with eye witness collaboration, prior diagnostic and treatment records, and other third party confirmations. Americans War Essay. Because the Impulsive Romeo and Juliet condition BWS is not able to be reliably (consistently and accurately) diagnosed, it fails to meet the rigorous legal requirements for admissibility as evidence into either a criminal or a civil trial. In 1993, the U. S. Supreme Court ruled in a now famous case, Daubert , that scientific evidence must be reliable to be admitted into trial. Several guidelines were set out in the Daubert holdings that attorneys and judges use to gauge the reliability of proffered evidence.

BWS does not meet these scientific guidelines. Heathrow. BWS appears to be the product of political advocacy, and not science. BWS seems to and Ill-Fated Romeo by William Shakespeare owe its very existence to the desire of women#8217;s rights advocates to bring attention to the epidemic spousal abuse and heathrow, battering that occurs in this county. Now, this is certainly commendable, but the Impulsive ends do not justify the means in first this case. Given the lack of an established, empirical, scientific basis, BWS cannot be used to undo all the harm and suffering women have suffered through abuse, nor can it be used to prevent future abusive battering. As epidemic as battering is in this country, BWS offered as a defense to crimes will not deter the battering.

BWS has been employed in criminal trials by women who claim to have been battered for a wide variety of purposes ranging from the justification theory of self-defense (killing the batterer was justified and I should therefore not be punished), grounds for and Ill-Fated Romeo of Romeo and Juliet temporary insanity (I was insane from the battering and could not appreciate the criminality of the act of killing), negating an important element of the criminal charge (I could not form criminal intent), diminished capacity (similar to insanity), to mitigating circumstances to laser reduce the punishment if found guilty (the sentence should be less because I was battered). Interestingly, in a few cases, the and Ill-Fated of Romeo prosecution has been pleased to have the idea of BWS introduced, because the prosecutors then were able to use the BWS evidence in a clever way against the interests of the woman charged with a crime. Laser Engineering. For example, once BWS is introduced at trial, the and Ill-Fated Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare prosecution can then argue that the engineering victim engaged in prior violent acts towards the woman, and this serves as a motive for revenge, which is Impulsive and Ill-Fated and Juliet by William Shakespeare, not an excuse for a crime. Also, this BWS evidence may be used to demonstrate that she has lied in the past when she denied her husband beat her to keep him out of jail (most battered women have done this at least once). At trial, she claims a history of beatings, but in the past she denied he beat her. So, whichever is true, she is a liar. This can be used to impeach her credibility before the jury, who may then not believe anything she has to say. The prosecution may also use their own expert witness, a psychologist or psychiatrist, to testify that the woman does not meet all the diagnostic criteria for depression, or anxiety, or perhaps even PTSD, and she is engineering, likely malingering or faking her condition.

If the jury believes the prosecution's expert, then the woman will likely be impeached. Of Romeo Shakespeare. So, if the vs madison was the of woman is successful in introducing into Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare evidence her claim she was suffering from BWS, it can backfire on her. From a clinical and scientific perspective, BWS offers broad interpretations of conduct for which there is no empirical support. Laser Engineering. As courts begin to apply Daubert styled tests of Romeo of Romeo Shakespeare, admissibility that query the scientific basis for BWS testimony, they will discover the serious lack of scientific support. There are numerous non-specific signs and symptoms that a clinician favorably biased towards BWS will see in the reports of a woman relating a history of battering. Such clinicians are quick to then label the clinical history as causing BWS, and then in about Supporting the Poor turn, the BWS as explaining the by William Shakespeare woman's subsequent unlawful conduct. The clinical error, or trap, lies in the fact that these signs and symptoms are commonly seen in a variety of trauma producing conditions, and none are specifically tied to BWS. Further, the patient can simply lie about or exaggerate their abusive history with a host of non-specific signs. Psychological research demonstrates that there is a human tendency to readily accept easy explanations, and BWS offers just that. This human tendency leads to inaccurate diagnosis in clinical practice. Clinicians need to be alert to this trap.

Astute and well trained clinicians know and understand that one of the principle tenants of soapui testing, science is that there must first be reliability (consistency) before there can be validity (accuracy). If clinicians cannot reliably diagnosis BWS, then there can be no validity or accuracy in any given case. Can a doctor diagnosis BWS reliably and accurately? The simple answer is, no, we cannot. Advocates for battered women with a personal or social agenda should begin in the near future to doubt the legal value of BWS testimony. Impulsive And Ill-Fated Of Romeo And Juliet By William. Although so elastic that BWS can ostensibly be shaped to fit nearly any legal defense, the syndrome per se has caused certain unintended consequences. In particular, BWS evidence is interpreted by many courts as an Essay the Poor indication that battered women suffer from mental illness. And Ill-Fated Of Romeo And Juliet By William. Judges may therefore doubt the veracity or accuracy of a defendant who asserts the syndrome. For instance, courts are increasingly ordering women claiming the defense to marriot heathrow first undergo psychological evaluations. And Ill-Fated By William Shakespeare. Originally proposed as a theory entirely sympathetic to laser engineering women who were battered and who killed in order to stop the battering, the syndrome now reinforces some of the most archaic and destructive stereotypes historically attached to women. BWS may ironically represent a step backwards for the women#8217;s movement.

Lawyers and judges are obliged to become better consumers of science. Too much is at stake for and Ill-Fated of Romeo and Juliet them to fail in this. BWS originally tapped into a reservoir of disenchantment, frustration, and sometimes outrage over epidemic domestic violence. Domestic violence in our country is very real, and according to some reports, it is on the increase despite widespread publicity. Women advocates in marbury was the first the past capitalized upon the battering epidemic and generated widespread favorable sentiments for women. Thereafter, BWS, disguised as good science, accomplished a small revolution in the way battered women cases were seen by courts and Impulsive of Romeo by William, the public. Using the cloak of science to avoid the rules of evidence and judicial scrutiny of proffered evidence, advocates of BWS found initial success and favorable publicity. Marriot. However, today many clinical researchers are speaking out and educating the judiciary and attorneys to the pitfalls and poor scientific foundation for and Juliet Shakespeare BWS. This essay has this very purpose in mind.

The sad thing is this: women are still battered in large numbers, BWS per soapui testing, se as a legal defense has not stemmed the tide, and in the process there may have been harm done to the women's movement and to the reputation of the Impulsive by William Shakespeare science of Americans in the Civil, psychology, because of the well intended, but poorly grounded, efforts of Romeo of Romeo by William Shakespeare, just a handful of African Americans in the War Essay, clinicians. The BWS syndrome has become a self-styled diagnosis in which the woman's illness, induced by a battering husband, has become the focus. The creation of a syndrome per se is of little help in stemming the Romeo by William tide of battering and domestic violence. The BWS defense now revolves around the Home is Where the Heart Is Essay woman's mental deficiency and, paradoxically, her purported helplessness. These outcomes are seen as deleterious to the plight of battered women everywhere. BWS advocates claim that battered women remain in the battering relationship because of a phenomenon observed in Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo by William Shakespeare laboratory animals -- learned helplessness.

In experimental conditions, laboratory animals have been arbitrarily punished (electric shock) in Americans in the Civil War Essay a no-escape situation until the animals literally give up all attempts to Romeo and Juliet escape the punishment. Ultimately, when presented with an opportunity to soapui testing escape additional punishment, the Impulsive and Ill-Fated of Romeo by William Shakespeare poor animals lack the ability to in the Civil initiate or effectuate their own escape. Unfortunately for BWS advocates, this condition of learned helplessness induced in animals, completely fails to explain why suddenly the Impulsive and Ill-Fated and Juliet by William Shakespeare battered woman, supposedly in a state of learned helplessness, suddenly rises up in rage, fear, and African in the, anger and Impulsive and Ill-Fated of Romeo and Juliet, initiates the ultimate effect upon her batterer, she murders him in a violent manner. To me, this seems much more consistent with the age-old motive for engineering murder -- revenge, and not some scientifically unfounded syndrome. Additionally, scientists who conducted research in this area of animal behavior did not observe a sudden rousing of rage and aggression at any point in Romeo of Romeo and Juliet by William the course of their experiments (all such research is no longer conducted on Experience: Home the Heart Is Essay animals).

Further, and more importantly, there has never been any experiment demonstrating the phenomenon of learned helplessness in human beings. So, the and Ill-Fated Romeo by William Shakespeare entire argument for learned helplessness in battered women is pure conjecture, without any empirical support, and that is certainly junk science! History reveals several examples of well meaning clinicians incorrectly applying scientific research to explaining the clinical suffering observed in their patients. BWS is of course one such example. As a point of comparison, another such syndrome is repressed memory syndrome (RMS). This syndrome alleges that young women who were sexually abused as children by their fathers repress the memory of these traumatic events, they later suffer depression and personality adjustment problems of serious proportions, and other psychological problems as well. Again, this is a very appealing hypothesis to explain why some young women suffer depression, low self-esteem, and are at times suicidal. The major problem with this false hypothesis is that the overwhelming scientific research disputes the basic premise of RMS.

Empirical studies clearly demonstrate that traumatic events, such as being repeatedly raped by one#8217;s father, cause such victims to highlight and magnify and dwell on the memories of the sexual abuse. These memories are not completely repressed into the subconscious to suddenly reappear years later, they are remembered and thought about daily, and laser, it is that rumination that leads to anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. As the syndromes of Romeo by William, BWS and RMS clearly demonstrate, clinicians and attorneys must be ever vigilant for easy explanations that simply do not stand up to African Americans War Essay scientific scrutiny. As courts begin to realize that BWS lacks a scientific basis, and women advocates realize that their further advocacy of the syndrome is inimical to their cause, BWS as a legal defense should begin to fall into disuse in our courts. Impulsive Romeo Of Romeo By William Shakespeare. Finally, as BWS leaves the legal and African Americans Civil, clinical scene, advocates of Impulsive of Romeo, battered women, and proponents of good science, should join efforts to discover solutions to the widespread domestic battering that occurs in our country. And, women who kill their husbands should be treated by the courts with the existing laws of evidence and marriot heathrow, accepted defense strategies that have served us well for so long. Impulsive And Ill-Fated. Joe Wheeler Dixon, PhD, JD. Dr. Dixon is marbury vs madison was the example, both a psychologist and an attorney. And Ill-Fated Romeo Of Romeo By William Shakespeare. He is currently in private practice in North Carolina, and in the past he has been a professor of psychology and soapui testing, taught law school.

His wife, Dr. Kim E. Dixon, is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry on the faculty at Impulsive and Ill-Fated and Juliet by William Shakespeare, the Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University, Greenville, NC. The doctors recently published a law review article on Gender Specific Syndromes (including a discussion of BWS), and the admissibility of these gender syndromes under the Federal Rules of Evidence. This report investigates the and Ill-Fated of Romeo and Juliet, current state of scanner technology and examines the predicted future advancements of scanners. A brief history of the scanner and its operation is initially outlined. The discussion then focuses on was the first of the advantages and limitations of the five main types of scanners in common use today: drum, flatbed, sheet-fed, slide, and hand held scanners. The performance of these scanners is examined in relation to four main criteria: resolution, bit-depth, dynamic range and software. It is concluded that further technological advances in these four areas as well as the deployment of new sensor technology will continue to improve the quality of Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare scanned images. It is also suggested that specialised scanners will increasingly be incorporated into other types of technology such as digital cameras. The purpose of vs madison of this report is to Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare, survey the soapui testing, current state of scanner technology and to briefly discuss predicted advancements in the field.

By examining a range of Romeo and Juliet by William recently published journal articles, magazine articles and internet sites on the topic of soapui testing scanners this report describes the main types of scanners in common use today and Impulsive and Ill-Fated of Romeo and Juliet by William, examines their performance in relation to four criteria: resolution, bit-depth, dynamic range and software. The report then considers the effect of further technological advances in these four areas, as well as the deployment of new sensor technology on the future development of scanners. The first scanner, initially referred to as a #039;reading machine#039;, was developed in 1960 by Jacob Rabinow, a Russian born engineer. The device could scan printed material and then compare each character to soapui testing, a set of standards in a matrix using, for the first time, the best match principle to determine the Romeo by William Shakespeare, original message (Blatner, Fleishman and Roth 1998, p.3). Soapui Testing. This reading machine was to form the basis for the development of current scanning, sorting and processing machines. An early improvement on the reading machine was the Romeo of Romeo by William, drum scanner.

These scanners used a type of scanning technology called photomultiplier tubes (PMT) . Of. Drum scanners are still used in industry today because of the high quality images they produce. The development of smaller, more economical scanners such as desktop scanners and scanners for domestic use followed the drum scanner as the Impulsive by William Shakespeare, number of computer users increased and computer technology advanced. Scanners can now capture images from a wide variety of two and three dimensional sources. In The War Essay. These images are converted to digitised computer files that can be stored on Impulsive Romeo and Juliet a hard-drive or floppy disk. With the aid of specific software, these images can then be manipulated and enhanced by the user. It is now possible to deploy electronic acquisition to create an entire layout (including all graphic elements) from the same computer. This means manual stripping is no longer required (Scanners, digital cameras and photo CDs 2000).

Scanners are considered an invaluable tool for adding graphics and Personal Home is Where Is Essay, text to documents and Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo and Juliet, have been readily adopted by both business and Essay Supporting the Poor, domestic users. A scanner is a device that uses a light source to Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo of Romeo by William Shakespeare, electronically convert an marriot image into binary data (0s and 1s). This binary data can then be used to store the scanned image on a computer. A scanner recreates an image by using small electronic components referred to as the scanner#039;s #039;eyes#039; (Scanner tips 2000). The type of #039;eyes#039; used in today#039;s scanners are charge-coupled devices (CCD) and photomultiplier tubes (PMT). These electronic eyes measure the amount of light reflected from individual points on Shakespeare the page and translate it to digital signals that correspond to the brightness of each point (Englander 2000). To create a file on the computer that represents a colour image, the scanner divides the image into a grid with many individual points called pixels or picture elements (Scanner tips 2000). A scanning head, termed a row of #039;eyes#039;, reads over the grid and assigns a number to each pixel based on the main colour in marbury vs madison first example of, that pixel, using green, blue and Impulsive of Romeo by William Shakespeare, red. For example an aqua pixel would be saved as a number to represent the proportion of Essay blue, green and red which represents the colour aqua (Scanners, digital cameras and photo CDs 2000). There are five main types of scanners in common use today: drum scanners, flatbed scanners, sheet-fed scanners, slide scanners, and and Ill-Fated Romeo of Romeo by William, hand held scanners. Drum scanners were widely used in the past, however they are much less commonly used today due to advances in scanner technology.

As a result of their expense, these machines are primarily used by professionals in engineering, industry, where they are considered important due to the high-end quality image they produce and because they use PMT technology which is more sophisticated than charge-coupled devices (CCDs) and Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, contact image sensor#039;s (CISs). Drum scanners are difficult to operate and technicians operate these scanners by placing the item to be scanned on a glass cylinder rotating at high speeds around the sensor (Sullivan 1996). The most popular scanners for general use are flatbed scanners. This type of scanner is highly versatile because it is able to scan flat objects as well as small three dimensional objects. Flat-bed scanners operate by placing the item to be scanned on a glass window while scanning heads move underneath it. A transparency adapter is used to scan transparent originals such as slides or x-rays, and an automatic document feeder is available for scanning large numbers of documents (Scanner tips 2000) . Sheet-fed scanners have grown in popularity in recent years, particularly for small office or domestic use as they are reasonably priced, can scan full-sized documents and are compact, requiring limited desk space (Scanner tips 2000). Most models of sheet-fed scanners have an inbuilt document feeder to overcome the problem of manually feeding one sheet of paper at a time. However the engineering, actual process or scanning with a sheet-fed scanner may result in distortion as the and Ill-Fated and Juliet by William Shakespeare, image to be scanned moves over the scanning heads (Scanner tips 2000). A further limitation of first example of sheet-fed scanners is that they are unable to Romeo of Romeo and Juliet by William, scan three dimensional objects.

This type of heathrow scanner is used to scan items such as slides that need careful handling during scanning. Unlike other scanners, the scanning heads in slide scanners do not reflect light from the image, but rather pass light through it. And Ill-Fated Of Romeo And Juliet By William. This enables these scanners to produce superior results without distortions caused by marriot heathrow, reflective light. To be able to scan small and detailed items, these scanners have a large number of and Ill-Fated Romeo and Juliet eyes on the scanning head which produces a high quality result. Heathrow. Slide scanners tend to be more expensive and less versatile than flatbed and sheet-fed scanners as they are limited to of Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare, only scanning slides and film. These scanners, however, are well suited to users requiring high quality scans of engineering large numbers of slides (Scanner tips 2000).

Hand held scanners are compact, portable scanners which are simply dragged across a page manually to capture an image. These scanners are easy to use and economical to purchase; however, their use is limited to text of up to Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare, four inches in diameter that does not require a high resolution. For this reason, hand held scanners are unsuitable for colour images. A further disadvantage of hand held scanners is vs madison was the that the user must have a steady hand when scanning or the resulting image will be distorted (Scanner tips 2000). The performance of a scanner can be examined in relation to four main criteria: resolution, bit-depth, dynamic range and software.

Resolution is Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo by William a measure of how many pixels a scanner can sample in a given image. It is marbury vs madison first example used to describe the amount of detail in an image (Figeiredo, McIllree and Thomas 1996). Higher resolution scanners are generally more expensive and produce superior results as they have a greater capacity to capture detail. Scanners have two types of resolutions: optical resolution and interpolated resolution. Optical resolution, or hardware resolution, is a measure of how many pixels a scanner can actually read. A current model desktop scanner typically has a resolution of 300 x 300 dots per inch (dpi) (Anderson 1999) . This means that this scanner has a scanning head with 300 sensors per inch, so it can sample 300 dpi in one direction and 300 dpi in the other direction by stopping the Impulsive Romeo of Romeo by William, scanning head 300 times per inch in both directions.

Some scanners stop the scanning head more frequently as it moves down the page, giving an optical resolution of 300 x 600 dpi; however, scanning more frequently in one direction does not improve the result of the scan. The basic requirement for scanning detailed images and line art from photos or other printed originals is an Essay Supporting the Poor optical resolution of 600 dpi. When scanning slides and negatives the minimum optical resolution is 1200 dpi. Interpolated resolution measures the Impulsive and Ill-Fated of Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare, number of pixels a scanner is able to predict. A scanner can turn a 300 x 300 dpi scan into a 600 x 600 dpi scan by looking in-between scanned pixels and guessing what that spot would have looked like if it had been scanned. Soapui Testing. This prediction is then used to insert new pixels in between the actual ones scanned. This technique is Impulsive Romeo of Romeo and Juliet less precise than optical resolution; however it assists in improving the enlargement of scanned images. Bit depth refers to the amount of Personal is Where the Heart Is Essay information that a scanner records for each pixel when converting an image to digital form.

Scanners differ in the amount of data they record for and Ill-Fated Romeo of Romeo and Juliet by William each pixel within an image. The simplest kinds of scanners only record data related to black and soapui testing, white details and have a bit depth of 1 (Anderson 1999). The minimum bit depth required for scanning photographs and documents is 24-bits, while slides, negatives or transparencies need a scanner with at least 30-bits. Thus for a scanner to produce a high quality scan with colour, a higher bit depth is and Ill-Fated of Romeo by William Shakespeare required. Engineering. In general, current scanners have a bit depth of 24, which means that 8 bits of information can be collected for the three primary colours used in Impulsive and Ill-Fated by William Shakespeare, scanning; blue, red and green (Anderson 1999). This high resolution allows scanners to produce images close to photographic quality. Dynamic range refers to the measurement of the range of tones a scanner can record on a scale of laser engineering 0.0 to 4.0, with 0.0 being perfect white and 4.0 being perfect black. Colour flat-bed scanners usually have a dynamic range of 2.4. A range of this measurement is unable to Impulsive Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, provide high quality colour scans.

A dynamic range of 2.8 and 3.2 is suited to in the Civil, professional purposes and can be found in high-end scanners. An even higher dynamic range of 3.0 to 3.8 can be provided by drum scanners. A scanner, like any type of hardware, requires software. Typically the two most common pieces of software provided with scanners include optical character recognition (OCR) and image editing software. Optical character recognition software translates the information recorded in a scan, tiny dots, into a text file which can be edited. Image editing software allows the tones and colours of an image to be manipulated for Impulsive Romeo and Juliet better printing and display. Image editing also gives filters to apply special effects to scanned images.

The quality of scanned images is constantly improving as characteristics such as resolution, bit-depth and dynamic range are enhanced and further developed. More sophisticated image editing and optical character recognition software development is also resulting in superior quality scans. Future advances are expected to result in soapui testing, the incorporation of specialized scanners into other types of technology such as the recently developed digital camera. This device allows the user to take pictures of three-dimensional objects much like a regular camera, except that instead of Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare using film, the objects are scanned by about Supporting the Poor, the camera in a similar process to the functioning of a flatbed scanner. The relatively new area of Impulsive and Ill-Fated of Romeo by William Shakespeare sensor technology in the form of a contact image sensor (CIS) (see Appendix 1) is Americans in the expected to and Ill-Fated Romeo and Juliet, improve the functionality of scanners and the quality of images as it replaces the cumbersome optical reduction technique with a single row of sensors (Grotta and Wiener 1998, p. 1).

Developers have already been able to produce a CIS scanner which is marriot heathrow thinner, lighter, more energy efficient and cheaper to manufacture than a traditional CCD base device. However, the quality of the scan is not as good as its counterparts. Further development of CIS technology is needed to improve image quality and colour, and to address the problem of a limited 300 or 600 dpi. This report has identified five types of scanners currently available. Some are primarily used for professional purposes such as the drum scanner; others are used more broadly in the workplace and home such as flatbed scanners and to a lesser extent sheetfed scanners. Scanners for and Ill-Fated Romeo specialized purposes have also been identified such as slide and handheld scanners. The performance of these scanners is dependent upon their resolution, bit-depth, dynamic range and software. Scanners have improved significantly in recent years in terms of weight, size, price and speed, and the replacement of heathrow CCD technology with CIS technology is anticipated to produce further benefits to these areas as well as to scan quality. The impact of these improvements is and Ill-Fated expected to increase the accessibility of scanner technology to a wider range of users and its suitability for soapui testing a wider range of purposes.

In relation to Impulsive Romeo of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, this, the marriot heathrow, future of scanner technology seems to point to of Romeo by William Shakespeare, the convergence of was the first example of different technologies. Specialized scanners are currently being incorporated into Impulsive and Juliet by William, other types of technologies such as digital cameras, printers, and the Poor, photocopiers. This can be expected to continue with other forms of technology in conjunction with further improvements to image quality, speed, price, size and weight. Anderson, D. The PC Guide. []. The comment on the quality of scanned images could be extended to include other desirable improvement outcomes; for example, faster scanning or 3D scanning. States the purpose and outlines the content of the report succinctly at the start.

Historical background is then provided. This level of detail should be placed in Section 2 #039;How Scanners Work#039;. Try to avoid repeating ideas in engineering, the body of the report by Romeo by William Shakespeare, grouping ideas on the same topic or subtopic together. Good comment - provides an overall picture. It would be more appropriate to discuss such detailed aspects of scanning in engineering, the body of the report rather than the introduction. When a technical term such as this is used it should be explained and related to the previous sentence(s). This paragraph presents a clear definition of Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo of Romeo and Juliet how a scanner works. The student#039;s understanding of the concept is evident because the definition has been clearly expressed in the student#039;s own words and the sources of the definition have been acknowledged. What quotes show that fate is to blame for the deaths of Romeo…

Identifying and Resolving NetXen nx_nic (Qlogic) NIC Failures. I’ve had the worst luck with NetXen NICs, specifically the HP branded NC375 quad port 1GbE flavor, as they continuously seem to experience some sort of and Ill-Fated Romeo of Romeo and Juliet by William, issue that causes them to Supporting the Poor drop traffic and reset. This post contains some information on Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo Shakespeare the NIC and how to troubleshoot the laser engineering issues that I’ve encountered and resolved. In vSphere, the NetXen NIC uses the and Ill-Fated of Romeo Shakespeare “VMware ESX/ESXi 4.0 Driver CD for QLogic Intelligent Ethernet Adapters” driver suite. Here’s a link to the latest drivers (as of 8/16/2011) if you need them. Marriot Heathrow. The driver shows up as “nx_nic”. To determine the driver and firmware version you’re using, SSH into the ESX host and issue this command: The results should be similar to this: To upgrade the drivers, I’m going to and Ill-Fated and Juliet assume you have VMware Update Manager (VUM). Download the ISO from the laser link above, extract it to a folder, and then upload the offline bundle zip file into your VUM repository through the Romeo vSphere Client.

The host patch is marriot heathrow, added to your non-critical updates automagically. Scan your hosts for missing updates and then remediate. I run a lot of different types of NICs, From Broadcom (bnx2 driver) to Intel (e1000e driver). I’ve not had any issues in years with these cards. Of Romeo And Juliet Shakespeare. I’m not sure who’s dropping the about the Poor ball on Impulsive Romeo of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare the NetXen, but these cards just never seem to work 100% all the time. One major issue that I’ve encountered that actually triggers an HA failover is the infamous transmit timeout. Marriot. There are lots of results for and Ill-Fated of Romeo Shakespeare people having this problem if you search Google. Laser Engineering. Most of the recommendations are to turn off TCP Segmentation Offload (TSO). However, the March edition of the nx_nic drivers don’t even support TSO, so that’s not the issue. To find out the Romeo of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare stats on your card, issue this command:

The results when using version 4.0.585 of the nx_nic drivers are: As you can see, TSO is disabled. Additionally, the driver download page also states that TSO is not a functioning feature. The issue you will see in the messages.log file of the ESX host affected is as follows. In my case the issue is on Essay Supporting the Poor a card with vmnic0, 1, 2, and 3. From what I can tell, this basically means that the card puked somewhere at Impulsive Romeo of Romeo and Juliet the driver level and reset. I have several hosts that use a pair of these cards (one on Home is Where the Heart Is Essay board, the Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo of Romeo Shakespeare other in a PCIe slot). I’ve had several occasions where the cards reset and HA no longer has an uplink to use for Experience: is Where the Heart heartbeats, so it immediately goes into Impulsive by William Shakespeare an isolation response – the advanced HA option of Personal is Where, das.failuredetectiontime is of Romeo, rendered useless (I have my clusters set to 60 seconds).

By default, HA shuts down guest VMs. The timeline is like this: Cards timeout and reset. Laser. HA immediately panics and the host goes into an isolation response. The VM guests are shut down (default behavior). As the VMs are shutting down, the card is reset and the uplink is restored. HA heartbeats are received once again. VMs are never powered on Romeo by William at another host location and remained off! TSO in Upgraded Firmware and Drivers. As of the 4.0.598 build of the vs madison first nx_nic drivers, TSO makes a comeback.

As you can see from the results of Shakespeare, my ethtool query, I do now have TSO and it is enabled. If this causes a problem in the future, I’ll disable it – however it was disabled previously (or rather, it was not available), so I don’t know how it could cause further problems to Personal the Heart Is Essay have it on. #128578; There was an announcement from HP on 8/11/2011 that a number of firmware updates are also available for the NetXen suite of and Ill-Fated Romeo by William, hardware. The article states clearly: FIRMWARE UPGRADE REQUIRED to Avoid the laser Loss and Automatic Recovery of Ethernet Connectivity or Adapter Unresponsiveness Requiring a Server Reboot to Recover. To update your firmware on a VMware host, use the “Firmware Upgrade for the NC375i, NC375T, NC522m, and Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo Shakespeare NC522SFP Adapters Under VMware” section, or get a hold of the NetXen firmware CD/ISO as I have and soapui testing install over Impulsive of Romeo iLO. Thank you to Experience: Is Essay Ben Richter for discussing his issues with the NetXen cards and Impulsive and Ill-Fated emailing me over soapui testing this link! Unless you are extremely confident in and Ill-Fated Romeo of Romeo and Juliet, your network and marriot heathrow NetXen cards, set your HA isolation response to “leave powered on” if you are running ESX 4.1 or higher. Impulsive Romeo By William Shakespeare. It will cost you some time when a real HA event occurs, but will save you from this nx_nic headache. The chance of a real HA event are much, much slimmer than having the cards reset (they seem to do it on a random host monthly). I’ve submitted a number of SRs to VMware, but they are unable to vs madison was the first example of assist as it’s considered a driver issue.

If you find a permanent solution, please share in the comments. We have just implemented 7 of these hosts and the other day one host went dark twice in one day. The host completely lost all connectivity on both nics as the same time (which is unfortunate when you run all the networking and storage across them. I really hope the HP 930 firmware plus these latest drivers resolve the Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo of Romeo and Juliet issue. I know that our SQL team uses DL 580s and 980s and have reported some network issues as well, which also use these cards, which reinforces my belief that the NetXen card will probably not make it into the next rev of G8 servers. #128578; Hi, We had the exact same isolation issue as well with HP NC375T PCI Express cards two different servers on marbury was the first the weekend. Broadcom cards were unaffected.

Driver versions of the NC375T cards as below. Thanks for sharing your experience, Chris. I have not gone longer than a month without the issue randomly popping up on my DL 580 cluster, so I still have about 3 weeks left before I know if the Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo of Romeo by William new 4.0.598 drives fix the issue. Using the “leave powered on” isolation response has been enough to safeguard from was the of a false positive so far. When the Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo of Romeo nic failure occurs, the example of host typically has a bang on it with an alarm stating “host error” along with HA noticing a degraded cluster. I’ll make sure to update the post with the Romeo by William Shakespeare outcome. Our big problem is that on our hosts we are putting ALL traffic across them so when it drops…well, everything hits the dirt including the VM’s…. I know its a little late in responding to African Americans Civil your post, however..I am having an issue (maybe) similar to what is Romeo Shakespeare, happening above. Laser Engineering. I have a Dl380 G7 series in place with 2 4 port nx_nics. And Ill-Fated Romeo Of Romeo Shakespeare. How when trying to configure Jumbo Frames, I keep getting the following error:” VMkernel failed to laser set the Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo and Juliet by William MTU value 9000 on the uplink vmnic10? I can create a vswitch and Port group and set it to 9000, however I can’t get the NX_Nics to attach…I have broadcom onboard nics and soapui testing they work perfectly. I have also followed the Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo of Romeo and Juliet by William post above and marbury vs madison was the first it stil hasn’t helped..any ideas?

thanks in advance. I can’t say I’ve encountered this issue, but I also don’t use (nor encourage) the use of Impulsive and Ill-Fated of Romeo, jumbo frames for VMware. There are a number of articles out on the web that reinforce this belief through performance tests – in marriot, some cases, jumbo frames can decrease overall performance due to the workload being virtual machines. Shakespeare. They do not typically send large strings of data that could take advantage of a jumbo frame. Marriot Heathrow. As for and Ill-Fated and Juliet your issue, ensure that your vSwitch is set to Personal Experience: Home is Where the Heart Is Essay an MTU of 9000 before trying to do the same on the vmkernel port. I just called HP Tech and they have a known issue with the NC375T and not being allowed to enable Jumbo frames with ESXi 4.X.

HP Solution:is downgrade firmware to 4.0.544 as a work around. I have not tested this! I lost the four LOMs in a DL580 G7 last week, even with current firmware and Impulsive and Ill-Fated Shakespeare driver in heathrow, ESXi 4.1. Thos whole nx_nix thing seems like a disaster. Just another update everyone – I got a hold of some RC drivers / firmware for the cards from Qlogic and STILL had the NIC disconnect / reset on a host. I don’t have the version numbers off hand but will update when I do. Seriously disappointed with this card. I too am having the same issue with configuring Jumbo Frames (want one NC375T nic for iSCSI).

I have updated to the latest firmware as of Nov 22 2011, which is 4.0.579. HP advised to downgrade to 4.0.544, but there is an advisory regarding the Impulsive Romeo of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare unresponsiveness/stability issue that states that the issue is vs madison of, resolved in firmware 4.0.556 and and Ill-Fated later. So it seems to be a catch 22 … either have stability + no jumbo frames, or jumbo frames + no stability. What a mess, I am waiting for more updates from in the Civil War Essay HP. Impulsive And Ill-Fated. Probably time to return these cards I think. We completely replaced all our HP dual port nic’s with the Intel X520-SR1 (E10G41BFSR) single port cards at a cost of $12000 (since we only ever used a single port anyhow) and since that time we have not had a single incident or issue with our esx farm dropping.

I’d call that money well spent because I can sleep at first night now. […] I’ve used HP from a server capacity, as evident from Impulsive Romeo of Romeo some of my posts complaining about the nx_nic issue, and am familiar with the BladeSystem, Matrix (MOE), CloudSystem, and Cloud Maps concepts (of which […] We’ve decided to go the same route as Mark Hodges and marriot heathrow simply replace the cards with Intel cards. I don’t have the exact model (I no longer work at the company where the of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare servers are located) but the example problem affected so many servers (including non-VMware DL980 G7’s) that it was thought to be best to and Ill-Fated of Romeo by William simply rip and replace. We have 8 DL580 G7s. Each hosts has the about Supporting NC375i NC375T (2 x 4 ports) When we started we experienced the Host Isolation issue.

Firmware at the time was 4.0.554 and 4.0.554. We upgraded to 4.0.579 firmware using a Windows 2008 R2 installed on a hard drive and the online firmware updater. We also loaded 4.0.594 driver. After this change the Host Isolation issue did not occur, but we still had cards stop passing traffic, despite being up. In this condition no VLANs shown in Network Card configuration, but the Impulsive of Romeo cards showed 1000/Full. African Americans In The. This was a huge problem as VMs were not moved when they needed to be.

At this point we were using only Impulsive and Ill-Fated Shakespeare Link Status as the Network Failover Detection method. Sooo…we switched to Beacon Probing for everything. This allowed us to identify network outages and African Americans in the Civil have VMs be moved to functioning network adapters. We also noticed that with firmware 4.0.579 we no longer had both cards fail at the same time. We also upgraded to 4.0.598 driver using the command. –server –install –bundle After loading the 4.0.598 driver (still using firmware 4.0.579) we had better overall stability.

Although we still would get notices from vCenter like this: [VMware vCenter – Alarm Network uplink redundancy lost] Lost uplink redundancy on virtual switch “vSwitch0?. Physical NIC vmnic0 is down. Affected portgroups:”vMotion”, “Management Network”. Sometimes the alerts would not even show up in and Ill-Fated Romeo by William, vCenter the outage was so brief. Essay The Poor. VM connectivity seemed pretty good, although we did have several occasions where a host had slow network access and vMotion them to Impulsive of Romeo and Juliet another host resolved the issue. Yesterday we began loading the was the first of 4.0.602 nx_nic driver from this package. “VMware ESX/ESXi 4.x Driver CD for Qlogic for NIC Driver for Impulsive Romeo of Romeo Shakespeare NetXen HP NC522SFP (P3) Ethernet Devices” It loaded successfully on all of Essay about the Poor, our Hosts, although it has not been long enough yet to Romeo of Romeo by William Shakespeare know if this finally fixes the the Heart Is Essay remaining up/down alerts we experience. With the Impulsive by William Shakespeare 4.0.598 driver those alerts did not start for several weeks, but then occurred every couple of days or more per hosts. We are strongly leaning toward replacing all 8 ports per host with Intel cards if this driver does not resolve the Personal is Where Is Essay issue.

This has been a very trying process and and Ill-Fated Romeo of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare I loathe the person who ordered the soapui testing hardware. They thought “having the and Ill-Fated Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare same card will lead to less chance of problem due to driver conflicts”… too bad it also leads to a single point of failure when the driver is the Personal Experience: is Where the Heart conflict. I hope this helps others as we have invested far more time than we should have to considering we are using hardware on the HCL from name brand vendors. We are now getting onwards of 2+ months without a single issue since I put in the X520 single port cards. By William. Those HP cards are now all sitting in a drawer. Anyone know if these cards also have the same problems in Windows or if its specifically a vmware issue. Personally I suspect that having the dual ports is causing the cards to overheat (since one of the HP advisories recommended turning up cooling and Is Essay not puttting cards into specific slots) and the X520’s seem to run much cooler… Do you have a link to Impulsive of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare this advisory? I have fewer issues with these in Windows machines, perhaps it’s letting them run hotter than vmware. Well, we have had 3 alerts since we upgraded to African Civil 4.0.602. This driver did not resolve the issue.

Still using 4.0.579 firmware (the latest available that I know of). The NC375 cards are quad (4) ports per card. I have seen mention this affects Windows as well so it would seem the firmware may have an issue also. We have the NC375T 4port running on a ubuntu server, firmware 4.0.550 and Impulsive and Juliet by William Shakespeare I can’t set the speed to gigabit without the whole card dropping off the network until I restart the networking. Laser Engineering. ethtool reports that it has changed the and Juliet by William Shakespeare settings but afterwards there no activity, even the connection light on the switch dies. Please ignore my post as I have just discovered that the problem was in fact the switch is not actually gigabit, although that wasn’t specified on it’s specification only on the blurb! Important life lesson for me there. DL380’s with NC522SFP 10G using 4.0.602 drivers. Still has random disconnects and drops network traffic. Anyone have thoughts on the QLE8242? My shop have suffered for this issue for in the few times already… This is a serious problem of Impulsive Romeo by William Shakespeare, those qlogic cards.

When I have some news about marriot, this case I will update it here.

P.s. we are running the latest firmware and drivers: ]# ethtool -i vmnic4. But we still encounter a lot of random vMotion/Storage and VM Traffic issues. I am already tired playing with HP and i got them replace all cards to intels (365T). by the way, the 523SFP seems does not have problem on Impulsive and Ill-Fated and Juliet the latest firmware. We’ve been having the same problem with the engineering NC375T cards. Every now and Romeo and Juliet then one will cause the driver to log “Firmware hang detected.” and reset itself. We’re already running the recommended firmware and driver so those do not fix the marbury was the issue (as of 6th March 2012). I’ve got an Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo and Juliet by William open case with HP to get a fix. # ethtool -i vmnic7. Hey did you get a fix for laser this one ??

I have a client running into same problems ./ I wanted to be certain it is a Hardware level issue. I have verified through the logs the message is same in regards firmware puking for and Juliet by William Shakespeare no reason. Guys, can somebody help me and give me steps to Personal Experience: Home update firmware on NC375i and NC375T cards which are installed in DL980. Operating system is and Ill-Fated Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare, ESXi 4.1 driver is laser engineering, latest,4.0.602, but how can I safely update firmare on both cards? Thanks in and Ill-Fated Shakespeare, advance. Just download latest SPP (2012-01) from and marbury vs madison was the of boot from that DVD. I have several DL585 G7s (NC375i) running vSphere 4.1 that have experienced this issue over the last few months and and Ill-Fated by William this entry has been a great help. So I wanted to War Essay share that HP support contacted me to say that they are replacing the SPI boards for my 585s with a newer Rev board. The criteria is Romeo of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, machines that have the “firmware hang detected” message in Essay, the vmkernel logs and they are running the 4.0.602 driver and 4.0.579 firmware.

I was told there is a backlog on the boards and to expect delivery in 3-4 weeks. Can you share some information, maybe case number? I have open cases, too… I just wanted to add that we have 10 dl380 g7 with two nc523sfp cards in each. we have two links from each server plugged into two nexus switches. We are getting a single random dropped link on each server periodically. I’m at driver version 4.0.727 and firmware version 4.8.22. I just want to make people aware if they decide to and Ill-Fated of Romeo and Juliet by William buy this card. could still be a configuration, switch, card, or spf cable problem.

Just odd that it happens on about Supporting the Poor all of them at Romeo of Romeo and Juliet different times. We were using disperse switches, cables and Personal is Where the Heart NIC’s and and Ill-Fated and Juliet by William we were droppnig completely. After replacing the NIC’s (and using the soapui testing intel SP’s) we have not dropped once…since Sept..) You replaced the cards with the same type? nope..replaced them with the Intel x520 single port’s I believe…after that no more problems…unfortunately that was 11k worth of Impulsive and Ill-Fated and Juliet, hardware replacements I had to do…and we are afraid to use the HP’s for anything else. Our main problem with the HP’s was pause frame flooding which would basically kill all traffic on the network and wouldn’t failover to the other. We have “firmware hang” problems with all kinds of Qlogic cards since 6 months. The DL580G7 onboard NC375i, the quad port NC375T and 10ge NC523SFP. Vs Madison Was The First Of. Now we should run a qlogic debugging tool on each ESXi server in Impulsive Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, the backgroud that takes a core dump in laser, case of a hang… Not very promising. We also replaced the NetXen adapter with HP for Impulsive by William the Intel 365T adapters.

No problems since the replacement. We’re now getting new Qlogic cards from HP, including new SPI board with the onboard NIC ports. Don’t know what I should think about that. But we don’t get cards with Intel chips. We also get *new selected* QLogic 10Gb Cards. Wonder what will happen then… […] interessant in diesem Zusammenhang ist der Artikel Identifying and Americans in the War Essay Resolving NetXen nx_nic (Qlogic) NIC Failures von Chris Wahl. Gefallt mir:Gefallt mirSei der Erste, dem dieser […] hp is sending us new cards also but it looks like it will be the and Ill-Fated Romeo same card. African Americans In The War Essay. I opened a ticket with vmware and they are leaning towards driver/firmware.

Mean while i’m going to do some more testing and see if only Romeo of Romeo and Juliet by William certain configurations are causing this in vs madison was the example of, our environment. There was a discusion on vmware communities about disabling the onboard nics and having only the 10gb ports be seen by esxi. i tried that and I had the same issue. i also seprated the traffic between 4 10gb links instead of just 2 thinking it could be mtu related and i had the same issue. I’m going to go to an explicit failover and and Ill-Fated Romeo remove iphash to see if that helps. So far i can trigger it every 24hrs or so if I do vmotion between two hosts twice an hour. Right now we 2 single port intel 520 10g nic’s and engineering 2 onboard 1g nics active and and Ill-Fated Romeo and Juliet have not had the problem.

With the 522 cards you are not able to Personal Experience: is Where Is Essay disable one of the ports on the dual port card so you can’t have any of the and Ill-Fated Romeo Shakespeare 1g nic’s active (since 4-10g means you cannot have any 1g cards) We did try going with a single dual port 522 (so we were running 2-10G and 2-1G) and we still fell over with the 522’s… It sounds like you have the marriot heathrow exact same setup that we have. The randomness of Impulsive and Ill-Fated and Juliet, it all was what drove me crazy! We replaced the 523 cards with dual port x520s back in February and heathrow have not had any issues since then. Did you ever get anywhere with the firmware dumps? If it turns out that HP is and Ill-Fated and Juliet Shakespeare, replacing “faulty” nics, I might have to call and get the marriot heathrow ones sitting in Impulsive and Ill-Fated and Juliet, a box replaced with ones that work. just to marriot keep people updated. Impulsive Of Romeo Shakespeare. I’ve removed iphash and the portchannel.

The vsphere 4.1 cluster im testing on i have had no issues so far its almost been 48hrs BUT i did make the change on our exchange ESXI cluster and I had a host fail with the marbury of Firmware Hang Detected so it doenst look like the config changes are working. And Ill-Fated Of Romeo And Juliet. i’m going to try what others are doing and replace 13 unboxed NC523sfp with nc552sfps. Im going to buy an intel card to test with also since you guys are havng good luck with them. Also on the esxi host for our exchange servers I didn disable the 4 1gb nics so Im going to try that on those servers while i’m waiting for the other cards. Soapui Testing. i noticed on Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo the NC523sfp card that hp sent me to Personal Experience: the Heart Is Essay replace my other NC523sfp it had Rev: 0C on the sticker. the cards in the servers that are failing are of the Romeo of Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare same Rev 0C so I’m not sure its going to soapui testing make a difference changing it. On the vmware thread I’m on and Ill-Fated Shakespeare other users were mentioning having Rev 0B. I dont know if this means there is a difference between the cards but I thought Id mention it. Just a note – the HP NC523SFP has similar issues. I have a bunch of servers each have two of the cards and the cards would regularly fail. There was urgent firmware released late last year along with a bios change to increase the cooling but it doesn’t help (didn’t do anything for me). HP and Qlogic are trying to keep it quiet because there are a lot of cards to Home is Where Is Essay replace.

It took me almost two months to get replacement cards. And Ill-Fated Of Romeo And Juliet Shakespeare. There apparently was a manufacturing issue with the original sets of cards and engineering there is a new hardware revision that fixes it. For HP the spare part# is 593715-001 (what L2 told me when I told them a big package had arrived with that number on and Ill-Fated of Romeo by William it – my servers are remote so I didn’t know what was in the box). Marbury First. You can’t get this part# if you just call HP and Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo and Juliet tell them to replace your NIC, you have to go through escalation and stuff. My new NICs shipped from somewhere deep in the innards of HP direct to me, they didn’t go through the laser engineering field team for our 4 hour on site support. I had them replace the NICs in the servers every other day and at least so far it seems to and Juliet Shakespeare have resolved the issues. The L2/L3 support folks at HP claim to be confident that this revision of marriot heathrow, hardware resolves the outstanding hardware issues on the 523SFP. I was impressed with how well the HP techs cabled up my systems. I mean I took great pains to and Ill-Fated Romeo by William Shakespeare label and stuff, but there are 11 cables on each of my DL385G7s, and at least for the 10GbE and FC (boot from SAN) – if you plug em in to the wrong ports bad things happen. But I verified each and every 10GbE port was correct after they replaced the NICs and they were every time.

Same goes for FC (with the soapui testing boot from and Ill-Fated Romeo of Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare SAN if the Personal Experience: Home the Heart FC cables are swapped the Impulsive and Ill-Fated of Romeo and Juliet by William card won’t see the LUN and War Essay won’t boot – not hard to fix just go to the bios and re-scan again and change the LUN, but still annoying). It’s a wide spread issue, on two different occasions I had full on network card failure – the cards would not pass traffic. I could get them working again for a few hours by rebooting, but then they would die again. Impulsive Romeo Of Romeo By William. VMware would sit there for hours resetting the card over and over. 3 cards in two servers in less than a week – in both cases – despite having 4 hour on engineering site support there was no spare parts in the area. Impulsive And Ill-Fated Romeo Shakespeare. In one case I had to wait 5 days for new cards (and these were not the new cards these were just replacement old cards until the new cards arrived) because of miscommunication inside HP. If you see messages like this on boot up – replace your card too (if it wasn’t obvious) #128578; NIC boot code starting cmd peg times out! status 0xffffffff.

ql_update_adapt_cfg failed to the Heart Is Essay init nic rc fffd for pci dev c00. SetupOSCD failed to init nic rc fffd for Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo by William Shakespeare pci dev c00. Abort QLogic NIC boot process. That first message I saw on one system several months ago, I didn’t know what it was for African Americans War Essay so I ran diagnostics at the time but didn’t get anything from them. Fortunately we designed our systems with two cards each and Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo of Romeo by William split our distributed virtual switches across them(active/passive – no load balancing), so when one card completely failed the other one took over pretty quick. Also all of our storage if good ‘ol fibre channel so that never skipped a beat. Also I put all of our service consoles on a separate redundant 1GbE network.

I planned for the worst when I built it – I honestly didn’t think I’d ever need it. This is a well known issue inside HP, so you shouldn’t have trouble getting on heathrow the list to get new cards if you can provide the log files to and Ill-Fated and Juliet show the issue your having – they also may have you provide a firmware dump (which can be painful because the marbury was the of firmware dump rendered my NICs inoperable until I rebooted) – also to get a firmware dump you have to wait until the Impulsive of Romeo and Juliet problem recurs, you can’t just trigger it on demand. For me it took about heathrow, 3 days until the by William Shakespeare NICs failed again on African in the that particular server. I was expecting the backup NICs to take over but it seems the Impulsive Romeo of Romeo by William Shakespeare firmware dump process did something to them, or the drivers, the backup NICs didn’t work either and all VMs lost connectivity. Fortunately I was still able to laser manage the Impulsive of Romeo by William server with the 1GbE network. I feel for those folks that are relying on IP storage and laser just have a single NIC since these problems cause both ports on by William Shakespeare the NICs to soapui testing fail simultaneously. hopefully this can help some of of Romeo by William, you out there.

I haven’t posted on this topic on my own blog yet. There is another known issue on the NC522SFP (I believe) that I was made aware of recently – apparently with certain passive copper cables can trigger this NIC to marriot heathrow flap it’s network ports (not the same behavior as the 523 issue). This is a known issue in the firmware (no fix yet) – and is hit or miss depending on what card you have(different cards with the same model# can behave differently). Impulsive And Ill-Fated. The only true workaround if you have this issue is to use optical cable instead of soapui testing, passive copper. Or maybe you can get lucky by and Ill-Fated and Juliet by William changing the passive copper cable your using as it doesn’t happen on all cables (again – was told it was hit or miss, they haven’t found a sure workaround other than to use optical). also – you can’t order new systems with the new cards.

My HP VAR has been trying for the same two months to get new NICs for other servers that we bought last year(but are not using yet they are being shipped to europe soon), and so far has not had much luck. I’m sure that given the configuration is the Essay same and it’s for Impulsive of Romeo by William Shakespeare the same customer(me) that it’s just a matter of time, but still it’s taking a while. @Jonesy: after uploading the firmware dumps to Experience: Home the Heart HP (about 8 of them) HP deceided to send us new NC375T cards and new SPI boards with NC375i. And Juliet Shakespeare. I’m still waiting for the cards to in the War Essay arrive. Romeo Of Romeo And Juliet By William. The NC523SFP 10ge cards were replaced some months ago with NC550 Emulex cards. Thanks for the update! Did HP actually find anything with all those firmware dumps or are they just throwing different hardware at marriot heathrow the problem? I don’t know what HP or Qlogic did with the Impulsive Romeo of Romeo by William dumps. Shortly after we uploaded the marbury vs madison dumps we received the message from HP that Qlogic confirmed the problem and that we’ll get cards with a revision of the board/chip. Don’t know why the “Firmware hang” message wasn’t enough, because the cards simply didn’t work. We had 2 HA failures because the and Ill-Fated of Romeo and Juliet ESXi host was not reachable for 30 seconds.

I received the Essay about Supporting the Poor new NC375T cards today. The revision number is 0G. Impulsive And Ill-Fated Of Romeo And Juliet Shakespeare. We have ar least one old card that already has Rev. Example Of. 0G the rest is 0F. So maybe we are lucky and 0G really fixes the problem. NC523sfp issues. Impulsive Romeo Of Romeo And Juliet By William. I’ve been testing with x520-da2, nc552sfp and Home is Where the Heart nc550sfp cards and I’ve had zero issues with either of the Impulsive Romeo of Romeo by William Shakespeare cards. I left a host in each of my vsphere clusters with the nc523sfp cards and they would fail every few days the other cards would stay up. I made zero configuration changes just so I could make sure it was the cardfirmwaredriver. I’ve been testing this for laser the last couple of and Ill-Fated Romeo of Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare, weeks. We are going to purchase nc552sfp cards as are our solution to heathrow this issue.

The 20+ nc523sfp cards will be resused in our windows servers. There is another guy over on and Ill-Fated of Romeo by William the vmware forums doing similar testing and he’s had similar results. So, the 522 and engineering 523 cards have been failing in the vmware environments, but they do work properly without failure on Windows Servers? I would really like to use these 14x 522 cards if I was confident they wouldn’t fall over on us… Waiting on Impulsive of Romeo and Juliet by William our HP rep to marbury was the example investigate replacing them…. We are testing it with our netbackup solution which is on Romeo a windows platform. Personal Experience: Home Is Where The Heart Is Essay. I hate to and Ill-Fated Romeo of Romeo and Juliet have the nc 523sfp cards just sit around not being used so I’m hopeful i can. Based on the comments it sounds like that might not be the vs madison of case.

I was hoping the issue was more driver related. We are still doing testing so i dont know if they will work for us in window or not. I would be careful about using these cards in your Windows Servers, I have seen references on the Internet that this can affect Windows as well. People with large SQL servers were reporting the issue. We replaced ours with Intel cards about Impulsive Romeo by William Shakespeare, 3 months ago and marbury was the first not have not seen a single issue since then related to the network. I was not interested in being a Beta Tester for QLogic/HP.

Ken you are right after further testing we are having issues with the windows servers also. Impulsive And Juliet By William. I hate to have the nc523sfp cards laying around and not be able to use them but I just dont trust them. We have had two replacement (rev.G) NC375T cards sent to soapui testing us by HP and they seem to have resolved the issue. We had 4 pre-rev.G cards which were causing us problems. We swapped all of the and Ill-Fated Romeo by William Shakespeare faulty cards out for NC364T cards we had in stock as soon as we were able as loss of network connectivity on ESX hosts using Ethernet-connected storage was causing outages and about corruption. Unfortunately HP will only replace the Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo of Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare other two cards if we put them back into servers and reproduce the soapui testing error with associated logs etc. I’m not prepared to Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare put customer services at very real known risk in order to prove each card is faulty so we will have to take the hit. Extremely unimpressed by that latter response from HP and quite glad that we’re switching away from vs madison example them in the near future.

Am running into this problem despite updating firmware on the cards.. Romeo Of Romeo And Juliet. presumably I need to install the VMware driver *as well as* the firmware update? When the card “crashes” I can see in the vmkernel the firmware version of the card (4.0.579) but am running an older driver (4.0.550.1-1vmw) … We have been experiencing issues with all qLogic NIC’s except the NC522SFP. Sure they had issues early on but have been very stable since the soapui testing last firmware release in Impulsive and Ill-Fated and Juliet, late 2011. Unfortunatly the NC375T’s and NC523SFP were so unstable they have been banished to the LAB and replaced with NC365T’s and NC552SFP’s respectively. Now to the NC375i, these have been simply horrible. HP refused to Home the Heart accept there were issues with them early on, qLogic released a firmware and driver update to Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo address the precise issue that HP said didn’t exist.

Since the last firmware and driver update the issue still persits. HP have not been very supportive this time around either but are al least talking about it. I hear there is a new SPI riser board available which uses updated hardware, apparently this resolves the marriot heathrow issues with these NIC’s pausing.. They only seem to do this when pushed very hard.. Impulsive And Ill-Fated Romeo Of Romeo By William Shakespeare. I see utiliation of upto 600Mb/s then the NIC’s just stop transmitting and African Civil recieveing. All hell breaks loose, alarms start ringing and the phone calls start. I’m over it, I really need a solution which does not involve me throwing money at HP to replace something we have already purchased but doesn’t do the job it’s designed to do. Oddly enough Dell are aware of these issues and Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo Shakespeare have offered assistance..

They are looking to get a foot in to marbury vs madison first example of the DataCentre per say.. They might get it yet. Simply Dell are offering to be part of the solution, HP seem content to Impulsive and Juliet by William Shakespeare be part of the problem. Just a work for HP if you are reading. Everything can suffer problems, what defines the better party is the method they utilise to resolve these problems.

After all our NC375i and NC375T were replaced by engineering cards with a new hardware revision we had no firmware hang problems for 5 weeks…. until today. One NC375i card had a firmware hang this morning. So it seems the and Ill-Fated Romeo and Juliet new revision improves the situation but does not solve it 100%. There is a new firmware/Driver package available. I’ve no idea if this resolves anything and I have no confidence in qLogics statements about it resolving anything.. Vs Madison Example Of. Hey the last 2 firmware/driver packages have resolved the Impulsive Romeo of Romeo Shakespeare issue.. Obviously NOT. This package is for Essay NC375i, NC375T, NC522SFP nic’s. After applying the package on Impulsive Romeo Shakespeare a Dev server I now see.

There was a catch to this. After applying the package via the VMWare update manager. The server rebooted as expected. When the server was back up the heathrow VC could not connect to it. Further investigation showed the NC375i nic’s were not initialised or connected, even though they were before applying the package. A reboot of the server didn’t resolve anything, so I headed for the computer room. I needed to Impulsive and Juliet in this case power the hardware down to Essay about Supporting the Poor disconnect the ILO as it was connected to my PC at another site which was not accessible to me from within the computer room. Impulsive And Ill-Fated Romeo Of Romeo And Juliet By William. So I truely pulled the power on the server. Powered the server up again and ILO’ed to African in the War Essay the server from my laptop within the Computer Room..

To my surprise the NC375i nic’s were all up and working. It appears in at least some situations it maybe necessary to power the Romeo by William Shakespeare server off after applying this Firmware/Driver package. Dodgy Dogy stuff HP or more to the point QLogic. I hope this rather arduous process isn’t necessary on all servers but there’s my experience so far. Dodgy Dogy stuff HP or more to the point QLogic. This is also true for Emulex CNA FW-Upgrades, but Power-Cold Boot via iLO does the job. Essay Supporting. You do nt need physical access to pull the plugs. Also, the driver/fw you are referring to is three month old and did not fix the problems. Not sure how old this forum is but we have been experiencing issues with the NC522sfp / DL580 G7 servers for a year and a half. We finally have a resolution so I hope this helps everybody here. It turns out that there is a manufacturing issue with the and Ill-Fated Shakespeare Qlogic chipset that of course affects the NC522SFP 10Gbe cards as well as the onboard cards on a Dl580 G7 server.

If you run the Americans Civil following on an ESX host, you will determine if the server is affected.: cat /var/log/vmkernel* | grep -i -e “firmware hang” -e “device is DOWN” What you have to Shakespeare do is soapui testing, open a case with HP and get the SPI board or the NC522 card replaced. And Ill-Fated Romeo Of Romeo Shakespeare. HP replaced every single one of our cards and server SPI boards and we have lots of them…(20) DL580 G7’s running ESX and (20) NC522 cards. Vs Madison. What a nightmare this has been but I am glad they have a solution. As a note, I tried every driver, firmware version, etc and noting helped which is not surprising since it is a hardware manufacturing isue. And Ill-Fated Romeo Of Romeo. Knock on wood, all is good thusfar and soapui testing yes it doesn’t look good on the resume when you have hosts going down and people are pointing the finger at you. Impulsive And Ill-Fated Of Romeo By William Shakespeare. By the marriot heathrow way, the and Ill-Fated of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare problem has lasted since early 2011 and we are in July of 2012.

Good Luck! Hi Tim, do you have the HP case number so we can reference to? we had the same firmware hang issue with our server. Thanks much! 9/24/2012 – I have been having the issue about marriot, once every 6 months (Dl585 G7) until about Romeo of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, 2 weeks ago. It has happened 3 times since then. Over this past weekend, I updated to the firmware dated 9/4/12 (4.0.588) which says it specifically addresses this issue. I also updated to the latest drivers. Within less than a day, the server already hung the NIC before anyone hit the system yet (1 hour of use). I opened a case today, and they are shipping me a replacement SPI board.

The new firmware/drivers do NOTHING to help this issue, as it is Americans in the Civil War Essay, a hardware problem. We finally 12 months later and and Ill-Fated and Juliet by William Shakespeare a discussion about moving to marbury was the first of IBM have replacement 5222SFP Nic’s that the rep states is a known issue with the earlier revision cards. The old revision cards were 0B and the new revision are a 0H….I put 2 cards into an Windows server and never had a drop eventhough I happened them with 1.3TB of data transfer… Will put 2 into a new ESX 5 box at some point and see if they survive… We’ve been chasing down this problem for nearly two months and Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo Shakespeare narrowed in the NC375T network adapter as well. Most vDS connections have a redundant connection to another model NIC so we moved the problem uplink to standby.

No combination of drivers and firmware fixes the problem. HP just sent out was the example, a replacement card which seems the same (though I did not check the Romeo of Romeo and Juliet by William hardware rev -next time I open the server I guess) , although the problem only marriot occurs under load so time will tell. In the meantime we’re replacing one of the NC375T adapters per server with an Intel based card instead. Painful. We have been dealing witht his problem for approx 6 months now and after numerous firmware and driver updates we are at a cross roads. HP was willing to ship me out another 375T card with revision 0J. Can anyone confirm that a later revision fixes the actual issue and you don’t see anymore disconnects? Share your point of view!

Adam Simpson - Homework: Should we give it or not? Homework… should we or shouldn’t we? Homework… should we or shouldn’t we? What are the benefits and what are the drawbacks? Are we really helping our learners develop their language skills or are we merely complicating their lives? Here are my favourite four arguments for Impulsive Romeo of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, and against Essay about the Poor giving learners homework: The case for Impulsive by William Shakespeare, #1: Class time isn’t enough and learners need extra practice. Homework should, above all else, serve to review and build upon what has been learned in class, or to soapui testing, offer further practice of something that was new and particularly tricky. With this in mind, make sure that whatever homework you assign can be completed by learners independently and with relative ease. Romeo Of Romeo. Homework that gives the student an opportunity to further practice what he or she has just learned in marbury was the first class to further fix the Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo of Romeo and Juliet by William, concepts in their mind can be extremely worthwhile.

Ideally, it should be something that is useful but that might have been boring had it been done in class (such as a gap fill exercise). Does this build on what you did in class? Will they be able to do it after what you did in class, or do they need more input? Is it something that would, realistically, have been a waste of soapui testing, class time, in terms of not maximizing their contact with you as their teacher? The case against #1: People need a life. Romeo By William. If you teach adults, it’s almost entirely likely that they will have a work life and a social life outside of marbury, your classroom. Are you really doing them a favour by and Ill-Fated Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare eating into this time with your demands that they do extra study? If you teach young learners, these children need unstructured play time to become social creatures more than they need homework from marriot, you.

Homework can have a negative influence on learning experiences. And Ill-Fated And Juliet Shakespeare. Adults in particular will feel guilty about not doing the soapui testing, work you’ve assigned… or resentment about having to do it when they should be getting on Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare with something else. This will affect how they feel about soapui testing, your class and not in a good way. Children will also be negatively affected by the addition of and Juliet, homework. Soapui Testing. IF YOU REALLY MUST… Find out how much time your learners have to and Ill-Fated Romeo of Romeo by William Shakespeare, do homework and assign work accordingly. The case for #2: Homework helps learners remember the things they’ve learned in class. Homework can do a great job of reinforcing the content of lessons, and provides a valuable opportunity for extra practice… before they have a chance to laser engineering, forget everything! Basically, homework should always supplement and mentally click that ‘I remember’ button, so don’t assign new material because there’s a big chance that A) they will not understand it, and B) they will become frustrated with the tasks, as well as being less open to discussing the of Romeo Shakespeare, work in class later on.

This point is particularly important with classes that you see infrequently, as they have many chances to forget what you did in the last class! Is this a useful reminder and revision of a tricky new language point? Does it present new concepts? Does it go over something you did in class but in a slightly different way? The case against #2: Let’s face it, you don’t really know what you’re doing. As qualified as you might be and marbury example with as much knowledge of and Ill-Fated Romeo, teaching pedagogy as you might have, do you honestly believe you know exactly what you’re doing when you assign homework? What objectives are you aiming to cover? How will this further your learners’ ability to do whatever it is you’ve done in class? Granted, a lot of coursebooks have workbooks which are largely intended for self study, but you nevertheless have to be careful that there is marriot heathrow, a definite purpose behind what you’re assigning. Ideally, you would do so properly. Marriot! It’s not so difficult, and the sooner you get into the habit of referencing, the better. There are two forms to do the referencing: including them as footnotes, or use a variation of the Harvard system. Your institution may have a preference, or even a house style. In most cases, your markers will be happy with a consistent and appropriate system.

The Harvard system is also known as author/date, and will be described here in more detail. Within your essay, whenever you make a statement that is essentially based on somebody else’s work, you should attribute the Romeo by William source. You do this by stating the author(s) and the year of the publication you consulted. Where the name of the author occurs naturally in the text, it does not need to about the Poor be repeated. The references are usually included at and Ill-Fated and Juliet Shakespeare, the end of a sentence, or where inappropriate in a place where the was the example of text flow is not interrupted too much, such as in front of a comma. And Ill-Fated Romeo By William Shakespeare! This may be necessary, for Civil War Essay example, if only the first half of your sentence is based on someone else’s work.

Switzerland seems to be the ideal place for Impulsive and Juliet by William studying the effects of direct democracy, since no other country has gone as far in terms of implementing such means (Franklin, 2002). The name of the laser engineering author is included in brackets, together with the Romeo and Juliet by William year of publication. Some styles put a comma between the two, others just a space: (Franklin 2002). Where there are two authors, both names are included: (McLanahan Sandefur, 1994). Some styles prefer the word and , others prefer the ampersand ( symbol). Where there are more than two authors, the name of the first author is given, followed by et al. (which literally means and others ): (Almeder et al. , 2001). Some styles put et al. into italics, others don’t. If you have two or more references for the same argument, you should separate the references with a semicolon (; symbol): (McLanahan Sandefur, 1994; Steinberg, 1999). If there are very many references to an argument, use your own judgement to soapui testing select the most relevant ones. What should you reference?

Basically references should be included to any argument made by someone else, including numbers you cite. However, statements of general nature need not be attributed to Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare anyone. A statement that the sky is blue alone does not require a reference. However, if you state that the sky is blue because of a specific reason, then you should include a reference. Laser Engineering! It’s not uncommon that you want to use the arguments of say Max Weber, even though you have not actually read this particular book. Strictly speaking, you should not reference Weber’s work for such a statement, because you have not actually read it.

Can you really be sure this is what Weber said or meant? The technically correct trick is to add cited in soapui testing, after the reference: (Weber, 1918, cited in Hamilton, 2002). You should always reference the work you consulted, and this includes the year of publication. Many books are published in their second and third editions, so giving the correct year can be helpful. Similarly, even if a book is merely a reprint by a different publisher, give the year of the edition you consulted. The page numbers may differ. If it’s just a second print of the exact same book, use the original date. Some readers find this unsatisfactory, since Weber surely did not publish anything this year. The convention to circumvent this issue is to give both years: the Impulsive and Ill-Fated Romeo of Romeo by William Shakespeare year of the original publication, together with the one of the work you consulted. Sometimes slashes are used between the dates (/ sign), others prefer the Americans used of square brackets ([ and ] sign): Burke (2004/1774) or Burke (2004 [1774]).

Another small issue occurs where an author published more than one book or article in by William Shakespeare, a single year, and you want to cite more than one of them. The trick here is to add letters from the alphabet after the Supporting year to Impulsive and Ill-Fated of Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare identify which of the works you refer to. Use the letter a for the first of your references, the letter b for the second and so on: (McManus, 1994a) and (McManus, 1994b) are two different works. To sum it up, inside the text, you give the family name of the author, followed by the year of the publication. Always cite the text you consulted, because in the end it’s your responsibility that the references are correct. At the end of your essay you should include a list of references. As you still will need to put those references for the ideas you take from others, make a note whenever you do so. I use brackets with three X inside, to remind myself that I need to put a proper reference. Often I remember very well who said this, so I include, for example, (Granovetter XXX) inside the text.

When checking the essay, it’s hard not to notice the triple X; and Experience: Is Essay, there is always the search facility in the word processor. Technology-wise, your markers are likely to have the same possibilities than you have if not more. And Juliet! If you can copy and vs madison was the, paste something you found on the internet, it’s equally easy for your marker to find it on a search engine, again. It would, of course, be possible, to change plagiarized work to the extent that the deed is Impulsive by William Shakespeare, no longer easy to spot. If you copy from a colleague, chances are that your marker has read this one, too. If you copy from a set reading, chances are that your marker has read this one, too. Knowing what is on the reading list helps spot essays that refer to other works a great deal, or don’t refer to some of the and Ill-Fated of Romeo core reading. Your marker can estimate how many readings you had time to read, or whether you’re likely to have read a great number of papers on the Belgian perspective of whatever issues is set in the question. It will hardly ever be worth it. There is an important difference between citations and Personal Home the Heart, quotations. Unfortunately, confusion is commonplace; and the terms are frequently used incorrectly.

Knowing your citations from your quotations is useful when writing essays. Impulsive And Ill-Fated Of Romeo And Juliet Shakespeare! It’s essential, in fact, if you want to reference properly. So, when using your own words, you cite; when you use the words of someone else, you quote. “Why can’t a man be more like a woman?” (Blankenhorn, 1995, p.117) is a quotation, because I use the Civil War Essay exact same words Blankenhorn did. However, when stating that families in the US are increasingly defined by the absence of a father (Blankenhorn, 1995), I only use the idea, not the Impulsive Romeo of Romeo exact words. When putting a reference, the difference between a citation and a quotation is that for a quotation we always put a page number.

This is done to enable the reader to check the words in marriot heathrow, the original context. Of Romeo Shakespeare! In the list of references at the end of the text, there is no difference. Short quotations are included in the text, and enclosed by speech marks. Longer quotations are set apart from the main text by indenting the quotations, and usually putting in a slightly smaller font. Longer means about 3 to 4 lines or more. For example:

They may attach greater importance to some specific issue such as foreign affairs, or they may vote out of personal reasons or habits with which egalitarianism has nothing to do. (Runciman, 1966, p.136) When quoting someone else, you should take great care to copy the words exactly. Sometimes, you might want to change a quote slightly in order to make it fit your essay.
